LISTEN! LEARN! THINK! PRAY! THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND THE RACIAL DIVIDE IN THE UNITED STATES BY BISHOP EDWARD K. BRAXTON WESTERFIELD CENTER THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2018 AT 7:00 PM While the Bishop s formal education and writings in systematic theology have led to teaching positions at Harvard Divinity School, the University of Notre Dame, the Catholic University of America, and the Pontifical North American College in Rome, in recent years he has turned his scholarship to the question of racial divide. In 2015, he issued his Pastoral Letter, The Racial Divide in the United States: A Reflection for the World Day of Peace 2015. In 2016, he published the companion Pastoral Letter, The Catholic Church and the Black Lives Matter Movement: The Racial Divide Revisited. These were followed by Moral Leadership in Action: All Lives Really Do Matter and There are no Minority Voters. Since their publication, Bishop Braxton has lectured nationally, becoming a leading voice in the Catholic Church on improving race relations. The Bishop s writings and addresses are intended to invite individuals and groups to enter into conversations about important and sensitive subjects without judging racial divide. On September 21, 2017, he delivered the university address at The Catholic University of America on The Horizon of Possibilities: The Catholic Church and the Racial Divide in the United States, Old Wounds Reopened. On February 1, 2018, he delivered the African American History Month Address at the Sheil Catholic Center of Northwestern University. On February 21, 2018, he delivered the 12th Annual Thomas Merton Address on Thomas Merton s Letter to a White Liberal and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. s Letter from a Birmingham Jail at Bellarmine University in Louisville Kentucky. The Bishop s address (see information below) will examine key elements contributing to the racial divide in the United States and the emergence of the Black Lives Matter Movement from the perspective of the Catholic Church. He will explore the reasons why only a small number of African-Americans are Catholic (2.9 million out of nearly 70 million), the all lives matter vs. Black lives matter debate, and the negative impact of the erroneous expressions minorities and minority groups. He will conclude by exploring the question of what can the Catholic Church do to help bridge the racial divide. BISHOP BRAXTON WILL SPEAK AT THE WESTERFIELD CENTER, DIOCESE OF BATON ROUGE ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2018 AT 7:00 PM. ALL ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND! BATON ROUGE, LA 3

Called to Action REFLECTION ON ST. PADRE PIO BY FR. STEVE St. Padre Pio, a Franciscan Capuchin friar and one of the greatest saints of all time, was blessed by God in many wonderful and mysterious ways; the most dramatic being the stigmata. Among his other gifts were Bilocation, prophecy, reading of souls, Levitation, apparition, conversion, odor of sanctity and miraculous cures. People are still being cured through his intercession in ways that cannot be explained by medicine or science. St. Pio is a great miracle-worker and a powerful intercessor whose feast we celebrate on September 23. Padre Pio was born May 25, 1887 in Pietrelcina, a small town in southern Italy, and he died on September 23, 1968. Though he suffered through intense, prolonged physical pain, he persevered and met with throngs of people who sought his blessing, healing, and advice. The core of his message to all, a message many associated with miraculous healing, was the simple command of liberation: Pray, Hope, and Don t Worry. Once you make known your needs, fears, hopes, concerns, doubts and struggles to God in prayer, and have asked for His help, explains the Capuchin priest, you have to now trust the Lord to listen because of his great compassion. Padre Pio s motto, Pray, Hope and Don t Worry is the synopsis of his application of theology in daily life. A Christian should recognize God in everything, offering everything to Him saying, Thy will be done. In addition, all should aspire to heaven and put their trust in Him and not worry about what he is doing, as long as it is done with a desire to please God. When he spoke of the Mass, St. Pio said: It is easier for the earth to exist without the sun than without the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass! Look at all the people from all over the world he gathered around him! Why? said Pope Paul VI in 1971. Because he said Mass humbly, heard confessions from dawn to dusk and was - it is not easy to say it - one who bore the wounds of Our Lord. He was a man of prayer and suffering. St. Pio was known for sitting in the confessional for up to 15 to 17 hours a day; the tireless confessor is said to have heard millions of confessions, giving hope to the desperate and distressed penitents. Despite his suffering, he was unfailingly compassionate and jovial. This charming saint gave spiritual and physical assistance to families who came to him for advice. He had that concern, knowing the family is the first school and the first church because that s where the children learn to pray, learn about God, and learn the things they need for the rest of their lives. He was kind and loving toward children and always gave them special blessings. One of the pilgrims that came to meet the mysterious monk, and who had great admiration, esteem and veneration, and who confessed with him, was St. John Paul II who said: I wish to thank the Lord for having given us dear Padre Pio, for having given him to our generation in this very tormented century. In his love for God and for his brothers and sisters, he is a sign of great hope. On June 16, 2002, Pope John Paul II declared his spiritual friend, Padre Pio a saint. The Rosary was part and parcel of Padre Pio s love for the Mother of Jesus, stating that The Rosary is the weapon against Satan for these times, a weapon of defense and salvation. Many know Mary only with their minds. Padre Pio knew her with his heart. Above Padre Pio s door were the words: Mary is the reason of all my hope. The Rosary has been the seat belt that we need in these times of turbulence in our troubled society. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Padre Pio s death and centennial since receiving the stigmata. God gave us Padre Pio to remind a skeptical world that God Exists and that the intrigues and scandals are trivial compared to the great goal of heaven. In everything, St. Pio counseled people by word and example to pray, hope and don t worry. It was his prescription for eternal health which gave comfort and healing to millions. Could there be a more fitting message for our time of stress and uncertainty - or a more effective means to spiritual growth? Life is stressful, but Padre Pio had the way to deal with all of life s troubles; and so it is wise and still relevant today to follow the admonition - pray, hope and don t worry. Happy feast!
