Moses Leads the People By: Gayle Guthrie Text Exodus 16, 17, 19, 20 Key Quest Verse These commandments I give you today are to be upon your hearts (Deuteronomy 6:6). Bible Background God gave the Hebrews a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire so they would know day and night that God was with them on their journey to the Promised Land. This showed His great power and His great love for His people. Moses perseverance helped lead the Israelites out of Egypt. The people were hostile and despairing, but Moses encouraged them to watch the wonderful way God would rescue them. Unit 4-EL-E-1

Lesson Quest What I want my students to: Know: Feel: Do: The experiences God s people had in the desert of Sinai. Respect for God and His laws. To be willing to trust and obey God. Leader s Devotion With each new generation it seems that there are fewer limits, or that children are more likely to challenge the limits that exist. You may have children in your class who have little respect for authority. It may be difficult to present an image of a sovereign God who deserves our respect and needs to be an authority in our lives. In Mark 13, Jesus speaks of the end times and says that children will rebel against their parents. A goal of these lessons is to have your students feel a respect for God and His laws. In preparation for these lessons spend time in prayer that God will help you in presenting these important truths and that your students will grow in a love and respect for God that will make them willing to submit to Him and His will. Unit 4-EL-E-2

Option A HOW LONG? Materials: None Procedure: Have your students stand in a line. Then tell them to hold their arms up in front of them. The point is to see who can hold their arms up the longest. As we continue with the story of Moses and the Israelites we find them traveling on their way to the Promised Land. They need to travel through the Sinai Peninsula to get there. This was desert country and often the traveling got rough. Was it hard for you to hold your hands up for a long time? Well, in our story today, Moses had to do just that. How do you think he did? Let them answer. Let s look into the book of Exodus to find out. GO TO THE BIBLE STORY Unit 4-EL-E-3

Option B ATMOSPHERE Materials: Tent, roll of brown and green paper, pillowcases, men s ties, other props that would add to a desert scene Procedure: Have your students join you in setting the scene for today s story. Set the tent up either in your classroom or outside if the weather permits. You may choose to set the tent up in advance if it is too time consuming. Make a palm tree out of the brown and green paper rolls. Set around any other desert prop you might have. Use the pillowcases and ties to place on their heads in biblical style. Our lesson today continues with the story of Moses. After the Israelites escaped from Egypt, they entered into the desert lands of the Sinai Peninsula. In their travels, they setup tents when they would make camp. I imagine they would sit in their tents and talk about all the things that had happened to them and about what might lie ahead. Why don t we go in the tent and talk about some of their experiences as Moses led them toward the Promised Land. GO TO THE BIBLE STORY Unit 4-EL-E-4

Bible Story Teacher Tip: Provide markers for students to highlight portions of the story in their Bibles Part 1 Materials: Bibles, worksheet entitled More Miracles On The Way, pencils, map showing the Sinai Peninsula (if you are in the tent, bring something that will serve as a hard surface for them to write on) Procedure: After Moses and the Israelites safely crossed the Red Sea, the first thing they did was give God praise for His protection and for their hope of a better life. They put the story to the tune of a song and joyfully sang and danced to the Lord. Before them was the Sinai Peninsula, which they had to cross in order to get to the Promised Land. The desert was a difficult territory to cross. What do you think might have been some of the problems they faced? Give them a chance to answer. (No water, not much food.) You are right. How do you think they solved their problems? Hear their answers. They soon learned that God was always with them and that He would provide for their needs. We are going to look at some of those experiences today. Pass out the worksheets entitled, More Miracles On The Way. Give them Bibles and pencils. Read the questions and the Scripture text to find the answers to write on the blank lines. Emphasize how God was always with them and providing for their needs. Part 2 Materials: Worksheet entitled, The Ten Commandments, Bibles, pencils (if you are in the tent, bring something that will serve as a hard surface for them to write on.) Three months after they left Egypt, God called Moses to climb up Mount Sinai. The LORD descended to the mountain in a dense cloud and spoke to Moses. He gave Moses ten commandments for His people to obey. These commandments are found in the book of Exodus, chapter 20. Let us use this worksheet to record all ten of God s commandments. Pass out the worksheet. Read Exodus 20 beginning with verse 1. As you finish each commandment, summarize it and write it beside the appropriate Roman numeral. Discuss what each one means. I. You shall have no other gods before me. (Nothing is to be more important than God not TV, video games, friends, sports, etc.) II. You shall not make for yourself an idol. (Are there people that we idolize? What about Tiger Woods, or Britney Spears? Do you have posters of people hanging on your walls? Do you have more of other people than things that represent God?) Unit 4-EL-E-5

Bible Story Continued... III. IV. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. (Do you hang around with friends who say, Oh, my God? Do you find yourself saying it, too? Are you really honoring God or are you not even thinking of Him? That might be using His name in vain.) Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. (Is Sunday a special day to remember God? What do you do on Sundays to remember Him and worship Him?) V. Honor your father and mother. (How do you act when you disagree with your parents or when you don t like what they ask of you? Do you show them honor? How do you talk about them to your friends?) VI. VII. You shall not murder. (Do you choose violence when someone makes you angry? Can that be the first step to murder?) You shall not commit adultery. (Do you plan to have only one person to share your life as husband or wife and with whom you will share sexual intimacy?) VIII. You shall not steal. (Do you realize that stealing means taking anything that belongs to another person even homework answers, copying tapes, or not saying anything when someone gives you too much change?) IX. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. (This actually includes any type of lie even the little white ones.) X. You shall not covet your neighbor s house. (This means that you should not look at what others have and be unhappy because you don t have everything that everyone else has. Learn to be content and thankful.) Unit 4-EL-E-6

Moses: Travel in Sinai VIDEO Materials: TV, VCR, videotape of either The Ten Commandments or The Prince of Egypt Quest Connection Last week we watched the second part of the story of the life of Moses. Today we will continue with the experiences the Israelites had while traveling in the desert country of the Sinai Peninsula. As we watch it, we might get a better idea of just how many times God provided for His people. We will also see Moses going up the mountain to receive the Ten Commandments. Most important, we will see how great and mighty and awesome our God is. Procedure: Select the video that you will use and preview it ahead of time. You may want to just show portions of the story. Since the story section divides our text into the miracles of provision and the giving of the Ten Commandments, you may wish to show those portions each week. Set up the equipment and have the video ready to start at your selected place. As you show the video, you may wish to pause it in order to ask questions or make comments. Close What did you think of the video? (Allow them a chance to answer.) Did it help you to see how God was with them and how He always provided for their needs? Doesn t it make you wonder how foolish if was for them to complain and fail to trust in God. Wasn t it magnificent when God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses? How do you think Moses was feeling when all of that was happening? Let them offer their thoughts. Moses actually heard the voice of God and experienced His presence. What an amazing experience! We can be so grateful that Moses wrote this all down for us so that we can know and understand God better. His commands can still guide us in making right choices today to live a righteous life. Unit 4-EL-E-7

LOGIC Desert Life Materials: A pail of sand, several pieces of paper, pencils Quest Connection The Israelites spent a lot of time in desert country. I have a pail of sand here. I imagine they saw a lot of sand, day after day,... after day! What do you think the children did for fun? As you look at this pail of sand, see if you can come up with some fun ideas of things to do in the desert. Procedure: Place the sand where everyone can see it and touch it. Divide the class into teams and give each team a piece of paper. Give them a time limit (10 minutes) to come up with as many fun uses of sand that they can think of. See who has the best and most ideas. Some ideas: Make sand castles Make a village Fill snake skins (shedded) to make a toy snake Sew fabric bags and fill them with sand to throw at targets Douse the family fire when its time to move on Make bricks Race to bury someone up to their heads Play tic-tac-toe with sticks Play hangman with a stick Make a maze with your feet (like in snow) and play wolf and rabbits (wolf chases rabbits through the maze) Color the sand and put it in glass jars for decoration Color the sand and make sand pictures Close You might think that the desert was a boring place for children, but I imagine that they came up with some fun things to do just like you did. Wherever we are, God has given us the ability to enjoy life if we choose to. Don t ever forget that. Optional Idea: Use sand to carry out one of the above ideas. Unit 4-EL-E-8

Ten Commandments Skit DRAMA Materials: Resource Page entitled The Ten Commandments Skit, costumes if you wish, props (sound effects for thunder, flashlights to represent lightning, representation of the tablets of stone, sound effect of stones crashing) Quest Connection We had a good time acting out the story of the ten plagues. Let s try the story of the Ten Commandments today. We will assign the parts and look through the script to see how the play will proceed. Procedure: Assign the parts of Narrator, Moses, and the golden calf. You will also need to appoint someone to do the sound effects and operate the lights. Explain that those who remain will act out the people. You can be the narrator or you can give this part to a student who reads well. Using the script of the The Ten Commandments, the narrator will read the story, pausing so that the action can be acted out. Close That was great fun! I think I will remember it for a long time. I hope you will, too. And, I hope it will remind us of God s great power and how He has given us some commandments to follow so that we can live a righteous life. Unit 4-EL-E-9

Love Commands MUSIC Materials: CD or tape of James Ward s Love Commands, copies of the lyrics Quest Connection How can we remember all ten of the commandments? One way to learn things is to put them to music. A musician named James Ward has done that with the Ten Commandments. When you learn his song, you know all of the commandments. Procedure: If you have the tape or CD of James Ward s song Love Commands, play it for the children. Hand out copies of the words so that they can follow along and try to sing along with him. The words for the last portion of the song are not included below, but they tell how Jesus can help us keep God s love commands. Play and sing it a couple of times, perhaps assigning different portions for students to do a solo. If you don t have the music, these lyrics would work well as a rap. Find the beat and let them say the parts. Some might want to clap and others tap the table to keep the beat going. Have fun with it! Close What did you think of the title, Love Commands? Why do you think James Ward chose that title? God didn t want to spoil our fun or take away our freedom by giving us these commands. This is one way that He demonstrated His love to us by preventing us from doing things that will only lead to pain and loneliness apart from Him. Unit 4-EL-E-10

Keep His Commands APPLICATION Materials: Resource Page entitled, Situations, copied onto card stock and cut into individual cards Quest Connection Do the Ten Commandments still apply today? What are some that do? Let them offer their thoughts. Let s see if you can figure out which ones apply to the situations on these cards. Procedure: Place the cards face down in the middle of the group. Choose someone to draw a card and read it. Then, have them try to figure out which command applies to that situation and what is the right thing to do. If necessary, allow other students to help out. Go through all of the cards this way. Close Is it always easy to recognize when one of God s commandments is being broken? We have to think about it, don t we? If we try to always remember God s commandments, we have a much better chance of doing His will and living a good life. Unit 4-EL-E-11

Written in Stone CRAFT Materials: Gray clay and strip cut out from Resource Page entitled, Commandments Quest Connection God wrote the Ten Commandments on tablets of stone for Moses and the Israelites. I have some clay here and I thought we could place them in this clay which will harden like stone. Procedure: Hand out the clay and have the students shape the clay into two tablets. Give them the strips with the commandments written on them. Have them gently press them into the clay so that they will stay, but they can still be read. Use some glue if you need to. Close The Israelites kept the tablets of stone with the Ten Commandments for many years. They put them in a sacred box called The Ark of the Covenant. Moses instructed them to always remember them and to teach them to their children. Your tablets are something you can keep to remind you of God s important commandments. Unit 4-EL-E-12
