A Model for Prayer (part 6)! Matthew 6:13! This morning s message brings us to the conclusion of our study through the verses traditionally known as the Lord s Prayer. This prayer that Jesus taught His disciples is a blueprint for us to go by as we build our prayer lives. We have looked at five principles for prayer from the model prayer:! Prayer involves the PATERNITY of God! Prayer involves PRAISE and worship! Prayer involves PRIORITIES that are kingdom-focused! Prayer involves PROVISION of our need! Prayer involves PARDON for those who ask! There is a sixth and final principle that I want us to look at, and it is found in verse 13. According to Jesus:! Prayer involves PROTECTION and direction for life! And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.! Prayer is the means through which we draw strength for the challenges of life. A cosmic battle involving unseen forces is raging all around us. There are two kingdoms that are in conflict with each other the kingdom of light and the kingdom of darkness. The Christian life is not a luxury cruise; the Christian life is a battleship. One of the illustrations used in Scripture to describe the Christian is that of a soldier. The believer is a soldier who receives his or her orders from our Commander in Chief.! 2 Timothy 4:7 - I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.! 1 Timothy 6:12 - Fight the good fight of the faith.!

As believers we are entrenched in a battle. The outcome of the war has already been decided. Jesus secured victory for us at the cross. He rendered the enemy defeated and powerless through His resurrection. As His victorious kingdom is advancing, the battle is now being fought over the souls of men and women and children. Though he is defeated, we have a very real enemy who is trying is dead level best to prevent the church from living in the victory that Christ has secured for us.! Ephesians 6:10-12 - Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the wholes armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.! In light of this battle, we are commanded to take up the armor of God. We cannot resort to fashioning our own weapons for the battle, for the arm of flesh is of no value. We can t win a spiritual battle with worldly weaponry or tactics. We need the armor of God that includes:! belt of truth! breastplate of righteousness! sandals of the gospel! shield of faith! helmet of salvation! sword of the Spirit! Once we are dressed for battle, we are to make our way to the battlefield!! Ephesians 6:18 - Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.! Life is a war. Failure to understand this will lead to disillusionment in your life. Prayer is the means by which we draw strength for the battle. Prayer is the way that we do battle. Apart from prayer, we are rendered powerless to meet the trials of life, our witness will be ineffective, and our all ministry efforts will be in our own puny strength.! Your life is in the crosshairs. Your name is on the enemy s hit list.!

But most people do not believe this in their heart. Most people show by their priorities and their casual approach to spiritual things that they believe we are in peacetime, not wartime.! In wartime, the newspapers carry headlines about how the troops are doing. In wartime, families talk about the sons and daughters on the front lines, and write to them, and pray for them with heart-wrenching concern for their safety. In wartime, we are on the alert. We are armed. We are vigilant. In wartime, we spend money differently - there is austerity, not for its own sake, but because there are more strategic ways to spend money than on new tires at home. The war effort touches everybody. We all cut back. The luxury liner becomes the troop carrier.! John Piper - Until you believe that life is war, you cannot know what prayer is for. Prayer is for the accomplishment of a wartime mission. It is as though the field commander (Jesus) called in the troops, gave them a crucial mission ("Go and bear fruit"), handed each of them a personal transmitter coded to the frequency of the general's headquarters, and said, Comrades, the general has a mission for you. He aims to see it accomplished. And to that end he has authorized me to give each of you personal access to him through these transmitters. If you stay true to his mission and seek his victory first, he will always be as close as your transmitter, to give tactical advice and to send in air cover when you or your comrades need it.! Prayer is a wartime walkie talkie. Yet we have taken it and reduced it to nothing more than a domestic intercom whereby we make our demands of God as if He were some kind of cosmic bellhop. If we truly understood the nature of the conflict we are currently engaged in, we d appreciate prayer much more than we do. We would have a passion for it and would make it the priority of our lives.! Here in verse 13, Jesus clues us in on the seriousness of the battle. He shows us that prayer is the means by which we are empowered. Prayer is the means by which God protects and directs our lives.! Each of the three requests that apply to our lives encompass all that we will ever face in life. The request for bread in verse 11 deals with present needs. The request for forgiveness in verse 12 deals with past sins. The request for protection here in verse 13 deals with future circumstances.! The believer is to trust God with his or her life.!

How does God bring protection and direction to our lives as Christ s disciples? Jesus shows us a few ways here in these well-known verses.! He leads us in right PATHS! And lead us not into temptation! Prayer acknowledges the truth that God is the sovereign director of our lives. There is not a single thing that has ever happened to you or that ever will happen to you that God does not allow to happen. I will never find myself facing a situation that catches God by surprise.! He is Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. He is the sovereign orchestrator and chief architect of human history.! Proverbs 19:21 - There are many plans in a man s heart, nevertheless the Lord s counsel that will stand.! I could preach a whole sermon from just these two words Lead us! I need His leadership in my life. Left up to myself, I would live my life going around in circles. I need GPS God s Positioning System.! Lead - means to bring into! This phrase acknowledges that our lives are not the composite of just random, meaningless, and coincidental circumstances. Your life is not an accident. You are not here by chance. You exist this very moment in time all because you were in the mind and heart of God before time even began.! God knows the exact number of the hairs of your head.! The phrase lead us is declaration of our submission to God whereby we recognize that our lives belong to Him. We trust Him to lead us in the right paths. Though God leads us in the right paths, that doesn t necessarily mean that He leads us down the easy paths.! Matthew 7:13-14 - Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.!

Jesus said that the path that leads to life is a hard path to travel. We are kingdom citizens, and our citizenship is not of this world. Along the way to our celestial home we will encounter much adversity.! Scripture says that Paul and Barnabas encouraged the church and reminded them of this truth:! Acts 14:21-22 - When they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.! I remember one of the hymns that we used to sing in the church I grew up in:! In shady, green pastures, so rich and so sweet, God leads His dear children along; Where the water s cool flow bathes the weary one s feet, God leads His dear children along.! Then, the chorus says:! Some through the waters, some through the flood, Some through the fire, but all through the blood; Some through great sorrow, but God gives a song, In the night season and all the day long.! No matter what we face in this life as believers, we can trust our Father to lead us in the right paths. Specifically, Jesus says we are to pray, Lead us not into temptation.! Temptation - word in Greek is peirasmos and it is a neutral word that refers to testing or proving! When we hear the word temptation, we immediately associate it with a solicitation to evil. Jesus is not saying that we are to pray that God doesn t lead us into evil.! God doesn t tempt us to do evil. James tells us this much:! James 1:13 - Let no one say when he is tempted, I am being tempted by God, for God cannot be tempted with evil, and He Himself tempts no one.!

Though God does not tempt us, He does test us.! James 1:2 - Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.! God s leadership in our lives will involve times of testing and seasons of trial. God intends for testing to prove our character, while Satan intends for temptation to destroy our character. So, when Jesus tells us to pray, Lead us not into temptation, this is a plea in the disciple s life that recognizes our weakness. We are prone to fail the test and cave in to the enemy s temptation.! This request is a safeguard against self-sufficiency and carelessness. We will not be free from temptation and the presence of sin until we are with the Lord. We must be diligent!! When we pray, Lead us not into temptation, we are acknowledging our weakness to God and praying that His direction in our lives will not involve situations whereby we will be faced with the pressure to sin against Him.! Tests will come, and of that we can be sure. But I have never met a Christian who looked forward to one and prayed for one to come his way. Why? Because we are well aware of our weakness and of our propensity to sin against God. We have no desire to be in a place where a trial might lead to an opportunity for us to sin. We resist trials and certainly don t desire them, but we are to count it all joy when we faced with them. Trials will strengthen our faith when we respond to them in an appropriate way.! He delivers us from Satan s PLANS! but deliver us from evil.! When we pray, Lead us not into temptation, we are praying for God s direction, and when we pray, Deliver us from evil, we are praying for God s protection.! The NIV translates it this way Deliver us from the evil one.! Warren Wiersbe - Satan has been caricatured so much over the centuries that most people don t take him seriously or even believe he exists. To them Satan is a myth, an ugly red creature with a forked tail, pointed ears, and a malicious smile who carries a pitchfork. The Bible paints an entirely different picture, and it s nothing to laugh at.!

One of Satan s titles in Scripture is the Tempter.! Trials can give way to temptation. God tests, but Satan tempts. The difference is the intention behind the test. God tests us to prove what is in us, while the devil tempts us to sift us and destroy our faith.! We see this illustrated in the life of Joseph. God allowed Joseph to be sold into slavery, though it was the decision of his brothers to do so. He allowed Joseph to be in Potiphar s house where Potiphar s wife would try to seduce him, though it was her decision to do so and then slander him when he reused her advances. God then allowed Joseph to be thrown into prison for something that he did not even do. All of this was a test in Joseph s life to prove his righteous character.! Joseph acknowledged this when he later confronted his brothers:! Genesis 50:20 - But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good.! Perhaps is this truth nowhere better illustrated than in the life of Job. What Satan intended as a temptation, God intended as a test. Satan s plan was to reduce Job to a crust of bread so that he would curse God and die. God allowed the enemy to have access to Job s life, and so proved Job s character.! Joseph and Job met the trial with success and were delivered from the plans of Satan. But not every story in Scripture is a success story. There were occasions of failure in the lives of God s servants.! Abraham was called by God to uproot his family and follow the leadership of God to the promised land. Once there, he encountered a famine and fled to Egypt. Once there, he lied and nearly lost his wife.! Israel was tested by God in the wilderness, and instead of passing the test, they failed and caved in to the temptation of the enemy. They died in unbelief and wandered forty years rather than believing God s promises.! David was tested in a season of his life, and the test became a temptation as Satan solicited him to number the people of Israel. His disobedience brought about a plague that claimed the lives of thousands.!

What God intends as a test to build our faith, Satan intends as a temptation to destroy our faith. This is why Jesus teaches us to pray, Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. In essence, we are praying, Lord, don t ever lead us into a trial that will present such a temptation that we will not be able to resist. Rather, deliver us from any trial that would subject us to the enemy of our soul!! Praying this way is laying claim to the promise of God:! 1 Corinthians 10:13 - God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape, so that you will be able to endure it.! You and I are no match for the enemy, but the enemy is no match for our Father. Satan is a lion who is seeking someone to devour. However, greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world.! He rules us with total POWER! For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.! In our need for direction and protection in life, this closing phrase of the Lord s Prayer is comforting. It is also a declaration of our faith.! The sovereignty of God is one of the most comforting truths in all of Scripture. There is nothing that will ever happen that will thwart His plans and purposes. What God has decreed will come to pass! I now can resign from being chairman of the board of the universe.! The truth that the kingdom, power, and glory belongs to our Father will sustain us through the trials and testings of this life.! Ephesians 3:20-21 - Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.! The power of God is essential for the Christian life, and nothing activates God s power in our lives like prayer does.! Let s summarize our study of this magnificent blueprint for prayer that Jesus gave us:!

Prayer involves the PATERNITY of God It is a matter of relationship.! Prayer involves the PRAISE of God It is a matter of worship.! Prayer involves PRIORITIES that are kingdom-focused It is a matter of citizenship.! Prayer involves PROVISION of need It is a matter of stewardship.! Prayer involves PARDON for those who ask It is a matter of fellowship.! Prayer involves PROTECTION and direction in life It is a matter of discipleship.! In his book, Alone With God, pastor John MacArthur quotes an unknown author who summarizes well the impact of the Lord s Prayer as a pattern for all true prayer in our lives:! I cannot say Our if I live only for myself with no regard for those around me.! I cannot say Father if I do not endeavor each day to act like His child.! I cannot say Who art in heaven if I am laying up no treasure there.! I cannot say Hallowed be Thy name if I am not striving for holiness and Christlikeness in my life.! I cannot say Thy Kingdom come if I am not doing all in my power to share the gospel with lost people, and hasten that wonderful day.! I cannot say Thy will be done if I am disobedient to His Word.! I cannot say On earth as it is in heaven if I will not serve Him here and now.! I cannot say Give us our daily bread if I am dishonest and take for myself what does not belong to me.! I cannot say Forgive us our debts if I harbor resentment or ill will toward anyone else.! I cannot say Lead us not into temptation if I deliberately place myself in its path.! I cannot say Deliver us from evil if I do not put on the whole armor of God and stand my ground against the enemy.!

I cannot say Thine is the kingdom if I do not give the King the loyalty due Him as a faithful subject.! I cannot say Thine is the power if I fear what men may do to me.! I cannot say Thine is the glory if I live to seek honor only for myself.! I cannot say Forever if the ambition of my life consists merely of the here and now.
