August 2018 Rev. Rob Purdy Pastor Church Newsletter August Calendar Joanne Wells Editor Cheryl Harrison Online Editor Let All Things Praise the Lord Psalm 150 Praise the Lord! 1 Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him in His mighty firmament! 2 Praise Him for His mighty acts; Praise Him according to His excellent greatness! 3 Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; Praise Him with the lute and harp! 4 Praise Him with the timbrel and dance; Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes! 5 Praise Him with loud cymbals; Praise Him with clashing cymbals! 6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord! August is a great month to remind ourselves to praise the Lord. We ve navigated the business of June and July and have a few weeks to catch our breath before the business of September arrives! We have much to praise Him for. He s done so much for us individually and as a church. He s created us, saved us, forgiven us, redeemed us, loved us, planted us, guided us, protected us, provided for us, chose us, healed us, blessed us, accepted us, reconciled us, adopted us, justified us, sanctified us, delivered us, and has seated us! Oh, there s so much more! Amen? It s easy to get focused on the going and the doing and forget to simply praise Him! I know I need to be reminded from time to time. How about you? We ve enjoyed a successful summer with VBS, Mission Trips, Super Summers, Youth Lock-ins, Tomato Challenges and Everybody Bible Studies. We ve truly been blessed. We ve had baptisms, salvations and new members. And we ve had babies!!! And watermelons! September marks the month when we return to our normal schedule. Men s Monday Night Ministry get s going again, as does the Sunday Women s Ministry Bible Study. Dlife groups that have taken the summer off will start again. August 2018 Lamplight Something Important If you are familiar with social media formats (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) you probably have seen a plethora of funny memes. What is a meme you ask? According to the online dictionary, a meme is a humorous image, video, or piece of text that is copied (often with slight variations) that spreads rapidly by Internet users. In other words, a meme is a funny picture or video that goes viral on the internet, usually with a funny or thought-provoking caption. For example, see the chihuahua meme to the right... funny, huh? Good memes always trigger a response - usually a giggle or sometimes a grimace, but the best ones provoke thoughtful discussion. I saw one of these memes recently. It was a picture of a small girl in a car seat. The caption above her picture read: ABC NEWS SUGGESTED THAT PARENTS PUT SOMETHING IMPORTANT IN THE BACK SEAT TO AVOID ACCIDENTALLY LEAVING KIDS IN A HOT CAR. Oh my! This meme caused a lot of discussion, especially the discussion about what is important. News reports indicate that the unimaginable happens more often than we realize. Parents or Grandparents accidentally forget that there is a child in the back seat. What can be done? Some cars have installed alarms that alert the driver to check the back seat. This is a great idea, but not all cars have these alarms. Put something important in the back seat... Is this really the answer? Somebody suggested that placing a purse or a shoe in the back seat might help. This is all well and good but wait a minute! How is it that a personal item such as a purse or shoe serves as the best reminder that there is a child in the back seat? Isn t it obvious that the something important is actually the child? Wow! A meme worth a thousand words. The discussion about important things has spanned the ages. We even find it in the Bible. In Mark 12:28-34 one of the teachers of the law asked Jesus, Of all the commandments, which is the most important? (vs. 28) Jesus boldly answered the question... The most important one is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. (vs. 29-31) The passage is familiar to many of us as the Great Commandment. At first, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:4-5; however, He intensifies it a bit by adding a few words. The Deuteronomy verses say, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might, and as you can see, Jesus added the words, all your mind. But wait... stay with me! We don t want to miss something important! Jesus begins his answer with, The most important one is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one, and He wraps up the discussion with, There is no commandment greater than these. Wow! There is some important stuff to glean from this... First, There is ONE God. Second, We must love God with our entire being, and we must love others with godly love. Third, No other command is more important than these. I guess the next question would be... is His command important enough to obey? Somebody should make a meme! Remember this... you are loved, and you are always in my prayers. In Christ, Cheryl Page 6
