I SURRENDER ALL REV. NEIL KULP NOVEMBER 26
WHO IS THE RICH YOUNG RULER?
HIS HUMBLE APPROACH And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Mark 10:17 Runs to Jesus Kneels before Jesus Calls Jesus a godly teacher
BUT GREATER IS HE, JESUS No one richer Christ is ageless Even born a King
THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION??? What must I do to inherit eternal life? Luke 18:18
OBEY THE COMMANDMENTS??? ONLY COMMANDMENTS 5 THROUGH 10? If you want to enter life, keep the commandments. "Which ones?" he inquired. Jesus replied, " 'You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother, and 'love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 19:17c-19
OBEY THE COMMANDMENTS??? GUILTY OF BREAKING JUST ONE? For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. James 2:10
OBEY the Commandments??? Perfect like the Heavenly Father? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:48
NO PROBLEM FOR RICH YOUNG RULER All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack? Matthew 19:20
Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. Mark 10:21 ONE THING??? Sell your possessions Follow Me
SUMMATION OF ALL LAWS & COMMANDS He answered, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself. Luke 10:27
THE RICH YOUNG RULER S RESPONSE When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. Luke 18:23
HOW DIFFICULT TO MAKE SUCH A LIFE COMMITMENT? Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. Matthew 19:24
THE REAL REASON FOR REJECTING JESUS Riches, youth, and rule were his idols/gods His possessions possessed him! And Jesus knew it, Jesus knew his heart
DISCIPLES SHAKEN AND QUESTIONING When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved? Matthew 19:25
YOU CAN T, BUT GOD CAN Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. Matthew 19:26 Just like the Virgin Birth (Luke 1:37) Your sin/debt paid in full (Col. 2:13-14) A new and living way (Heb. 10:20)
THE CROSS IS THE PINNACLE OF GENEROSITY You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! Romans 5:6-9
PETER ASKS, WHAT ABOUT US? Peter answered him, "We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us? Matthew 19:27
JESUS ANSWERS Jesus said to them, "Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first. Matthew 19:28-30
JESUS ANSWERS Riches 100 x more (Rev. 21:10-21) Youth inherit eternal life (Eph. 1:13-14) Rule Sit on thrones with Christ (Eph. 2:6-7)
EXTREME CONTRASTS: BEFORE CHRIST S BIRTH Rich vs. Jesus, untold glorious riches (Isaiah 6:1) Young vs. Jesus, eternal, ageless (John 1:1-2) Ruler vs. Jesus, Creator and Sustainer (Col. 1:16)
EXTREME CONTRASTS: AFTER CHRIST S BIRTH Rich vs. Jesus, not a home to lay His head (Mt. 8:20) Young vs. Jesus, only 30 + years and crucified (John 19:28-30) Ruler vs. Jesus, emptied Himself, became a servant (Phil. 2:6-8)
CHRIST S GENEROSITY BECOMES THE CHRISTIAN S PROSPERITY For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. 2 Cor. 8:9
CHRIST S GENEROSITY BECOMES THE CHRISTIAN S PROSPERITY Riches available (Phil. 4:19) Young forever (John 3:16) Rulers with Christ (Rev. 20:4, 6)
SO WHO ARE WE NOT TO SURRENDER ALL AND, OUT OF LOVE BE GENEROUS TO CHRIST AND OTHERS? By God s grace (Phil. 1:6) For God s glory (2 Cor. 3:8) But not yet perfect, right Peter? (Luke 5:1-11; John 21:1-19)
THE GENEROSITY OF JESUS = Christ surrendered His ALL for You In your generosity will you Surrender your ALL to Him???
