THE TEMPLE AND TWO WITNESSES 7

THE TEMPLE & TWO WITNESSES In our last lesson we dealt with Revelation 11:1-3. Let s review what we have seen so far. Rev 11:1 And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. During the seven-year Tribulation there is to be a temple at Jerusalem where worship has begun again. 8

THE TEMPLE & TWO WITNESSES Presumably this third temple will be rebuilt in the same area as the first two, Solomon s and Zerubbabel s. Rev 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. This will be a time when Gentiles have much control over Jerusalem. 9

THE TEMPLE & TWO WITNESSES Rev 11:3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. 10

THE TEMPLE & TWO WITNESSES God appoints two witnesses that will bring His message in those troublous times. The logical question is who are these two witnesses? If as I have stated before, the purpose of the Tribulation is for the salvation of the Jewish nation, then God is beginning at this point to deal once again with the Jewish people. 11

THE TEMPLE & TWO WITNESSES God accepts the true worshipers but rejects those apostate Jews that are linked with Gentiles symbolized by the outer court. These verses speak of a rebuilt temple. It is this temple in which the Antichrist will proclaim that he is God. It is obvious that here must be a temple in existence for this to take place. 12

THE TEMPLE & TWO WITNESSES 2 Thess 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 13

THE TEMPLE & TWO WITNESSES The message that these witnesses bring is that the Messiah will shortly reign over restored Israel as the light of the world. Remember what Jesus said to the Jewish leaders regarding His return. Matt 23:39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. We will now review the candidates that we presented in the last lesson. 14

THE TEMPLE & TWO WITNESSES There are four candidates. First: Elijah 1. Elijah was sent to Israel in a time of great apostasy to call the nation to repentance. (1KI 16:29-33). 2. Elijah had the power to shut heaven, that it would not rain. 1KI 17:1-4; 1KI 18:1. 3. Elijah wore coarse clothing. 1KI 1:3, 7, 8. 4. Elijah had the power to call fire from heaven. 1KI 18:36-39. 15

THE TEMPLE & TWO WITNESSES 5. Elijah did not die, but went up to heaven by a whirlwind. 2KI 2:11. 6. Elijah represented the prophets. Second: John the Baptist 1. John the Baptist was sent to Israel in a time of great apostasy to call the nation to repentance. MATT 3:1-2. 2. John also wore coarse clothing, and it was he who announced the Messiah of the New Covenant. MATT 3:3-4. 16

THE TEMPLE & TWO WITNESSES Third: Enoch 1. Enoch lived in a time of great wickedness, but pleased God. Gen 5:24, Heb 11:5. 2. Like Elijah, Enoch did not die, but was translated (raptured). Gen 5:24, Heb 11:5. 3. Enoch's name means "teaching." 4. Enoch was a type of the Church and was raptured before the Flood destroyed the earth. Gen 5:24. 17

THE TEMPLE & TWO WITNESSES Fourth: Moses 1. Moses lived at a time of great trouble for Israel. 2. Moses was God's deliverer for the Jewish slaves in Egypt. 3. God gave Moses the laws, which Israel was to live by. 4. Moses represented the Old Covenant, but most of all Moses represented the Law. 18

THE TEMPLE & TWO WITNESSES Keep in mind that these witnesses may instead be two of the latter-day remnant of Jewish believers that witness of Christ. My main problem with this view is that Elijah is prophesied to return. Mal 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: Now lets pick up where we left off last time. 19

OLIVE TREES AND CANDLESTICKS 20

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS REV 11:4 These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. Notice the parallel of this verse in Zechariah which portrays Israel as the light of the world under Messiah King- Priest. ZEC 4:1 And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep. 21 (Continued)

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS 2 And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: 3 And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. 4 So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my 22 lord? (Continued)

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS 5 Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. 6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. (Continued) 23

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS 7 Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it. 8 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you. (Continued) 24

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS 10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet [plumb line] in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth. 11 Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? (Continued) 25

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS 12 And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? 13 And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. 14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth. 26

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS Symbolically, in Revelation 11:4 we learn that the "two olive trees" are the two witnesses who preach under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (oil). The olive trees are directly connected to the candlesticks, which receive their oil continuously without attendance. This is contrary to the attention given to the candlestick by the priests in the Temple at Jerusalem. 27

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS There are seven lamps on top of each candlestick. The seven pipes connected to them represent the Seven-fold Spirit (Heb 1:9; Rev 1:4) prefigured by the seven lights (fullness of testimony). The two olive trees represent the civil and priestly office. The two olive branches in Zechariah are Zerubbabel and Joshua. 28

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS The two golden pipes of Zechariah 4:12 symbolize these two offices united in Messiah as King-Priest. The gold (oil) is the operation of the Holy Spirit through the King-Priest to the restored nation as light bearer. The King-Priest is the Lord of All, the King of kings, and Lord of lords (Rev 19:16). 29

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS The light of these candlesticks, continuously fed by oil, is to shine brilliantly in its sevenfold brilliance. These two candlesticks represent light in the darkness, the Law and the prophets of God. These witnesses stood in the very presence of God, the King of Kings. They will be encouragement to the "sealed" remnant of believers. 30

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS According to Zechariah, their power is not their own, but that of God's Holy Spirit. REV 11:5 And if any man will hurt them [the two witnesses], fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. The witnesses will be preserved from harm until their time comes. 31

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS This might be an indicator that Elijah is one of the witnesses, for he alone called down fire from heaven (1KI 18:21-38). 32

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS REV 11:6 These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. We have seen that Elijah had power to "shut heaven," but it was Moses that had the power of God to turn water into blood and bring plagues on the Egyptians. 33

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS These two witnesses will exhibit similar power. They could operate during the first 3-1/2 years, and as we have seen, a worldwide famine would correlate nicely with the drought caused by these witnesses. Otherwise, the ability of these witnesses to turn water into blood matches the judgments of the first and second trumpets. They could operate during a 3-1/2 year period either in first or second half. 34

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS It is my opinion that they operate during the first 3-1/2 years and are killed before the Temple is desecrated by the Antichrist (see 2TH 2:3-9; Rev 13:2). 2 Thess 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; (Continued) 35

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 36

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS Rev 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. According to Merrill F. Unger: Their [the two witnesses] message is Christ s lordship over the earth, proclaiming the soon coming of the King of kings to take possession of the earth. (Continued) 37

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS The two olive trees and the two lampstands (Zech 4:2-3) connect them with testimony that Messiah as King-Priest (the two olive trees in Zech 4 denote these two offices) will shortly reign over restored Israel as the light of the world. They have miraculous powers like Elijah and Moses. They are killed by the beast (head of the revived Roman Empire), Rev 13:1-10; 17:8, who ascends out of the abyss (cf. 9:1-12), but not until they have completed their testimony. 38

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS John Walvoord and others identify the Beast out of the abyss as Satan (Rev 9:11). If this is so, then it may be the Antichrist that does his bidding in killing the witnesses since according to Revelation 13 the Antichrist receives his power from or is embodied by Satan. Still others believe that this Beast is not Satan, but possibly one of his generals but the Antichrist may still do his bidding. Possibly the Beast may kill them directly as 39 stated in Revelation 11:7.

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS REV 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. This is the first mention of the word "beast" in Revelation. In Revelation 13:1 a beast comes up out of the sea. In Revelation 13:11 "another beast" comes "up out of the earth." 40

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS Three "beasts" are mentioned in Revelation, the Antichrist, the False Prophet, and the Beast out of the Abyss. Both the Antichrist and the Beast out of the Abyss make war with the saints (Dan 7:21; Rev 11:7). It is one or more of these "beasts" that causes the death of the two witnesses. Wherever the "beast" comes from, he comes from below (the netherworld, darkness), and he has the power given him by Satan. 41

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS REV 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. 2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. (Continued) 42

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS 11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. Notice the fourth "beast" of Daniel that made war with the saints: 43

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS DAN 7:19 Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet; 20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout 44 than his fellows. (Continued)

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS 21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them; 22 Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom. It is this horn that that came up that is the Antichrist. Finally, their time has come. The two witnesses are killed. 45

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS The saints of the most High, those who receive or possess the kingdom are, according to Merrill Unger: the saved Jewish remnant who pass through the Great Tribulation and inherit the kingdom and the covenants and promises made to Israel in connection with it. The kingdom will be eternal and the millennial reign of Christ will merge with the eternal state at the conclusion of the thousand years. 46

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS Now, returning to our text in Revelation 11: REV 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. 9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. (Continued) 47

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS 10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth. 11 And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. (Continued) 48

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS 12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them. 13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven. 49

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS The witnesses will lie dead in the streets of Jerusalem, which will have as much spirituality as did Sodom and Egypt. Sodom was a city of much wickedness and was judged by fire from heaven, while Egypt represented oppression to the Israelite slaves and suffered plagues. 50

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS Their bodies will remain where they fell for 3-1/2 days. All people will "see" them. CNN will most likely be on the scene with live coverage of this media event. For the Jews not to bury their dead would be to treat them with dishonor. This is going to be a party-time because the torment by the witnesses is over. 51

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS ACT 1:9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. While they are still gazing with astonishment into the sky at the receding image of the raptured witnesses the earth will begin to quake, and ten percent of Jerusalem will be destroyed with a loss of life of 7,000 of its citizens. 52

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS MATT 16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. As we saw in a previous lesson, there are three signs of Jonah given in the New Testament. 53

OLIVE TREES & CANDLESTICKS The death and resurrection of the witnesses after 3-1/2 days completes the third sign of Jonah, but this time, because of the Witnesses, salvation will come to Israel. The sign of Jonah is the resurrection. 54

THE SIGN OF JONAH 55

THE SIGN OF JONAH In the New Testament there are three signs given that qualify as the sign of Jonah, each having a significant impact on the Jews and their nation. MATT 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The first sign which we saw in Lesson 27 was that of the burial and resurrection of Lazarus. 56

THE SIGN OF JONAH The second sign was the burial and resurrection of Jesus. The third sign will be the death and resurrection of two witnesses. The first two signs were rejected by Israel, while the third sign will be accepted and lead to the salvation of the Jews of Jerusalem. 57

THE SEVENTH TRUMPET 58

THE SEVENTH TRUMPET REV 11:14 The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly. 15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. The time has now come for the declaration of the changing of the guard. God is taking over. 59

THE SEVENTH TRUMPET The second woe mentioned is a continuation of the woe judgments discussed in Lesson 24. The three woe judgments are the last three Trumpet Judgments, 5 through 7. 60

THE SEVENTH TRUMPET Man and Satan have had their run of things. Christ delivers up the Kingdom to the Father. 1CO 15:24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. 61

THE SEVENTH TRUMPET God is taking over the world from the hands of man and Satan. Jesus will take authority over the nations and go forth to conquer the forces of evil. REV 11:16 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, 17 Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy 62 great power, and hast reigned. (Cont.)

THE SEVENTH TRUMPET 18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. 63

THE SEVENTH TRUMPET The context of Revelation 11:18, the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, seems to refer to the resurrection of the righteous dead. The "elders" anticipate seven great events as they worship before Christ. 64

SEVEN GREAT EVENTS OF REVELATION 11:18 65

SEVEN GREAT EVENTS Seven Great Events 1. Christ has displayed His mighty power over all creation. 2. Christ has demonstrated Himself to be King of all kings. 3. Christ has observed the implacable anger of all nations against Himself. 4. Christ has manifested His righteous wrath against all those living in rebellion. 5. Christ has prepared the final judgment for all the unsaved dead. 66

SEVEN GREAT EVENTS 6. Christ has provided a gracious reward for all that believe and obey Him. 7. Christ has ordained eternal destruction for all that have corrupted the earth. 67

THE TEMPLE IN HEAVEN 68

THE TEMPLE IN HEAVEN REV 11:19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail. The Temple of God was opened in heaven, exposing the Ark of the Covenant as a reminder that God is a covenant keeping God. 69

THE TEMPLE IN HEAVEN The lightnings, voices, thunderclaps, earthquakes, and hail signify that the interlude is over, and the wrath of God is about to begin. 70
