TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH December 16, 2014 Vol. 48 No. 50 a service of lessons and carols SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21 8:45 & 11:00 AM Sanctuary Christmas Gift of Joy ADVENT 2014 Dear Trinity Family & Friends, 700 years prior to the first Christmas, the prophet Isaiah wrote these familiar words that we read each year during this season of anticipation: A Service of Lessons and Carols is Trinity s annual service of music and scripture for the Christmas season. It is presented by the Trinity Orchestra, Sanctuary Choir, Cross & Flame Youth Choir, William A. Gardner Handbell Choir and other vocal ensembles. A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. Isaiah 11:1-3 After reading this passage over the years, I have a simple question that won t go away: What kind of plant is he talking about? Isaiah doesn t say, so we are left to imagine. Jews at that time knew exactly the type of leader that was needed to bring them political influence and protection from invading armies. I can see old men gathered at the local barbershop conjecturing over what kind of football coach or preacher or city council leader was needed. Surely they had in mind that the coming president Isaiah was describing would be tall and strong, charismatic and commanding, a rising Southern Live Oak of sorts, to extend his plant metaphor a little farther. But that is not who God sent them. Born in Bethelem and raised in Nazareth (which, incidentally comes from the Hebrew netser, meaning shoot or sprout ), this peasant child grows to become a bi-vocational carpenter/rabbi. He teaches forgiveness, kindness, and patience, and is uninterested in running for office. Rather that drafting an army, he recruits volunteers to join his cause to bring healing and hope by peace rather than the sword. (Contined on next page, A PERSONAL WORD) CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICES See inside for details and a full listing of services.

PERSONAL WORD FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2014 A SERVICE OF LESSONS & CAROLS The 8:45 AM worship service is broadcast via 15-minute delay from 9-10 AM Sundays on WAPI-1070 AM. SERMON Andrew Wolfe SERIES: What Do We Name The Baby? The Son of God MUSIC 8:45 & 11:00 AM Sanctuary Choir, Trinity Orchestra, Cross & Flame Youth Choir & Handbell Choir William A Gardner Handbell Choir, Seeds of Faith MINISTER ON CALL Bobby Scales, 746-4547 Continued... And despite persuasive attempts to squash it, his movement spreads uncontrollably. Rather than a towering Oak, he is more like a creeping vine that slowly, patiently, and deliberately stretches its tentacles across 1st century Palestine, and through his followers, around the world and across the ages. Even today through the hands and feet of Methodists who worship at 1400 Oxmoor, God s work is continuing to spread around our community and the world. One way this work is manifested is in our Christmas Gift of Joy Offering. Together this Advent, we can raise the $48,000 we need to continue God s work with partner ministries around Birmingham. Please look over the list of organizations we work with to feed the hungry, heal the sick, educate the illiterate, advocate for the marginalized and house the homeless. The rusted iron and gray concrete of urban blight in Birmingham is calling for green life to break through their decay and bring hope to all of us. Jesus says to us in John 15, I am the vine; you are the branches. Your gift ensures that the vine of God s divine redemption reaches into homes outside of Homewood. It takes patience and care to make things grow, but when we all do our part, it is inevitable that God s hope and healing will spring up where they never have before. Filled with Hope, Rev. Nathan Carden Christmas Gift of Joy supports these and other local ministries: Urban Ministry United Methodist Children s Home SIFAT (Servants in Faith & Technology) Greater Birmingham Ministries Church of the Reconciler Wesley Foundations Kairos Prison Ministry 8:45 & 11:00 AM WESLEY HALL, Rev.
