Getting started THE WELCOME To spark anticipation, encourage arriving children to meet and greet one another with today s question. Meet & Greet Question: What is your favorite thing to wear? GAME: SUPER SILLY CLOTHES RELAY Purpose: Children will play a relay race using clothes as they begin to learn the story of Jesus healing the woman who touched His clothes. Supplies: Assortment of clothing (hats, shirts, pants, socks, shoes, vests, or coats), floor tape or chalk Prepare: Pile the clothes in the center of the play area. Mark a start line with floor tape for each team an equal distance from the pile of clothes. In today s story about Jesus healing power, we will discover another way Jesus showed just how powerful He really is. He is so powerful, a woman was healed just by touching the clothes He was wearing! Before we read the story, let s play a game with lots and lots of clothes! Directions: 1. Form teams of 4 to 6 players. 2. Teams line up behind their start lines. 3. On your signal, the first player on each team runs to the clothes pile, retrieves an item, and races back to tag the next person in line. The next player repeats the process. 4. When the pile is empty, each team chooses one player to be the model. The team helps the model put on all the clothes they have collected (over the model s own clothes). After the model is dressed, he or she returns to the spot where the pile of clothes was to show the team has completed the task. 5. To determine the winning team, award 25 points to the 1 st team to finish, 20 points to the 2 nd team, 15 points to the 3 rd team, etc. Award 5 points to teams for each article of clothing worn by their model. Option: Limited space? Provide the same number of random clothing items to each team. Teams race to see which one can dress their model with all of the clothing items in the least amount of time. Jesus as the God of Healing THE WORSHIP Teacher Tip: To help children identify time set aside for worship, designate a special corner or area for singing, collecting offering, and watching the worship illustration. Play music as children move to the designated area. The Seven Stars of Lent If this lesson is taught during the Lenten season (the 40 days before Easter), we recommend the Seven Stars of Lent activity located at ResourceWell.org under Children Other Resources. Choose one star for each week of the Lent season. Today, we worship Jesus as the God of Healing. Many times, Jesus heals us through doctors and medicines. In today s story, He healed a woman through her simple act of faith when she reached out to touch His clothes. Jesus can heal us any way He chooses, even when doctors and medicine cannot. Let s praise Him for all He does for us, including the way He heals us. Sing Unit 2 Bible Memory Verse Song: Praise the Lord, O My Soul. You may choose to sing songs that focus on trusting Jesus. Our act of faith is to reach out to Jesus in prayer and trust that He has the power to heal us. As we give our offering today, let s thank God for healing us when we reach out to Him. Sing: Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus as the offering is collected. Read Psalm 9:10. Perform Bonzai Brothers script or read storybook: God of Wonders Unit 2, Lesson 8. Page 4 of 11

Jesus healed the sick woman THE WORD Teacher Tip: As you move from worship to instruction, change rooms or locations within a room to help redirect the children s focus to the Bible story. During this transition time, have each child write his or her name on a card and place it in the Golden Bowl. Before we read God s Word, let s go over our Class Covenant. A covenant is an agreement. Just as God made a covenant with His people, I ask each of you to make this covenant promise with me today. Listen as I read our Class Covenant: I will keep my eyes on my teacher, my mouth in control, my ears on God s Word; knowing God is my goal. Last time, we learned Jesus healed the paralyzed man on the mat. How did the four friends bring the man to Jesus? (They carried him on his mat and lowered him through the roof.) Do you remember the story about Jesus healing Jairus 12 year-old daughter? (Children respond.) Today, we will hear of a miracle that took place when Jesus was on the way to Jairus home. This happened near the Sea of Galilee. If a map of Ancient Israel is available, point to the Sea of Galilee. The news about Jesus was spreading. Everywhere He went, crowds would gather to hear His teaching and to see His miracles. When Jesus went with Jairus to his home, a large crowd followed Jesus and pressed around Him. Let s read about one woman who was in that crowd. Let s play Find It First! Bring out your Bible; keep it right in front of you. Hand out spare Bibles. Today s Scripture verse is behind the curtain (or secret door, secret window, etc.). Child reveals the Bible Story Scripture reference: Mark 5:24b-34. Let s see who can Find It First. Ready? Set? Go! Children race to find it first. The winner helps others find it. Let s highlight our Key Verse: Mark 5:28. Before we read, let s stand and ask God to open our eyes, ears, hearts, and minds to His Word today. Who would like to pray that for us? Child prays aloud. Be seated. Listen carefully as we read exactly what happened in the crowd that day. Read Mark 5:24b-34. Page 5 of 11

We can reach out to Jesus THE WAY Where was Jesus going when the woman reached out to touch His clothes? (To heal Jairus daughter.) Jesus was on the way to save a child s life, yet He took the time to wait for the woman to come to forward and talk with Him. How does this show Jesus cares about our feelings as much as He cares about the miracles? (Children respond.) How does this show there is no problem too small for Jesus? (Children respond.) How does this encourage you to reach out to Jesus even when your problem seems small compared to the problems of others? (Children respond.) When the woman realized Jesus was not going to stop looking for her, what did she do? (She fell at His feet and told Him the whole truth.) Just as He did with the woman, Jesus is looking for you to come and tell Him everything. Since He knows everything, why might Jesus want you to tell Him about your feelings and needs? (Children respond.) What did Jesus say to the woman? ( Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering. ) According to Jewish law, this woman was judged as unclean because of her illness. This meant she was an outcast. Anyone who touched her was also called unclean. What might she have been feeling over the past 12 years when people told her to stay away? (Children respond.) How might she have felt to see Jesus looking for her, listening to her, and calling her daughter? (Children respond.) Have you ever felt like an outcast or like you are not invited to be a part of a group? (Children respond.) How does it feel to know Jesus will always care about you? (Children respond.) Connecting the Old Testament, the New Testament, and Us CHRIST CONNECTION The woman reached out for Jesus in faith, trusting He could save both her health and her honor. If she was healed, she would no longer be an outcast. 1000 years earlier, King David reached out to trust God for similar things. Let s read David s advice about this. FIND IT FIRST> Everyone, place your Bible closed on your lap. Choose a child to reveal the Christ Connection Scripture reference: Psalm 62:7-8. Let s see who can Find It First! Ready? Set? Go! Find it and highlight it. Read Psalm 62:7-8. Some of you may have been waiting a long time for healing, for a problem to be solved, or for hard times to be over. It takes faith to trust that Jesus has the power to change your situation. If you are waiting, it is not because Jesus doesn t care. We can reach out to Jesus with things we ve been struggling with for a long time such as illness, bad habits, broken friendships, or hard times at home. Seat children in a circle. This cloth reminds us to reach out to Jesus. When the cloth is passed to you, complete this sentence with a need or problem you have had for a long time: I will reach out and ask Jesus to help me with problem. Encourage those who do not want to share specifics to say, I will reach out and ask Jesus to help me with my problem. Pass the cloth to the first child. Page 6 of 11

THE WAY continued Revelation 5:8 GOLDEN BOWL Teacher Tip: Write the names of classmates, local church leaders, and children in other nations or others who need prayer on small pieces of paper. Place the papers in a golden bowl. Revelation 5:8 says our prayers are like sweet smelling incense in the golden bowls at God s throne. I will lift each one of your names to God s throne as you pray for each person silently. Then, we will pray the Lord s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) aloud together. Let s pray. Lord God, we lift up to Your throne the name of each child here. We trust You to watch over us and our needs, the ones we say aloud and the ones hidden in our hearts. First, we lift up to You,,. Read names in Golden Bowl. Now, we pray the prayer Your Son taught us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. When only 5 minutes remain, begin this segment. FINAL FIVE MINUTES TREASURE TREAT: Today, your Treasure Treat is a cloth ribbon. Let it remind you that the sick woman reached out to touch Jesus clothes so she could be healed. Wear it as a bracelet or tie it on your backpack to remind you to reach out to Jesus. W 3 : Take home today s W 3 Journal Entry as your personal devotional study. Keep your journal entries together in a notebook or in your Bible. Distribute W 3 Journal Entry #8. Complete this at home and let God speak to you through His own words in the Bible! OFFERING OF ART: Until it is time to be dismissed, let s make an Offering of Art. For your offering, draw a picture of the woman touching Jesus clothes. The Offering of Art can be finished at home or given as an offering for the teacher to display. PRAYER REQUESTS: As children work on their Offering of Art, ask how you can pray for them this week. Write requests in a prayer notebook. BIBLE MEMORY VERSE SONG: Play the Unit 2 Bible Memory Verse Song, Praise the Lord, O My Soul, in the background as children wait to be dismissed. Page 7 of 11

If time remains, choose from the connected activities below. GOT TIME? SNACK: SNACK ON A CLOTH Purpose: Children will eat a snack while discussing faith. Snack Suggestion: Favorite snack, tablecloth Let s spread out this tablecloth before we enjoy our snack. What part of today s Bible story does this cloth remind you of? (The woman touched Jesus clothes.) What did Jesus say about the woman s faith? (Her faith healed her.) The woman had faith that Jesus had the power to heal her, even though many doctors and medicines could not. She trusted Jesus and reached out to Him. Directions: 1. Children gather around the tablecloth. 2. Serve the snack and drink. 3. Child prays to thank God for the snack. 4. Ask the Snack Discussion Question: What is one thing you trust Jesus to do? GAME: PATIENCE FOR POWER Purpose: For children to share ways they are waiting for God s power. Supplies: Craft clay and pipe cleaners (or paper and markers), Unit 2 Bible Memory Verse Song Praise the Lord, O My Soul, CD player The sick woman had been waiting and hoping to be healed for 12 years. Have you or your family been waiting for God to do something? Let s make something that reminds us to keep trusting Jesus as we wait for our prayer to be answered. For example, if your family needs a car, you could sculpt or draw a car or car keys. If someone at home is sad, you could make a heart. Directions: 1. Provide the clay and pipe cleaners (or paper and markers). 2. As children work, play the Bible Memory Verse Song. 3. When they are finished, ask for volunteers to share their answers by displaying and explaining their sculptures (or drawings). 4. Pray for each child s concern. Page 8 of 11

GOT TIME? continued CRAFT: CLOTH PICTURES Purpose: Children will create pictures depicting the woman touching Jesus clothes. Supplies: Sturdy paper, assorted scraps of cloth, scissors, glue, markers Prepare: Display where children can see to copy: Jesus healed the sick woman. Mark 5:24b-34 Teacher Tip: Provide easy-to-cut cloth such as felt or thin cotton muslin. Also provide several different textures and prints. Jesus power is so amazing! How was the woman healed? (She touched Jesus clothes.) Her doctors had not been able to help her for 12 years. Jesus power was so strong that the woman was healed right away when she touched His clothes. You can use cloth to tell other people this Bible story. Let s make cloth pictures of the woman touching Jesus clothes and being healed. Directions: 1. Draw Jesus on the sturdy paper. 2. Draw the woman reaching out to touch Jesus clothes. 3. Cut pieces of cloth for Jesus clothes and glue them to your drawing. 4. Cut pieces of cloth for the woman s clothes and glue them to your drawing. 5. Write: Jesus healed the sick woman. Mark 5:24b-34 on the paper. 6. Draw and color a scene around Jesus and the woman. Draw the crowd that was standing around them and/or trees and houses. 7. Take your picture home and tell someone the story of Jesus healing the sick woman. As you tell them how she touched Jesus clothes, let them touch the cloth on your picture. Page 9 of 11

GOT TIME? continued BIBLE MEMORY VERSE ACTIVITIES Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. Psalm 103:2-5 GAME: BIBLE MEMORY VERSE BRAINSTORM Purpose: Children will discuss the meaning of the Unit 2 Bible Memory Verse. Supplies: Unit 2 Bible Memory Verse poster or Bible Our new Bible Memory Verse comes from Psalm 103:2-5. Let s read each line together from the poster. After each line, raise your hand if you can tell us what it means. Praise the Lord, O my soul (Let the deepest part of you tell God how great He is!) And forget not all His benefits (Don t forget all the wonderful things God has done for you.) Who forgives all your sins (Jesus forgives all our wrong doings.) And heals all your diseases (Jesus can heal anything and anyone.) Who redeems your life from the pit (He paid for your life by dying on the cross.) And crowns you with love and compassion (His love and caring is like a treasured crown.) Who satisfies your desires with good things (He makes you happy with good things.) So that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. (Your strength is refreshed.) Teacher Tip: For an extra challenge, form eight teams. Assign a different phrase to each team. Have teams discuss the meaning of the phrase and create a poster to help them describe the meaning to the rest of the children. Teams take turns explaining their posters. GAME: HOT POTATO SCRAMBLE Purpose: In this variation of the Hot Potato game, children quickly pass their paper potatoes around the circle and then put the Unit 2 Bible Memory Verse in order once the music stops. Supplies: Sturdy brown paper, Unit 2 Bible Memory Verse Song Praise the Lord, O My Soul, CD player, Bible Memory Verse poster, timer Prepare: Divide the Unit 2 Bible Memory Verse into five or more phrases. From sturdy brown paper, cut a paper potato for each phrase. Write a different phrase on each potato. Add symbols or pictures for non-readers. Display Bible Memory Verse poster. Directions: 1. Children stand in a circle. 2. Repeat the Bible Memory Verse several times together. 3. Scramble the order of the paper potatoes ( hot potatoes ). Distribute the hot potatoes. 4. Play the Unit 2 Bible Memory Verse Song Praise the Lord, O My Soul. 5. As if the potatoes are too hot to hold, each child quickly passes the hot potatoes to the child on his or her left and receives another hot potato from the child on his or her right. 6. Continue passing the hot potatoes around the circle until the song is stopped. 7. Periodically stop the song. When the music stops, the children with a hot potato race to the center of the circle and place them in the correct order of the Bible Memory Verse. 8. Play again, as time allows. 9. Optional: Time the children and challenge them to get a faster time each round. Page 10 of 11

GOT TIME? continued BIBLE TIMELINE REVIEW God of Wonders Part One studies the miracles of Jesus, which took place during His public ministry (Circa 30-33 A.D.). This list is not chronological, as the Bible does not give a definitive order of the miracles. Review recent Bible stories to see the continuing story of who God is and what He has done. Healing the Centurion s Servant (Circa 30-33 A.D.) What did the centurion ask Jesus to do? (Heal his servant.) How did the centurion know Jesus could heal his servant without touching him? (He knew if Jesus gave the order for the servant to be healed, that it would happen just as Jesus said it would.) Healing the Paralyzed Man (Circa 30-33 A.D.) How did the four men help the man on the mat? (They brought him to Jesus by lowering him through the roof into the room where Jesus was teaching.) What two miracles did Jesus do when He saw the faith of the man s friends? (He forgave the man s sins and healed his body.) Healing the Sick Woman (Circa 30-33 A.D.) How many years had the woman been waiting for healing? (12 years.) What happened to her body when she touched Jesus clothes? (She was healed right away.) How did Jesus know someone had touched Him? (Some power had gone out from Him.) How to create a Bible Timeline for the Miracles of Jesus: 1. Print each footprint on sturdy paper. 2. Choose a wall or other visible location to display the timeline. 3. Before each lesson, add the footprint for that lesson to the Bible Timeline using the list below. Children can follow in Jesus footsteps as they review past lessons. 4. To review, ask the corresponding questions as you point to the associated footprint. The Miracles of Jesus: (Circa 30-33 A.D.)
