NOTE FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Recently Kate Madore wrote to a priest. ( A Letter to a Priest: It s an Omission That I Never Told You, Aleiteia.org, 10 September 2018.) She wanted to let him know that he had changed her life. She said: Five years back, you were in our town, filling in at the local college chapel for our regular pastor. I was the musician for Saturday night Mass. For the two or six or 12 Catholics in a small private school... That particular night, what little twilight we had vanished as I approached the stone chapel. I remember staring at the stars with a viciousness that startled me. NOTHING. There was nothing, no-one, there. As for me? Nothing more than an impressive cluster of talking cells. And if-if-if God was real He could not possibly love me in the way He claimed to. The physical reality of the billions of people on earth, the billions before and yet to come, bumped against my doubt with deadening certainty. It was acutely impossible for One being to intimately love so many. What a fool I d been. My thoughts were bitter and brief. How can love that great be given to more than one? Then, she entered the chapel and began to play the music for the Mass. She was so distracted by this attack of atheism that she failed to get in line to receive Holy Communion. She kept playing and singing without paying attention to the flow of the Mass. She wrote: I d lost track of Father he was not at the head of the line, nor cleansing the vessels, nor back in his chair. Shoot. I d messed up. I looked to the left. And there you were, Father N, humbly and quietly waiting I don t even know how long for me to finish the song. With that strange, defenseless, impossible Body of love in your hand. Seeking me out, me alone. The congregation had received, and you, and He, waiting just for me. Finding me in my storm. Then, the priest inclined his head to ask her if she would like to receive. Not forcing, not requiring me to fix the tattered holes in my faith and my threadbare heart. Asking, inviting, this girl at 6:30 PM, on a cold black night; a sinner, intimately, deeply desired by Christ. Courted by Him even as she sat in doubt at His banquet table. In the midst of the scandals in the Church, this priestly gesture often comes to Kate s mind: I have thought of this day through all the years and never told you. Never told you how that moment changed me. So for whatever it may be worth: Father, I see you. With no expectation for you to be perfect or to fit any one person s version of priest. I see what you gave, what you give, as a (sometimes tired, grieved) man. And I tell you that you helped transform my life. In the current warped devastation, you must know that through your humility and faith, you made a little room a little table in which Christ and I could sit and speak. It is a valuable thing in the midst of the negative attention on the Church to consider the positive effects the people of God have had on us. God bless you! Father Eric The Flowers on the Altar are donated in loving memory of Thomas Haeger on the 10th anniversary of his death by his family.

Sacred Heart 2017-2018: If you and your spouse are considering a Private/Catholic school for your children, Sacred Heart is the perfect choice. Sacred Heart School is a West Brighton fixture with a rich history of academic and athletic success. The school currently has an enrollment of 278 students all of whom are inspired and educated in the image of God. One hundred percent of our 8th grade graduates are accepted into their high school of choice. Many of our students are awarded high school scholarships, are accepted into advanced/ specialized programs and our school has among the highest ELA and Math scores on Staten Island. We place emphasis on technology in the classrooms as our kindergarten eighth grade students have Chromebooks in the classroom. Homework assignments, upcoming events and school news are posted on our school website. Also our basketball, soccer, swimming and golf teams are not only competitive, they win! Sacred Heart also has a Junior National Honor Society as well as drama, art and chess clubs. In addition, we offer a free Pre-K and financial assistance is available to students from K-8th grade. If you are interested please contact the school at (718) 442-0347, private tours are available by appointment. Crossroads Foundation Fashion Show: The Crossroads Foundation will be having its 25th annual fashion show on Thursday October 4th at 7PM at The Hilton Garden Inn. Tickets are $65 per person and please call 718-556-3474 for more information or to reserve seats. In fact, we are now (as of this writing) at $1,060,885 which represents 115% of our overall goal. We thank each and every parishioner who has given/pledged to our campaign and we encourage those who haven t to give what their means will allow. Remember if our campaign reaches 120% then every dollar donated stays with the parish. CCD Registration: CCD Registration for 2018-2019 is going on now, re registrants are to send in forms as soon as possible. New registrations come to the rectory and pick up/drop off forms. Grades 1-5 meet from 3:30-5 PM and grades 6-8 meet from 5:30-7 PM. Confirmation Meeting: Monday Sept 17th, 7 PM, school auditorium. Communion Meeting: Monday, Sept 24th, 7 PM, auditorium. St. Joseph s Seminary Collection : The annual collection for St. Joseph s Seminary, Dunwoodie, will take place on the weekend of September 29th and 30th. As the seminary enters its 122nd year the young men studying there represent the next generation of priests. In modernizing the campus, the roof and bell towers have been replaced, the fire and sprinkler systems have been replaced, air conditioning has been added to meeting rooms and the beautiful chapel has been renovated. St. Joseph s Seminary has a wonderful tradition of forming and ordaining holy, faithful and dedicated priests. As many of you as parents are aware of the financial challenges of sending your children to college. These same costs exist to the seminarians who study at St. Joseph s, however, they don t have the option of loans, financial aid or government scholarships. It then becomes the duty of fellow Catholics in the archdiocese to support these men as they continue on their journey to the priesthood. The priests of the archdiocese form and inform, nourish and strengthen us, and guide us throughout our life as Catholics. We ask that you be as generous as your means will allow and remember that every donation is appreciated.
