a sacred space in a busy world The light shines in the darkness John 1:5 PROGRAM GUIDE September 1, 2014 to February

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. John 1:5 Through our faith we are called to share the Light of Christ to help those who may be experiencing darkness. Sometimes this light shines through us directly and other times indirectly when we are following Christ s call. When we are authentic and true to our calling we are revealing our most radiant selves to the world. Through this radiance of light and love we overcome darkness even amidst the most challenging times. Sometimes we need to be able to create space to allow Christ s light to shine forth. In order to do so we need to take a step back and have a day away or a retreat to allow God s light to fully radiate through us. Through our retreat ministry we strive to offer you a sacred space to allow God s love and light to shine through you fully. We are here to welcome you, walk with you, and shine light upon you as you journey through your purpose-filled life. Catharine King Executive Director cking@providencerenewal.ca My husband and I love to go canoe camping. Being in nature is beautiful, peaceful, and, at night, very dark. At times the night sky provides just enough light to see where we are going. Most times it is pitch dark and we need a flashlight to shine light in the darkness and guide us. Light is a beautiful metaphor for our spiritual lives. Light illumines, provides warmth, and comfort. We all need the light of Christ to shine on the dark areas of our lives where we are most in need of God s healing and mercy. May our programs bring you into that Light and guide your path as you continue your life s journey. As the Light in you shines more brightly may it shine before others so they see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven (Matt 5:16). Cover design by Bro. Louis Andreas Debbie Doornbos Program Director ddoornbos@providencerenewal.ca

DAYS OF PEACE WITH PEACE IN OUR HEARTS SHALOM! Saturday, September 20 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm Debbie Doornbos In a world where there is often conflict and pain, our prayer life can ground us and help us remain peaceful even in the midst of chaos. On the eve of the International Day of Peace, we will explore how we can cultivate peace in our environments by attending to our own hearts. We will experience various ways to pray as a means to cultivating peaceful hearts including walking the labyrinth, body prayer, silence, and conversation. The prayer of St. Francis, Make Me a Channel of your Peace, will be our mantra. $30.00 If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other. Mother Teresa LABYRINTH WALK FOR PEACE Sunday, September 21 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm Debbie Doornbos On this International Day of Peace, established by the United Nations in 1981, we invite you to come and walk the labyrinth as a prayer for peace peace in our hearts, peace with one another, peace with creation and the world. We will begin with a brief explanation of the labyrinth followed by a prayer and a candle light walk to the center of the labyrinth and back out again. All are welcome. Free will offering Debbie Doornbos enjoys working with people and helping them grow in their spiritual journey. She has a passion for small faith communities and life transitions. Debbie is a professional facilitator, retreat leader, and adult educator, who has worked in the human relations field and in parish mission ministry. LEARNING FROM THE MYSTICS ARE YOU A MYSTIC? Thursday, October 9; 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Fr. Thomas Ryan Mysticism is not unique to Christianity, and Christian mystics share many characteristics with the mystics of other religions. On this day we will seek a clear understanding of mysticism in general; then we will focus our attention on what is distinctive about Christian mysticism. The treasure trove of Christian mystical writings testifies that the mystic is one who is consciously immersed in the experience of God s closeness and love in daily living. For Christians, therefore, the mystic is not a special kind of person everyone has the potential to be a special kind of mystic. It is an experience every one of us can know firsthand. $75.00 (Register before September 26 and save $5.00) Includes buffet lunch Fr. Thomas Ryan, CSP, served as chaplain at McGill University, directed the Montreal-based Canadian Centre for Ecumenism for 14 years and was cofounder and director of Unitas, an ecumenical center for spirituality. He currently directs the Paulist North American Office for Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations in Washington DC. Fr. Tom s passion for the spiritual life is reflected in his 14 books and leadership of retreats in the U.S. and Canada. MYSTICS AND POETS: The Spiritual Journey through Poetry Saturday, October 4; 9:30 am to 3:30 pm Antoinette Voûte Roeder Poetry is word music. Like the wind in the gospel of John, it blows where it will and the poet has to be ready to go with it. So it is with those born of the Spirit. (Jn. 3:8) Join us in an exploration of the spirituality of poetry. We will look at poems by such spiritual masters and mystics as Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk, and Rumi, a Persian poet. Substantial time will be given over to writing, reflection, and sharing. Poets and those willing to give poetry a try are welcome. Space is limited! Register early. $75.00 (Register before September 19 and save $5.00) Includes buffet lunch Antoinette Voûte Roeder, M.Mus., is a poet and spiritual director. Antoinette has offered retreat days on Thomas Merton and other mystics, as well as on prayer, spirituality, and poetry. She has been published in anthologies, journals, and magazines, and has two volumes of poetry in print. She is presently working on a collection of poems to accompany prayer. 6

HEALING AND SPIRITUAL HEALTH PRESSING THE PAUSE BUTTON: Self-Care and Spiritual Health Thursday, October 30 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Margaret Clark What would it be like to press the pause button and take a personal refreshment day away from home or a professional development day away from work? Our human spirits invite self-care just as much as our bodies and minds. Come spend a few hours taking your spiritual health pulse and develop a self-care plan that will nurture your spiritual health and assist you in the busyness of your life. A special invitation is extended to those in the caring professions who value self-care and spiritual health and are yearning for some down time. Optional: Stay Wednesday and/or Thursday night. Call for details. $75.00 (Register before October 15 and save $5.00) Includes buffet lunch Margaret Clark has served others through adult education, spiritual direction, professional chaplaincy, and faith community ministry. Drawing on his years in First Nations ministry, Archbishop Sylvain will use both the medicine wheel and the twelve steps as models for healing and growing personally and spiritually. Quiet time for reflection and prayer, fellowship, and optional sharing, informational sessions, music, and laughter will all be part of this weekend. Private Suite: $240.00 Single Room: $180.00 Commute: $140.00 Archbishop Emeritus Sylvain Lavoie of the Archdiocese of Keewatin-The Pas, is a missionary Oblate who has spent over 35 years ministering among the aboriginal peoples. THE ADVENT JOURNEY REDISCOVERING JOY IN OUR LIVES Advent Retreat Friday, November 28 (7:00 pm) to Sunday, November 30 (1:00 pm) Archbishop Albert LeGatt In a world thirsting and often wounded, where can we find or re-find joy in our hearts, relationships, communities, and in our day-to-day lives as Christians? Journeying through the Sunday readings of this Advent and turning to Pope Francis in The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium), we will prayerfully consider the sources of our joy in Christ: hope, being poor with the poor, personally encountering Jesus, conversion, and sharing our experience of our love of God. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. (Phil. 4:4) Private Suite: $270.00 Single Room: $220.00 Commute: $195.00 Archbishop Albert LeGatt became shepherd of the Archdiocese of St Boniface, MB on July 3, 2009. Prior to his appointment in St Boniface he was named Bishop of the Diocese of Saskatoon on July 26, 2001. COME TO THE QUIET A 24-Hour Retreat into Advent Stillness Friday, December 5 (5:30 pm/supper) to Saturday, December 6 (5:00 pm) Glenda Sartore Take a deep breath, slow down and come to the quiet. Spend 24 hours cultivating inner peacefulness and open yourself to an encounter with the Divine. Step away from the frenetic, commercial Christmas preparations, and prepare your heart for the coming of Christ. Through gentle body movements, breathing exercises, and meditation practices, Glenda will help you relax your body, calm your mind, and open your heart to create a space for the Word to take flesh in you this Christmas. Private Suite: $175.00 Single Room: $150.00 OPTIONAL: Consider staying for Saturday night to extend the experience. Price will vary depending upon your choices. Call for details. Glenda Sartore has explored yoga as an expression of her Catholic Christian faith through Prayer of the Heart and Body yoga and meditation as a Christian spiritual practice, an approach developed by Fr. Thomas Ryan. She is a Senior Yoga instructor with the Yoga Association of Alberta and teaches yoga in Sherwood Park and Edmonton. 8

NURTURING YOUR SPIRIT HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? Friday, January 30 (5:30 pm) to Sunday, February 1 (1:00 pm) Rita Sandmaier We all know the taste of fruit in season and the satisfaction it brings but what about the fruit of our spirit? God desires that we bear good fruit but not the kind that grows on trees. The qualities of the fruit we are to produce is found in Scripture: the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Gal. 5:22-23) What does it really mean to live these qualities on a daily basis? Why not take a weekend away and discover how you can nurture your inner garden by allowing the fruit of the spirit to till the soil of your soul. I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. John 15:1-2 Private Suite: $250.00 Single Room: $190.00 Commute: $150.00 Rita Sandmaier is an adult educator, pastoral minister, and spiritual director. Rita enjoys working with individuals and groups in reflecting upon one s journey of faith, exploring one s spirituality, and in deepening one s own inner journey. Rita has worked extensively within the area of pastoral ministry, particularly in the area of death, dying, and bereavement. She holds degrees in education and theology. UNPLUG: IT S YOUR DAY Quiet Day Away Thursday, September 18; Thursday, October 16; Tuesday, November 18; Monday, December 15; Wednesday, January 21; Wednesday, February 18 9:30 am to 3:30 pm Rita Sandmaier Multi-tasking! This is a word we are all familiar with today. In our fast-paced world our bodies, minds, and spirits often yearn to slow down and get off the roller-coaster of life. Why not take a day away and unplug from the busyness of your life? Enter the silence and open yourself to hear the voice of the Divine speak to your heart. We will begin the day together with prayer; the rest of the day is yours! Reflections/prayer suggestions will be available for your use. A single bedroom is provided. Ask for details about extending your stay. $45.00 Includes buffet lunch Spiritual Direction can be arranged in advance for an additional fee. 9

WAYS TO PRAY WINDOWS INTO ETERNITY: Praying with Icons Thursday, November 13 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Fr. Matthew Francis The word icon comes from the Greek word eikon, which means image. Icons usually portray Jesus, saints, angels, and other sacred images coming from Scripture. In the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition, icons are a key part of their worship. Fr. Matthew will help us understand how icons, holy images, can be a means of prayer and help us grow closer to God. $25.00 Fr. Matthew Francis is based in Edmonton AB, where he serves as Assistant Priest at St. Herman of Alaska Orthodox Sobor. He is married to Matushka Krista ( Matushka is a term of love and respect for the wife of a priest) and they have a son, Basil. Fr. Matthew travels to Whitehorse approximately every six weeks to offer Divine Services and provide leadership and encouragement to the Mission. CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER: Meeting the Silence Within 2 nd and 4 th Wednesdays, beginning September 10 7:00 pm to 8:15 pm Antoinette Voûte Roeder The bi-monthly contemplative prayer group is focused on bringing ourselves into greater awareness of God s Spirit-Breath breathing us into being every moment of our lives. Our breath is our prayer word. Because this kind of prayer is without words or images we simply turn to the Silence within, the Silence that met Elijah outside of the cave on the mountain. Each evening includes a spiritual reading, prayer, and brief sharing. Everyone is welcome. Registration required. $10.00 per term Antoinette Voûte Roeder, M.Mus., is a poet and spiritual director. Antoinette has offered retreat days on Thomas Merton and other mystics, as well as on prayer, spirituality, and poetry. She has been published in anthologies, journals, and magazines, and has two volumes of poetry in print. She is currently working on a collection of poems to accompany prayer. 10
