Amen. EXHORTATION If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ONFESSION and ABSOLUTION Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus hrist, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of hrist, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 1
T WORD T INTROIT Blessed be the Holy Trinity and the undivided Unity. Let us give glory to Him because He has shown His mercy to us. I have set the LORD always before me; because His is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore, my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let Your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and will be forever. Amen. Blessed be the Holy Trinity and the undivided Unity. Let us give glory to Him because He has shown His mercy to us. salm 16:8 11; antiphon: Liturgical Text KYRIE In peace, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. SERMON HYMN O God of God, O Light of Light (LSB 810) SERMON Our Incomprehensible God (John 3:1-17) astor Terry Naasz REED It is a tradition in many hristian churches to confess the Athanasian reed on Trinity Sunday. In use since the 6th century, the Athanasian reed is concerned with delineating the specific nature of each person in the Holy Trinity and, along with the Apostles and Nicene reeds, is one of the three ecumenical creeds confessed by all hristians. In the following text, the term catholic, means the whole hristian hurch as opposed to the more specific Roman atholic hurch. Whoever will be saved shall, above all else, hold the catholic faith. Which faith, except everyone keeps whole and undefiled, without doubt he will perish eternally. And the catholic faith is this: that we worship one God in three persons and three persons in one God, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the substance. For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Spirit. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit is all one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit. The Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, and the Holy Spirit uncreated. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Spirit incomprehensible. The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Spirit eternal. And yet there are not three eternals but one eternal. As there are not three uncreated nor three incomprehensibles but one uncreated and one incomprehensible. So likewise the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy Spirit almighty. And yet they are not three almighties but one almighty. So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. And yet they are not three Gods but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Spirit Lord. And yet they are not three Lords but one Lord. 5
For as we are compelled by the hristian truth to acknowledge every person by himself to be both God and Lord. So we cannot by the catholic faith say that there are three Gods or three Lords. The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone, not made nor created but begotten. The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, neither made nor created nor begotten but proceeding. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits. And in this Trinity none is before or after another; none is greater or less than another; But the whole three persons are coeternal together and coequal, so that in all things, as has been said, the Unity in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshiped. He, therefore, that will be saved is compelled thus to think of the Trinity. Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation that he also believe faithfully the incarnation of our Lord Jesus hrist. For the right faith is that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus hrist, the Son of God, is God and man; God of the substance of the Father, begotten before all worlds; and man of the substance of his mother, born in the world; erfect God and perfect man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting. Equal to the Father as touching his Godhead and inferior to the Father as touching his manhood; Who, although He is God and man, yet He is not two but one hrist: One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh but by taking the manhood into God: One altogether, not by confusion of substance but by unity of person. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man, so God and man is one hrist; Who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead. He ascended into heaven, He sits at the right hand of the Father, God Almighty, from whence He will come to judge the living and the dead. At whose coming all men will rise again with their bodies and will give an account of their own works. And they that have done good will go into life everlasting; and that that have done evil, into everlasting fire. This is the catholic faith which, except a man believe faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved. OFFERING We gather our tithes, gifts of love, and our Building Together in Faith gifts. 6
(lease stand) RAYER OF THE HURH O eternal and unchangeable God Father, Son and Holy Spirit with angels and archangels we laud and magnify Your holy name. Accept our praise this day for creating us, preserving us, redeeming us and delivering to us Your forgiveness and salvation. Glorious Lord, the Holy hristian hurch throughout the world praises You and acknowledges You to be the One True God. Renew the zeal of all congregations (especially those within our synod) in proclaiming the true eternal wisdom revealed in Your Word. Graciously bless the proclamation of pastors, teachers and all Your people, that many more will join the Holy hristian hurch in her unending praise for Your great glory. Give courage to all missionaries (especially ) as they proclaim the light of Jesus in this darkened world. Gracious God, You have gifted Your hurch with the Office of the Ministry so that we may obtain saving faith in You, and You have provided that Your hurch appoint other workers in the Kingdom to support that Gospel proclamation. We praise You this day for sending us an associate pastor in Sam Handschke. As Sam and his family prepare for their move to South Dakota, keep them in safety and bless their travels. ontinue to protect and guide Your people who travel this holiday weekend. Make their ways safe and their homecomings joyful and bring them at last to their heavenly home. God of life, on this weekend when we remember with thanksgiving those who have sacrificed their lives so that we may live in freedom, we ask your presence upon those serving in our military. According to Your will, keep them safe as they work to achieve an end to worldly conflict, sustain their families and defeat the plans of all those who would stir up violence and strife. Grant wisdom to our leaders that their decisions may result in peace and safety for all. Merciful Lord, visit those who are in any type of distress with the assurance that You abide with them even in their infirmities. We pray for those among us who are sick, homebound, undergoing tests or treatment, and for those who mourn (especially ). In the midst of their illnesses and afflictions, strengthen their faith so that they may bear any hardship in patience and trust until You grant them deliverance, peace and healing. Hear our prayers for the sake of Your adorable, true and only Son, Jesus hrist, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 7
LORD S RAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The 8:20am service continues on page 10 with the Benediction. T SERVIE OF THE SARAMENT T 11:00 am Service REFAE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, who with Your only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit are one God, one Lord. In the confession of the only true God, we worship the Trinity in person and the Unity in substance, of majesty coequal. Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANTUS 8
RAYER OF THANKSGIVING Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
