Dear Liturgy Ministers Almost-summer greetings! I hope you are enjoying a more relaxed schedule now and are looking forward to a little down-time, whether staying at home or traveling far. When I was making this schedule, I tried to take into consideration the away dates many of you gave me. I hope I didn t miss anything. I apologize if you are scheduled at any of those times, but if you are, I would appreciate it if you would try to find a substitute or trade with another minister. And as always, if for any reason you can t serve at the time you re scheduled, please make every effort to find a substitute or trade with someone. If all else fails, then do give a call to the office or to me. Thank you for that! Since it IS summer, many people are away or will be away on vacation. As usual, vacation time puts a bit of a strain on the remaining ministers. Once more I have made use of the option on the scheduler. Thank you in advance for offering to fill in those blanks. You can come into the sacristy and write on the posted schedule or you can stop in on your way to Mass to see if help is needed. One added note: if you are new to your ministry, the positions give you a great opportunity to practice! But remember: At all times, especially during the summer when it s more likely you ll be needed at a moment s notice, dress neatly and appropriately for ministering at the altar: preferably dresses, skirts or dress slacks for women; suits, sports jackets and slacks or sweaters and slacks for men. Come ready to serve even if you are not scheduled. You know I ll find you! A little news: This month (June) makes it a year that Fr. Roy has been with us as pastor! And toward the middle to end of July it will be a year since Deacon Bill came on board. Happy Anniversary, Fr. Roy and Deacon Bill! And now some notes applying to specific ministries: s: Once again, now that school is out, I am going to attempt to schedule training meetings during the day. Anyone who has been thinking of becoming an altar server should come to the church on Tuesday, June 12 @ 1 PM or on Thursday, June 14 @ 3 PM to learn more about the ministry and what instruction would be needed. Spread the news among your friends. Questions or to let me know you intend to be at one of those meetings? Contact me at the parish office (455-2249) or by email: agoroch@stjchurch.org In July and August there will be opportunities for those who are already altar serves to meet with me and possibly Fr. Roy for continuing instruction and also, possibly... fun! Stay tuned. Ministers of Communion: You all have been and are being wonderfully flexible during this transitional period when we ve been adjusting to Fr. Roy s (and Deacon Bill s) rhythm of the rd Mass. Add to that the changes the 3 Edition of the Roman Missal brought to the way we experience the liturgy! And also add to that some other changes that we ve applied to the Communion Rite. It s definitely time to get together to reflect on the changes and to see where we go from here. That probably won t happen until a bit later in the summer, but do watch the bulletin for news. Meanwhile, please remember that at the 9 AM Sunday Mass, a permanent practice now is to have a mobile communion station. It will include Deacon Bill, if he s here, and one minister in addition to those scheduled,
or two additional ministers if Deacon Bill is not here. This station goes first to the cry room, then to the choir loft and possibly to the rear of the church, should the number of people warrant that. Making sure the choir and musicians are offered communion has become a bit problematic. It s a work in progress. s: These are still some good reminders First, don t move the ambo microphone. It s positioned so as to pick up your voice whether you are tall or short. Second, do speak in the direction of the microphone. Your lips do not have to be brushing it, but it does make sense to turn your head toward it, at least a little. Third, even with the microphone, use your big voice to be sure the people at the very back of the church can hear the word of God! It s almost impossible for you to be too loud. Fourth, as many a speech coach has admonished, enunciate! Make every word crisp and separate from the words before and after. Otherwise, the effect is one of mumbling or jumbling the words. Even people with sharp hearing might find it hard to understand the muffled word. And finally, slow down! Enjoy the words you are proclaiming. See what they describe. Taste them. Make them live. And a few more: When you come forward to proclaim the reading, please go all the way to the center to bow before the altar either alone or with the Cantor. Same thing on the way back to your seat. If Deacon Bill is not present, you are responsible for the Prayer of the Faithful. Before putting out the binder that holds the Prayer of the Faithful, be sure you have the right set of prayers. When you read the Prayer of the Faithful, be sure to stay at the music stand until the presider has concluded the closing prayer after the intercessions. After Mass, please return all the books and binder to the sacristy May God bless you with a refreshing and renewing summertime!
