The Murphy-Proud Collection is a large Privately acquired and held collection of ORIGINAL Illustrated London News and Graphic Newspaper illustrations from the 19th and early 20th centuries ALL featuring Irish related stories, themes and illustrations. They have been in the family's ownership and possession for generations and are only now being released for sale. The Murphy-Proud Family hail from Dublin, Ireland and Oxfordshire in the U.K., but now live in Dallas, TX. What makes these illustrations ALL THE MORE INTERESTING, historically, is the fact that they view the 'Irish Problem" from a distinctly British point of view. After all, the Illustrated London News and The Graphic were weekly London publications. The illustrations can even be categorized, in many cases, as being British propaganda pieces. You will note that many of the descriptions of the Irish and the events unfolding, are dealt with in a manner that is often 'less sympathetic' to the Irish point of view and much more leaning towards the 'troublemaker' or 'vagabond' depiction of the Irish! They are Historically accurate in that the events did in fact happen...but distinctly 'biased' in their interpretations of what was happening!
In all fairness to the ILN and the Graphic, not all of the illustrations are partisan in their depictions of Irish life in the 19 th Century. Many of them are indeed, extremely accurate sketches of Irish Scenes. The various illustrators, including Aloysius O Kelly, were very thorough and talented in their sketching, so much so, that they even received mention and praise from none other than Vincent Van Gogh in 1882. This makes them an ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING historical record of Irish Life in the 19 th Century. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Collection deals with a large range of Irish issues, from the Great Famine to Irish Emigration, Tenant Evictions, Boycotting, Moonlighters, The Fenians, Land League, Home Rule, Gun Running, etc. Some of the MANY IRISH issues that they record include: The Great Famine and its aftermath:
Irish Emigration to the US: The Irish Land League and the fight for the rights of Irish People to own land in their own Country:
The political fight for Home Rule and the great parliamentarians that were John Dillon, Charles Stewart Parnell and others: Irish Poverty, both urban and rural:.
The rise of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), the Fenians and the Irish Volunteers: They deal with the events leading up to the 1916 Easter Rising:
They deal with mass evictions of farmer tenants following the Great Famine: Other issues and events dealt with by the illustrations include: The Royal Visits of 1849, 1871, 1885, 1888 and 1903:
The Phoenix Park Murders: The Lakes of Killarney:
Irish Country Scenes and Depictions of Irish Country Folk: Scenes from Galway, Clare, Cork, Derry, Dublin, Belfast, Mayo, Roscommon, Kerry etc.:
The Rise of the Boycott Tactic: AND MUCH, MUCH MORE! We have attempted to be as thorough and detailed, as possible with our Posts on each print, with multiple articles and links to online articles on each piece. Our own observations and commentary on the content of each print is exactly that. It is OUR opinion and interpretation and is not designed to offend. We are EXTREMELY PROUD of our Irish History and ABSOLUTELY LOVED cataloging these prints and writing our blogs on each. It was hard, but PASSIONATE and WORTHWHILE WORK and we feel that these prints deserve the effort. If you are Irish or Irish American (or simply a lover of history) then these prints are TO DIE FOR. They are ALL ORIGINAL. They are NOT MODERN REPRINTS. They are the ACTUAL newspaper sketches of the time, just as they would have been viewed and read by London Folk on the day of release of the Weekly Edition in the 19 th Century. Just possessing one of these, in their SUPERB ORIGINAL CONDITION binds and ties you to the History of your Ancestors.
The Images that they record are not just historical in their significance BUT they give you a TRUE and REAL connection to your ancestors, to their trials and tribulations, to their harsh survival conditions and in many cases, highlight their ABSOLUTE NECESSITY to improve their lives, be that by way of EMMIGRATING to the US to start a new life of FEEEDOM in a new land or their decision to stay in Ireland and FIGHT their oppressors, both violently and politically to gain their FREEDOM and basic rights as human beings. As a PROUD IRISHMAN I repeat the Call that we MUST NEVER forget our past. We can forgive our oppressors and indeed MUST forgive them, but we CANNOT FORGET WHENCE WE CAME FROM. These images constitute the very FIBRE OF OUR EXISTENCE. They represent the ESSENTIAL GENETIC CODING THAT DEFINES WHAT BEING IRISH REALLY MEANS!
