Page1 6 We Believe in Salvation by Grace Salvation is God's way of making us real people. Augustine Introduction: 1 God has tremendous love for all of his creatures and does not want any of them to perish. He does not wish that any of them would be separated from him. So we see according to Ezekiel; As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live (Ezekiel 33:11 ESV) Because God loves his creatures so much he enacted a plan for the purpose of rescuing those he loves. This plan is fulfilled through Jesus who described his purpose: For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. (Luke 19:10 ESV) But what is God s plan? Who is included? How can we be included? What are the benefits for those who receive God s salvation? Grace From the moment man disobeyed God and acted against God s specific will he was answerable under penalty of death. God had told Adam that if he disobeyed he would die. Yet, Adam chose to act contrary to God's 1 Salvation has been provided through Jesus Christ for all men; and those who repent and believe in Him are born again of the Holy Spirit, receive the gift of eternal life, and become the children of God. (See C&MA Statement of Faith).

Page2 instructions. But he did not physically die immediately. In fact though mankind was expelled from the Garden of Eden, Adam continued to live in this world and God continued to care for him and his descendants to this day. Now even those who do not honor God or seek to follow him enjoy the benefits of living in this world. This is common grace. As the Bible says, "For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." "(Matthew 5:45) God knew from the beginning that there would be a provision for man s sin. He sends good upon the just and the unjust for the purpose of helping those who do not trust him to come to him as they experience his kindness. Common grace is known by the fact that we are all able to breathe the air and receive the other substances that give our bodies life. There is also saving grace. Saving grace is provided through Jesus Christ. Not all experience saving grace. The Bible says, But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12 ESV) And Jesus said, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 ESV) We must believe what God has told us about his Son Jesus and we must receive him as our Savior. Election It seems that whenever we discuss salvation, the question of election is raised. Election relates to the fact that God is all knowing and outside of time and space. He knows the end at the beginning. It would be impossible for an all knowing God not to know who will accept his son and who will not. Somehow God in his foreknowledge still gives each person an opportunity to choose to follow him or not. His provision for each person is always 100% just and perfect. God gives opportunity without manipulating

Page3 the outcome. Again, true justice is at stake. But the important thing to remember is that the justice we each deserve is death which is eternal separation from God. It is by grace alone that he chooses to save some, when we all justly deserve destruction. C.S. Lewis said, There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done' and those to whom God says, in the end, 'THY will be done.' All that are in Hell choose it. Without that self-choice, there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek, find. To those who knock, it is opened." 2 From our perspective, the best way for us to view election from a practical standpoint is to assume everyone has a choice. Thus we do well to pray for pre-believers and share the Gospel with them knowing that (as seen in Ezekiel above) it is not God s will that any would perish. God s plan of Salvation I had worked hard during the summer. I had devoted many hours at a seatbelt factory not far from our home. Not only that, but I had worked every day the factory was open during Christmas break. Yet, I did not have enough funds to cover my full bill for the spring semester at the University that year. I was short a substantial sum. The bill was due and I could not pay it in full. My dad had become aware of the situation. It was the morning of the first day of classes. As I started for the door to head for class, there he stood with cash in hand. Enough to pay what I could not. There were not words adequate to express my gratitude. He did not have to offer those funds. But he offered them freely, never expecting or wanting repayment. God s salvation is a bit like that. We stand before the Bursar of eternity. We have given all that we 2 C.S. Lewis, The Great Divorce, Chap. 9, pp 72-73

Page4 could possibly have earned. Our very sweat and blood was in the inadequate payment. It was everything we had opportunity to earn and save. But we have come up short. And we are not deficient by just a dollar or two. We are talking thousands. In fact, he doesn t even take the kind of currency we offer. The amount is irrelevant because it is so far beyond what we have the means to pay. We cannot earn it. Yet, our loving heavenly Bursar Father gives a nod, and suddenly we notice a nail-pierced hand stretch across the desk from behind us. When our heavenly Bursar sees that wounded hand, he stamps our bill, Paid in Full. We are speechless. But then we begin to feel the gratitude well up inside as we realize exactly what has been done on our behalf the precious price that has been paid despite our own unworthiness. God is gracious God s word says, But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:4-5a, 7 ESV) As we can see from these verses, it is God s goodness and lovingkindness appearing in the Savior that is our hope. If our works could somehow make us acceptable to God, we would not need his grace. But because we have done things that offend God and our good acts cannot compensate for the wrong we have done, his grace is required. As Isaiah says, our works and selfrighteous efforts come up short: We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. (Isaiah 64:6 ESV) Paul also said: None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become

Page5 worthless; no one does good, not even one. (Romans 3:10-12 ESV) A little further on in this chapter we read: For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Romans 3:23 ESV) It is important to notice the word all in these passages. There is no one who is exempt from this verdict. This situation involves every person that has ever existed or will exist. This means that God s grace is at work in everyone s life who is currently breathing. For according to Romans 6:23, the wages of sin is death. Death is spiritual separation from God, including physical death. All of humanity is currently worthy of permanent spiritual and physical death. It is only by his grace that he allows us all to live and have an opportunity to receive the Savior Jesus. The Bible says, he sends good things to both the just and the unjust. Again, this is his mercy at work constantly. We may be tempted to believe that God is slow to fulfill his promises. This may lead us to doubt his justice and grace. But the opposite is true. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (2 Peter 3:9 ESV) God is revealing his grace to mankind by his patience. Dr. Grudem points out that there is no mention that angels will be redeemed. God has not sent a Savior on their behalf. Those angels who rebelled against God are destined for destruction; they have no opportunity for salvation. God was not required to redeem mankind. It would have been gracious if he had redeemed even only a few humans. But he reveals his gracious nature by making salvation available to all. The Recipients of Salvation

Page6 The next question is, Who is eligible for salvation? Many of us, because of the nature of this harsh, selfish world may assume that this opportunity is not available to them. Like every other great thing that comes along, somehow it does not include them. Yet, we are told more than once in God's word that: "God our Savior desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth." (1 Timothy 2:4b ESV) God s word is clear regarding the means by which we can receive God s gift. We must Repent 3 In the Old Testament, the prophets would tell Israel, and in some cases Gentiles, to turn. The Hebrew word is shuv. 4 The prophets wanted to give the people a shuv in the right direction. Our fallen spiritual condition results in our tendency to put God off. We procrastinate our dealing with God. We run away from God. We avoid God. Therefore, the first thing we need to do is stop moving away from God and turn around toward him. John the Baptist began his ministry like the O.T. prophets, with a call to repent (Matt 3:2). Jesus also called the people to repent in Matt 4:17. He later told the disciples to preach repentance and remission of sins (Luke 24:47). Peter also preached repentance in Acts 2:38. To repent involves a godly sorrow over our sin, and it also involves action. For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you. (2 Corinthians 7:10-11a ESV) One Bible passage that exemplifies repentance would be the story of Zacchaeus found in Luke 19. After Jesus 3 are born again of the Holy Spirit, receive the gift of eternal life, and become the children of God. 4 Pronounced shoov.

Page7 visited with him Zacchaeus is so grateful that he decides to turn from his former ways. Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold. And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house Sorrow and earnestness lead to change in direction. The prodigal son decided to go to his father and then he went. Luke 15:18-20. He not only had to make the decision to return to his father, but he had to act on that decision. It is not enough to know we have sinned, but we have to decide and begin to take steps back toward God. There needs to be evidence by our actions that we mean what we say. Faith It may seem hard to know whether we should put faith before or after repentance to reflect accurately the order in which these take place in a person s life. They are both necessary for movement toward God. As indicated above, the call to repentance took place and then people responded. But without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. (Hebrews 11:6 ESV). The idea of faith is relying upon. In order for someone to come to faith there must be an intellectual ascent to facts or truth that is presented. This is the object of faith. But it must go beyond intellectual ascent because in James we read, You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe and shudder! (James 2:19 ESV) Yet the demons will not receive salvation. So there is more than intellectual ascent or mental awareness. It means making a complete commitment to and placing complete trust in Jesus. This involves intellect, will, and emotions. True faith results in a changed life.

Page8 Regeneration When we speak of regeneration we mean "that work of God that provides new life and a new nature to the faithful. 5 "Regeneration is brought about by the Holy Spirit to transform us so that we experience new birth, it is also known as being born from above." 6 Regeneration is the spark and power of new life that begins the transformation process. We are regenerated (brought to new life) by being partakers of the divine nature. "His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire." 2 Peter 1:3-4 Also Paul says, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind." Yet, the central truth of the Gospel message is that changed life is not accomplished by us, it is accomplished by God. By God s mercy we are given vision to see the truth about ourselves and God. We either respond to God s mercy and experience regeneration, or we reject his mercy and move toward hardness of heart. Titus records that he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit. (Titus 3:5 ESV) Sin prevents us from being able to comprehend our 5 Bernie Van De Walle, Dictionary of Christian Spirituality, Scorgie, Glen G., Zondervan, Grand Rapids, MI 2010. p.712 6 Keith Beasley-Topliffe, ed., Dictionary of Christian Spiritual Formation, Upper Room Books, Nashville, TN, 2003. p. 235

Page9 situation. We experience the symptoms of our illness, but because everyone around us has the same illness, we assume that we are fine. Our sickness blinds us to the truth. So, the Holy Spirit must move in and as we respond to the Spirit he continues to draw us to the point of trusting Jesus. We are brought back to life (Ephesians 2:4-5). As we are regenerated we are partakers of the divine nature through Christ by the Holy Spirit. For he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. (2 Peter 1:4 ESV) Justification Justification is the judicial part of our salvation. God removes our sin. In Christ he declares us not guilty. The Law tells us what we have done wrong. As Paul explains; through the law comes knowledge of sin. (Romans 3:20b ESV). All are in need of the justification that is only available through Jesus because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. (Romans 3:23-24 ESV) Jesus took our place. He was our substitute. He took on himself the punishment we deserved. He gave to us the righteousness that was his. In this way justice was served: we are justified by the price he paid on our behalf. We simply must believe; put our faith in what Jesus has done for us. Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (Romans 5:1-2 ESV) We do not earn it. We could not afford to pay for it. Our personal bank account of righteousness was simply not

Page10 enough. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV) Transformation Transformation is the outflow and evidence of new life (regeneration) by the Holy Spirit. Transformation is the result of regeneration. It is the evidence of God s work in the life of one who has placed their faith in Jesus; it is seen in the change of character called fruit of the Spirit in Galatians: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, selfcontrol; against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV) James also mentions that without this change there is question as to the genuineness of one s faith. What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? (James 2:14 ESV) Notice the word that modifying the word faith. James is not questioning all faith, but rather the sort of faith that gives no evidence of the change of character that is expected with the presence of God s Spirit. Paul reported in Ephesians that good works should flow out of the believer s life: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10 ESV). Jesus also told a parable (Matthew 13:3-8; 18-23; parallel Luke 8:4-21, 11-15) indicating that true belief manifests fruit. Thus he is delivering us from the power of sin in our lives now. In this way we have the benefit of no longer needing to be in bondage to the power of the flesh. The Benefits are Out of this World 7 7 receive the gift of eternal life, and become the children of God.

Page11 As we receive him he gives the right to become children of God. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:12-13) Thus we have an immediate benefit that we begin to experience in this world. God begins to work in our lives so that we become more like Jesus day by day. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:6 ESV) We no longer must live life on our own. We can look forward to escaping the presence of sin. Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. (1 John 3:2-3 ESV) Conclusion God loves us beyond what we can imagine. Because this is true, he has provided a way to return to him. Our hope is found in the path provided by God's only son, Jesus. As we place our trust in Jesus the Messiah, we experience God's gracious love. God has made the gift of eternal life available to all who will admit their failure to measure up to God's standard, turn from their rebellion and return to God. When we make such a choice, we are justified because of Jesus work on the cross and enter a relationship with God. He then begins a lifelong process of transforming us into people who are like Jesus in our attitude and our actions. Further, we look forward to an everlasting relationship with him. These materials were created and compiled by Rev. Bruce A. Overstreet, D.Min., for training in the C&MA Statement of Faith.
