FDP HERALD Fellowship of the Order of Dionysis and Paul Newsletter God is My Strength Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease. (Genesis 1:14; 8:22) In 45 BC Julius Caesar named January 1st New Years Day. However it wasn t until 1752 that England accepted the use of the gregorian calendar and followed suit with the rest of the christian world. Hitherto, this blesséd Isle had celebrated the New Year in line with the Persian Traditions as being the Vernal Equinox. This celebration probably owes it s origins back to the monotheistic religion of Zoroastrianism, founded in what is now modern Iran some 3500 years ago at least, and is still celebrated today as Nowrooz. This may well have made considerable sense to the English, given that Easter represented the Death and New Life of Christ - symbolically mimicking what they saw about them in the natural world, with the new shoots coming from the grave of the previous years harvest. Gabriel is considered the Angel of January, as well as the bringer of Birth & Death (and much more besides). It is interesting that the signifying letters of the Archangel s name are Gimel and Beth, meaning Camel and House respectively. Epiphany, on 6th January was an early christian celebration to represent the acknowledgement of the Birth of Christ by the Three Magi who come from the East. Perhaps they came across the Deserts by Camel lead by a star to a simple place - the house of God. FDP Herald 1

Gimel: Means Camel and has the numerical value of 3 Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh - The real ABC of Medicine. Gold (Aurum metallicum) has been used for thousands of years to bring light to the spirit. It s uses for deep-rooted unhappiness, emotional suffering, and depression still remain today. The affinity with the emotions tend to link gold with the heart, and as such has been used to treat heart problems. Frankincense (Boswellia serrata) is an excellent anti-inflammatory and has a tradition in treating arthritis, gut and stomach problems. In ayurvedic medicine it is used to treat joint and skeletal muscle pain. Latest medical studies have found Frankincense to be useful in treating Colitis, Asthma and Osteoarthritis. Myrrh (Commiphora molmol) was traditionally used to treat a variety of infections, ulcers and wounds, including leprosy and syphilis. It still remains an effective antiinflammatory, anti-microbial and analgesic. It seems particularly useful for stomach ulcers, inflamed tissues in the mouth and throat, such as gingivitis and pharyngitis. There is also on-going research into myrrh as an anti-carcinogenic. It is interesting that the order of these gifts show the healing of the Spirit first, then the body s inner foundation (bone and muscle), and lastly the healing of the outer surface. The gift of these three would indeed have been a wise one. Beth: Means House and the numerical value of 2 Withdraw into yourself and look; and if you do not find yourself beautiful as yet, do as does the sculptor of a statue Cut away all that is excessive, straighten all that is crooked, bring light to all that is shadowed Do not cease until there shall shine out on you the Godlike Splendour of Beauty; until you see temperance surely established in the stainless shrine. Plotinus, Ennead, 1,6, 9 FDP Herald 2

Mathew 2: v1-12 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him. When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. So they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel. Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also. When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way. Faith - Hope - Love Audio of Daily Office Click Here FDP Herald 3

Epiphany and The Magi An early fourth century painting on an arch in the catacombs of Priscilla in Rome shows the three Magi wearing Phrygian caps, full sleeved belted tunics and trousers, the garb of the priests of Zoroaster, the Persian prophet, who watched the heavens for the appearance of the star which would herald the appearance of the saviour-god. The winter solstice, which marks the lowest point of the sun and the longest night, heralds the beginning of the waxing of the sun. This annual rebirth of the immortal and unconquerable sun, and the life of the world that depends upon it, had always been a sacred and joyful time. Thus in the third century Aurelian (270 275 AD) sought to unite the different religions of Rome under the monotheistic head of the Sun-God Helios in the title of Sol Invictus. Mithraism, like Christianity, had as a main objective the union of all gods and myths in a vast synthesis the foundation of a new religion in harmony with the prevailing philosophy and political constitution of the empire. The similarity between Christianity & Mithraism was startling; indeed it is probably easier to outline differences than similarities. Among the followers of both this period was a time for rejoicing, and also a time for the acceptance and preparation of initiates for their initiation at the vernal equinox. In the year 273-4 C.E. the emperor Aurelian synthesised a number of pre-christian celebrations (Apollo, Attis, Baal, Helios, Horus and Mithras) into a single festival known as the Dies Natalis Solis Invicti or the birth of the Unconquered Sun on the 25 th of December. FDP Herald 4

The changes that have been made in the Calendar have introduced some confusion as to the date of Christmas. The Syrian and Armenian Churches cling to January 6 th, a day that once coincided with the winter solstice under the old Julian calendar, which did not fit in with the sun s year. In the West, the 6 th of January became the festival of his manifestation to the Three Kings. The wise men, or Magi were commonly known as Melchoir, Caspar and Balthasar, which in the old dispensation had messianic significance, were also given symbolic values by the Fathers of the Church, gold being the tribute to Christ s kingship, frankincense to his divinity, and myrrh the forecast of his death. In the Eastern Church, the 6 th of January was the festival commemorating Jesus birth and baptism. At a later date the visitation of the three wise men and the changing of water into wine at Cana were added to the 6 th of Jan. It was held that the day of baptism was also that of the Birth, because through baptism Christ was born on the Ides of January, thirteen days after the winter solstice.
