LESSON 1 Why Pray LEARNING OBJECTIVES To briefly explain the main reasons why we pray To show how we can partner with God in establishing His Kingdom To teach the importance of prayer in Overcoming Temptation SCRIPTURE PORTION Luke 22:31-62; 1 Peter 5:8; Ephesians 6:18 MEMORY VERSE Matthew 26:41: Stay awake and pray that you won t be tested. You want to do what is right, but you are weak. 5

Prayer DISCUSSION QUESTIONS We Pray to Establish God s Kingdom Can the prayers of a third standard child really bring change in an entire neighborhood? Can one person s prayers establish God s kingdom in an entire school? Is this realistic? We Pray to Avoid/Overcome Temptation After a long tiring day of travel and celebration of the Passover, the disciples were very tired. Why did Jesus ask Peter, James and John to pray when they needed rest so badly? If I want to overcome temptation, what exactly should I pray? APPLICATION Temptations that trouble me the most: 6

Why Pray Pray for strength to overcome these temptations. FOLLOW UP (To be filled up before the next class) LESSON 1 How I practiced the Scripture Lesson during this week: 1. 2. 3. TAKE HOME ACTIVITY Peter Denies Jesus (Taken from kidsclubs4jesus). 7

Prayer Across 3. what a rooster does 7. disciple who denied Jesus 4. three times 9. a clergy man 12. saw Down 1. another name for a home 5. now, instantly 2. not low 6. to forbid 8. Cried 11. another name for Saviour 10. in the center of 8

LESSON 2 The Lord s Prayer LEARNING OBJECTIVES To familiarize children with the pattern of the Lord s Prayer To teach the importance of establishing God s Kingdom through Prayer and Action SCRIPTURE PORTION Matthew 6:9,10 MEMORY VERSE Luke 11:11: As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give good things to people who ask. 9

Prayer BIBLE PASSAGE Luke 11:8-11 Everyone who asks will receive. Everyone who searches will find. And the door will be opened for everyone who knocks. Would any of you give your hungry child a stone, if the child asked for some bread? Would you give your child a snake if the child asked for a fish? As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give good things to people who ask. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Come and Set Up Your Kingdom What do we mean when we pray, Thy kingdom come? Are we saying Let your Second Coming happen soon? Or are we saying something more? If I pray every day for God s Kingdom to be established in India, will the whole country submit to Jesus? 10

The Lord s Prayer May Everyone on Earth Obey You, As You Are Obeyed in Heaven If we are Christians, does this mean God s Kingdom is established in our hearts? Why should I ask God to establish His Kingdom in my heart? How can I make sure that God s Kingdom is established in my heart? LESSON 2 APPLICATION Some of my urgent prayer requests: Pray with the confidence that your Perfect Heavenly Father will not throw a snake at you when you request Him for a fish to satisfy your hunger. (God will never cheat you, when you pray to Him for your deep-felt needs) Some things I want to praise God for: 11

Prayer Always begin your prayer with an attitude of praise and worship, wanting to honor the Lord in your prayer, as well as your life. I am making a commitment to pray for the Establishment of God s Kingdom in the following places (e.g., neighborhood, family, etc). Back up your prayer with practical witnessing. Areas of my life where I have not been very obedient (e.g., in studies, in obeying parents, etc.). Submit each area of your life to the Lord, doing what pleases him (not what pleases you alone). TAKE HOME ACTIVITY (Taken from Calvary Kids Pages). Connect the dots to find out what the child is doing. 12

The Lord s Prayer LESSON 2 CLUE: The child is praying for the Establishment of God s Kingdom in her School! You must do the same! 13

Prayer FOLLOW UP (To be filled up before the next class) How I practiced the Scripture Lesson during this week: 1. 2. 3. 14

LESSON 3 How to Pray LEARNING OBJECTIVES To teach the right balance between aggressiveness and humility in prayer To show the importance of praying others-centered prayers SCRIPTURE PORTION Genesis 18:17-33; James 4:3 MEMORY VERSE Psalm 8:4,5: And I wonder, Why are people so important to you? Why do you even think about them. But you made them almost like gods and crowned them with glory and honor. 15

Prayer DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Attitude of Humility People say we must demand our rights from God. (Example: Lord it is my birthright to have enough money. So you better give me the money I need ) Is this the correct way to pray? Why or Why Not? Attitude of Selflessness Abraham poured out his heart in prayer for Lot. What attitude of prayer does this verse teach? APPLICATION This week, I commit to pray for the following people: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 16

How to Pray TAKE HOME ACTIVITY God Answered Abraham s Bold and Humble Prayer LESSON 3 17

Prayer FOLLOW UP (To be filled up before the next class) How I practiced the Scripture Lesson during this week: 1. 2. 3. 18

LESSON 4 What to Pray LEARNING OBJECTIVES To show children the different aspects of prayer To teach the importance of praising God during our Prayer Time SCRIPTURE PORTION Matthew 6:9-15 MEMORY VERSE Words scrabble on Page 21 contains the Memory Verse. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What are some of the special qualities of God that we can praise Him for? 1. 19

Prayer 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Praise God for these qualities, personalizing them. (Eg., I praise You Lord for Your holiness. Because there is absolutely nothing unclean in You, You will never ever fail me or betray me. Thank You for being my God). What if I don t feel like praising God on a really bad day? Does God expect me to praise Him even then? Some people say that we should pray only for our basic needs. We must not pray for luxuries. Is this true? Why or Why Not? APPLICATION This week, some things that I want to praise God for: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 20

What to Pray TAKE HOME ACTIVITY Memory Verse (Created online at www.gospelhall.org) LESSON 4 The following puzzle is a Dropped Verse. All of the letters in the white squares have fallen to the ground. Raise them back up into their places to see what the Memory Verse says. 21

Prayer Write down the Memory Verse: 1 Chronicles 16:34: DON T FORGET TO MEMORISE THE MEMORY VERSE! FOLLOW UP (To be filled up before the next class) How I practiced the Scripture Lesson during this week: 1. 2. 3. 22

LESSON 5 Pray for Others LEARNING OBJECTIVES To teach children whom to pray for. To encourage a commitment to regularly pray for at least some specific people. SCRIPTURE PORTION 2 Corinthians 1:11; Ephesians 6:18-20; Matthew 19:13; Luke 6:28 MEMORY VERSE 1 Timothy 2:1: First of all, I ask you to pray for everyone. Ask God to help and bless them all, and tell God how thankful you are for each of them. 23

Prayer BIBLE PASSAGES Ephesians 6:18: Never stop praying, especially for others. Always pray by the power of the Spirit. Stay alert and keep praying for God s people. Ask: According to this verse, whom should we pray for? Matthew 19:13: Some people brought their children to Jesus, so that He could place His hands on them and pray for them. Ask: According to this verse, whom should we pray for? Ephesians 6:19,20: Pray that I will be given the message to speak and that I may fearlessly explain the mystery about the good news. I was sent to do this work, and that is the reason I am in jail. So pray that I will be brave and will speak as I should. Ask: According to this verse, whom should we pray for? Luke 6:28: Ask God to bless anyone who curses you and pray for everyone who is cruel to you. Ask: According to this verse, whom should we pray for? DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Do I have to pray for others even if I don t have any special gift of intercession? Why? 24

Pray for Others The Bible says that a righteous person s prayer is powerful. But what if I m not very righteous and my faith is limited? Will my prayers be useful to anyone? Why or Why Not? LESSON 5 Our parents pray for our protection every day. In spite of this, we have accidents sometimes. Does this mean God doesn t answer our prayers for the protection of others? APPLICATION This week, make sure that you pray for other people: Pray God s blessings on three people who have hurt you (or whom you dislike): 1. 2. 3. Pray for three specific people who are doing God s work: 1. 2. 3. 25

Prayer Pray for three believers outside your family and friends circle: 1. 2. 3. Pray for your family members and relatives: 1. 2. 3. The NAME I picked up from the bowl: Don t forget to pray for these people EVERYDAY! FOLLOW UP (To be filled up before the next class) 26 How I practiced the Scripture Lesson during this week: 1. 2. 3.

Pray for Others TAKE HOME ACTIVITY Praying for Others (Taken from DLTK s Growing Together) LESSON 5 27

How God Answers Prayer LEARNING OBJECTIVES To show that God answers prayer with Yes, No and Wait To teach the importance of trusting God when the answer is No or Wait SCRIPTURE PORTION Habakkuk 1-3; 1 John 5:14,15; Genesis 19:27-29 MEMORY VERSE 1 John 5:14,15: We are certain that God will hear our prayers when we ask for what pleases him. And if we know that God listens when we pray, we are sure that our prayers have already been answered. 28

How God Answers Prayer DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Habakkuk was not upset with God even when the Lord refused to answer his prayer immediately. Is it possible for us to be as cheerful as Habakkuk? Isn t this a very difficult thing for ordinary Christians like us? Will God say No to our prayers most of the time? Should this be our expectation from Him when we pray? Sometimes God says Yes, but not in the way we expected. What should be our response when the Lord does this? LESSON 6 APPLICATION Some personal prayers for which God has said WAIT : 1. 2. 3. Ask God for the strength to wait patiently for these prayer requests without growing bitter. 29

Prayer Some personal prayers for which God said NO : 1. 2. 3. Thank God for these Rejected Prayers. God rejects every prayer that spoils the Complete Picture of your Life. Areas of my Life where I have displeased God (eg., dishonesty, treating people badly, etc.): 1. 2. 3. Commit yourself to pleasing God in these areas. Then, you will discover most of your prayers being answered! FOLLOW UP (To be filled up before the next class) 30 How I practiced the Scripture Lesson during this week: 1. 2. 3.

How God Answers Prayer TAKE HOME ACTIVITY Habakkuk s Attitude to Unanswered Prayer (Created by Crossword Puzzle Maker at www.gospelhall.org) LESSON 6 Refer to Habakkuk 3:17,18 in the NIV Version, for the Clues: Though the (Clue 4)tree does not bud and there are no (Clue 5) on the vines, though the (Clue 7) crop fails and the (Clue 2) produce no food, though there are no (Clue 3) in the pen and no (Clue 1) in the stalls, yet I will (Clue 6) in the Lord, I will be (Clue 8) in God my Savior. 31

What Blocks Prayer LEARNING OBJECTIVES To teach about the three obstacles to prayer To reveal the dangers of Ingratitude and Unforgiveness SCRIPTURE PORTION Philippians 4:6; Mark 11:25,26; 1 John 5 :14 MEMORY VERSE Mark 11:25,26 BIBLE PASSAGES Blockage 1: Ingratitude Philippians 4:6:. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. 32

What Blocks Prayer Ask: In this verse, prayer is linked with what other thing? Colossians 4:2: Never give up praying. And when you pray, keep alert and be thankful. LESSON 7 Ask: In this verse, prayer is linked with what other thing? 1 Thessalonians 5:17,18: never stop praying. Whatever happens, keep thanking God because of Jesus Christ. This is what God wants you to do. Ask: In this verse, prayer is linked with what other thing? Prayer and thankfulness are linked together. We must get rid of the Blockage of Ingratitude and Bitterness towards God, if we want to see powerful answers to our prayers. Blockage 2: Unforgiveness Mark 11:25,26: Whenever you stand up to pray, you must forgive what others have done to you. Then your Father in heaven will forgive your sins. Ask: In this verse, what does Jesus specifically teach us to do while praying? Prayer and Forgiveness are linked together We must get rid of the Blockage of Unforgiveness to see powerful answers to our prayers. 33

Prayer Blockage 3: Self-Will 1 John 5:14: We are certain that God will hear our prayers when we ask for what pleases Him. Ask: According to this verse, when can we be hundred percent sure that God will answer our prayers? The purpose of prayer is not to just give us whatever we want It is to make us the kind of people God wants us to be. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Blockage 1: Ingratitude When the Israelites expressed a desire for meat, the Lord provided them with quails (Numbers 11). But after supplying them, He also killed many of them with a plague. Why did God do this? Does it irritate Him, when we ask Him for our material needs? 34 Blockage 2: Unforgiveness If I don t forgive someone, will God automatically stop answering my prayers? What is the connection between unforgiveness and answer to prayer?

What Blocks Prayer Blockage 3: Self-Will How can I know whether my prayer is according to God s will or not? 2 Corinthians 1:20 says, So, if my prayer is directly related to a promise in the Bible, then I can confidently expect a yes from God. God will say Yes if I ask for victory over temptation (1 Corinthians 15:57,58). God will say Yes if I pray for the salvation of family members (1 Corinthians 7:14). God will say Yes if I pray for healing (Isaiah 53:4-6). God will say Yes if I pray for safety in times of danger (Matthew 10:29-31). God will say Yes if I pray for basic needs like food, money for school fees, good friends, etc. (Philippians 4:19). God will say Yes if I pray for a good future (Jeremiah 29:11). God will say Yes if I pray for wisdom (James 1:5). God will say Yes if I pray for unity (John 17:23). God will say Yes if I pray for spiritual growth (Matthew 5:6). 35 LESSON 7

Prayer God will say Yes if I pray for forgiveness for my sins (1 John 1:9). God s stand on prayers for material things: [CLUE: Matthew 6:31-34 says, So do not worry, saying, What shall we eat? For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. ] APPLICATION Some of my unanswered prayers: 1. 2. 3. Some things that I m grateful to God for: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 36

What Blocks Prayer 6. 7. Even as you pray for Unanswered Prayers, keep in mind the things that you are Grateful for. This will help you to Pray with Gratitude, rather than Grumbling. Some people that I need to forgive: 1. 2. 3. FOLLOW UP (To be filled up before the next class) How I practiced the Scripture Lesson during this week: 1. 2. 3. LESSON 7 37

Prayer TAKE HOME ACTIVITY (Created online at http://gospelhall.org) The words above will fit into the following sentence: Mark 11:25,26: (Clue 1) you stand up to pray, you must (Clue 2) what others have done to you. Then your Father in heaven will (Clue 3) your sins. DON T FORGET TO MEMORISE THE MEMORY VERSE! 38
