Ringing of the Chimes The sounding of the chimes, representing God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is an invitation to prepare for worship through this time of silent reflection and meditation. Prelude Am I A Soldier Of The Cross? arr. R. Hughes Bringing of the Light Michael Eldridge, acolyte Kara Eldridge, crucifer THE WORSHIP OF GOD *Call to Worship One: Open our lips, O God. All: May our voices rise in prayer and thanksgiving. One: Open our minds, O God. All: Help us to know and do your will. One: Open our hearts, O God. All: Fill us with compassion and love. One: Open our hands, O God. All: Guide us to serve you with our whole lives. *Hymn of Praise No. 747 Lead On, O King Eternal Based on 1 Tim. 6:12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Lancashire *Affirmation of Faith One: Christians, what do we believe as Cumberland Presbyterians? All: We believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended to the grave. The third day He arose from the dead. He ascended into heaven, where He shall sit at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from where He shall judge

the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the everlasting life. Amen. *Gloria Patri Greatorex Prayers of the People The Lord s Prayer (In Unison) Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Musical Response No. 821 Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy upon us. (Choir & Congregation) Assurance of Pardon I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Day by day, I know you will provide me strength to serve and wisdom to obey; I will seek your loving will to guide me o er the paths I struggle day by day. I will fear no evil of the morrow, I will trust in your enduring grace. Savior, help me bear life s pain and sorrow till in glory I behold your face. Angels watching over me, day by day. Children s Message Marianne Sharp *Hymn of the Word No. 756 Soldiers Of Christ, Arise Diademata The Reading Of The Word Old Testament Lesson Jeremiah 31: 27-34 Hope in God s Promise 27 The days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will plant the kingdoms of Israel and Judah with the offspring of people and of animals. 28 Just as I watched over them to uproot and tear down, and to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, declares the LORD. 29 In those days people will no longer say, The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children s teeth are set on edge. 30 Instead, everyone will die for their own sin; whoever eats sour grapes their own teeth will be set on edge.

31 The days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them, declares the LORD. 33 This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time, declares the LORD. I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, Know the LORD, because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more. New Testament Lesson 2 Timothy 3:14 4:8 A Final Charge to Timothy 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. 6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race,

I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. *Gospel Luke 18:1-8 The Parable of the Persistent Widow Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, Grant me justice against my adversary. 4 For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, Even though I don t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won t eventually come and attack me! 6 And the Lord said, Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth? Leader: This is the Word of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. Prayer of the Word Homily Fight The Good Fight Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:14-4:8 Text: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race. (vs. 7) Elder Terry Sanders
