NEXT WEEK S SECOND COLLECTION MISSION CO-OP DIOCESE OF TSHUMBE Next week, we will welcome Father Albert Shuyaka to our parish. Father Albert Shuyaka is a priest from the diocese of Tshumbe in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), the second largest nation in Africa. He will speak at all the Masses to share his firsthand experience of the many challenges and joys of doing God s work in the Diocese of Tshumbe. The Diocese of Tshumbe is a rural diocese located in a landlocked and isolated area in the center of the D.R. Congo. The total population of the diocese exceeds 2, 200. 000, of whom over 52 percent are Catholics. A good number of the lay faithful are peasants, artisanal farmers, and handworkers. Most people cannot afford to live with one dollar a day. The DRC has the world s second highest maternal and infant mortality rate. This heartbreaking situation came about mostly due to an atrocious war that claimed, according to the UN report, more than six million lives. The Congo war is rightly called the African World War since it is the deadliest war since World War II. The diocese of Tshumbe, besides losing most of its infrastructures, also had to face the scandal of thousands of widows, orphans, displaced and homeless people flocking the streets of towns and villages. Many of these people live with HIV/AIDS, malaria, and various diseases. Up to this day, the diocese is still struggling to recover from the effects of this war. Being the primary institution in the region that takes care of the basic needs of the population, including education, health care, and infrastructure, the diocese of Tshumbe has to seek funds to operate the many orphanages that it opened in response to these humanitarian crises. It is for the sake of these suffering members of the body of Christ that Father Shuyaka, asks us to prayerfully consider how we can help make a difference in the lives of these people. Without generous people like us, the diocese of Tshumbe will be forced to close some orphanages, the only place the parentless children call home. While war speaks the language of violence and hatred, we can send a message of love and comfort to our brothers and sisters of the diocese of Tshumbe. Page 4 Thank you for your prayers, your generosity, and your willingness to make a difference. HELP NEEDED FOR CTR S COMMUNITY MEALS MINISTRY Can you spare 4-5 hours on ONE SATURDAY A YEAR to help bring meals to homeless and food insecure neighbors in our community? Several years ago, our Fr. Art Johnson, SA reached out to parishioners in response to a request from the Loudoun County Salvation Army to provide hot meals to needy families on Saturdays when their children who qualified were not being fed at school. Every weekend volunteers from each of four local church communities take turns driving the Salvation Army canteen to two locations, in Sterling and Leesburg, and give out hot meals. The parish is in its 7th year of providing these meals. The number of people served has increased over the years from about 50 to over 200 some weeks. CTR s turn is the second Saturday of every month. HELP is needed to continue this ministry, especially drivers/servers. More details are available through the CTRCC.org website where you can click on the link to the SignUPGenius page. You are also welcome to contact Monica Sasscer, sasscermf@aol.com or 703-505-4520. PLEASE VOLUNTEER NOW! There are three ways to participate in this ministry: 1. Drive the Salvation Army canteen vehicle, this is our greatest need! The canteen has automatic transmission and you do not need a special license to drive it. 2. Serve and handout the food at each location. 2-4 servers are usually needed and families often volunteer as a team. The hours are approximately 3:30-6:30pm. 3. Cook the CTR casserole and bring it to the church parking lot between 3:00 and 3:30 on the designated Saturday afternoons. We also request donations of bottled water and fruit or fruit cups. MARRIED COUPLES RETREAT This retreat will be led by Fr. Paul Scalia on Saturday, July 8 at Our Lady of Hope from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Talks, adoration, confession, time with your spouse and Mass. Please register at www.arlingtondiocese.org/ couplesretreat2017. To learn more email Nancy McKeague at n.mckeague@arlingtondiocese.org.

INITIATION RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS (RCIA) REL. ED. 16-17 SCHEDULE Congratulations to all our Graduates! May your futures bring with you all the blessings you have received. And may you continue to share them abundantly with others. We wish parents and their families a happy and safe remainder of June whether you are staying in town or traveling. If I find favor with you, O Lord, do come along in our company We have not heard a First Reading from the Old Testament/Hebrew Scriptures throughout the Easter Season. But today on The Feast of The Most Holy Trinity, we might do well to listen to these readings. While the Trinity is indeed the central mystery of the Christian faith, it is also in simplest terms about ever present and loving relationships. The Lord who comes out of the clouds to stand with Moses is one who can journey with His People. God s descendants are only distant in their own condemnations. But the Father so loved the world that He sends not condemnation, but His Son. Finally, there are the familiar words in the Second Reading that reach out and draw us together every time we gather: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming Catholic and celebrating Baptism, Confirmation and Communion, or if you are from a different denomination and interested in knowing more about being Catholic, please contact Jay Cuasay, Director of Christian Formation at 703-430-0811 ext. 130 or Jay.Cuasay@ctrcc.org. REGISTRATION FOR RE 2017-2018 Stop by the Office during the week 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (closed for lunch 12:30-1:30 p.m.) OR See your RE Director during classes or make an appointment Deadline to Register is August 31, 2017 ($20 late fee for registration taken after). Adult volunteers and catechists are needed for next year. (Especially on Mondays). Don t forget about the parish and next year s RE needs in your plans for the upcoming months.
