EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST SEPTEMBER 23, 2018 Procession into the Church/Praise and Worship Ministry of the Word of God The Greeting and Response (Stand) I was glad when they said to me: Let us go to the house of the Lord. The Spirit is here: The promise of God. Let us pray. The Collect for Purity & Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires are known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Law Jesus said: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40 Kyrie Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. 2

The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Let us pray. Grant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. The Lessons Old Testament (Sit) Proverbs 31:10-31 Reader A reading from Proverbs. 10 An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. 13 She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. 14 She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. 15 She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. 16 She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. 17 She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. 18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. 19 She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. 20 She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. 21 She is not afraid of snow for her household for all her household are clothed in scarlet. 22 She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant. 25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children 3

rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all. 30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates. Reader Psalm 1 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Silence for meditation on the scripture.) (Stand) 1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; 2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. 4 The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6 for the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. (Silence for meditation on the scripture.) New Testament (Sit) 2 Timothy 3:12-17 Reader A Reading from 2 Timothy. 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you 4

learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Silence for meditation on the scripture.) Gospel Hymn (Stand) Holy Gospel (Stand) Mark 9:30-37 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. 30 They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise. 32 But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him. 33 And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, What were you discussing on the way? 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all. 36 And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. (Children, 4 years old through 6 th grade, please come to the Altar for a Children s Church blessing.) 5

Gospel Hymn The Sermon Nicene Creed (Stand) (Sit) (Stand) Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed: & We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the Let us pray for the Church and for the world, saying, Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer. 6

For the peace of the whole world, and for the well-being and unity of the people of God, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, in your mercy. For our archbishop, Foley Beach; for our bishop, Bill Atwood; for all the clergy and people of our diocese, especially this week, Christ Our King in New Braunfels, Texas, and for our own congregation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, in your mercy. For all those who proclaim the Gospel at home and abroad, and for all who teach and disciple others, including our missionaries, especially this week: Stephen and Cate Fierbaugh and family, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, in your mercy. For Don, our Rector, and Glenna, his wife, that the Lord would bless their sabbatical. Pour your Holy Spirit on them and endue them with your grace that they might return to this place renewed, refreshed and strengthened. Lord, in your mercy. Together, let us pray: Lord, your Word teaches us that when we give, you will open the windows of heaven and pour down a blessing until there is no need. We ask you to help each of us to meet the financial needs of this church. Lord, in your mercy. For our brothers and sisters in Christ who are persecuted for their faith, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, in your mercy. 7

For our nation, for those in authority and for all in public service, especially those in the US military, and for all first responders: police officers, fire fighters, and medical personnel. Lord, in your mercy. For all the blessings of this life, let us pray to the Lord. We invite your thanksgivings at this time (people may share here) Lord in your mercy. For all those who are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity, let us pray to the Lord. We invite your petitions at this time (people may share here) Lord, in your mercy. For all those who departed this life in the certain hope of the resurrection, in thanksgiving let us pray to the Lord. Lord, in your mercy. Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. The Confession and Absolution of Sin All who truly and earnestly repent of your sins, and seek to be reconciled with your neighbors, and intend to lead the new life, following the commandments of God, and walking in his holy ways: draw near with faith and make your humble confession to Almighty God. Silence; people sit or kneel 8

& Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. If you are a member of our Newcomer Teams, Welcome Teams, Hospitality Ministry, and/or Home Food Ministry, please stand where you are for a blessing. Prayer of Blessing The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. Amen. Ministry of the Sacrament The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with your spirit. Call 972-772-5525 if you would like a set of numbered envelopes. Offertory Anthem (Sit) Ensemble (Food offerings may be brought to the front of the Church.) Doxology (Stand) Holy Communion (Liturgy from the Church of Kenya) (Stand) Is the Father with us? He is. Is Christ among us? He is. Is the Spirit here? He is. This is our God. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are His people. We are redeemed. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right and our delight to give you thanks and praise, great Father, living God, supreme over the world, Creator, Provider, Savior and Giver, from a wandering nomad you created your family; for a burdened people 10

you raised up a leader; for a confused nation you chose a king; for a rebellious crowd you sent your prophets. In these days you have sent us your Son, your perfect image, bringing your kingdom, revealing your will, dying, rising, reigning, remaking your people for yourself. Through him you have poured out your Holy Spirit, filling us with light and life. And now we give you thanks because your Holy Spirit inspired the scriptures and leads us into all truth: he gives us power to proclaim your gospel to all nations and to serve you as a royal priesthood. Therefore with angels, archangels, faithful ancestors and all in heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, forever praising you and singing: Sanctus and (Kneel or Sit) Almighty God, owner of all things, we thank you for giving us your only Son to die on the cross for us who owe you everything. Pour your refreshing Spirit on us as we remember him in the way he commanded, through these gifts of your creation. On the same night that he was betrayed he took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my Body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. Amen. His body was broken for us. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them saying, Drink this all of you; this is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Now sanctify these gifts that they may become for us the Body and Blood of your Son, Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may be filled with your Holy Spirit and manifest your presence and power in the world. 11

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: and Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Alleluia! We are brothers and sister through his blood. We have died together, we will rise together, we will live together. Therefore, heavenly Father, hear us as we celebrate this covenant with joy, and await the coming of our Brother, Jesus Christ. He died in our place, making a full atonement for the sins of the whole world, and the perfect sacrifice, once and for all. You accepted his offering by raising him from death, and granting him great honor at your right hand on high. Amen, Jesus is Lord. This is the feast of victory. The Lamb who was slain has begun his reign. Alleluia! Lord, you taught us to hope for salvation, the joy of every longing heart. As our Savior taught us, we are bold to sing: Lord s Prayer and Break the Bread The breaks the consecrated Bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, for we all share one bread. The cup of blessing which we bless, is a sharing in the blood of Christ. Draw near with faith and receive. Christ is the host and we are his guests. Christ is alive forever. We are because he is. 12

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Come, for all has been made ready. Fraction Anthem All Baptized Christians are invited to communion. Please extend both hands to receive the bread and assist the server by guiding the chalice to your lips. If you do not desire the cup, leave the bread in your hand. The server will dip it in the wine and return it to you. For those not receiving communion, you are welcome to come for a blessing by crossing your arms over your heart as you come before the priest. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. PRAYER MINISTRY: After receiving communion, Prayer Teams are available through the doors to the right of the altar. Communion Music The Post Communion Prayer (Kneel or Sit) Let us pray. & Almighty God, Eternal Father, we have sat at your feet, learned from your word and eaten from your table. We give you thanks and praise for accepting us into your family. Send us out with your blessing, to live and to witness for you in the power of your Spirit, through Jesus Christ the First Born from the dead. Amen. [FATHER, anoint our Visitation Communion Ministry. LORD JESUS, bless those who will receive your body and blood. HOLY SPIRIT, empower those who administer this sacrament. Amen.] The Blessing (Stand) All our problems, We send to the cross of Christ. All our difficulties, We send to the cross of Christ. All the devil s works, 13

We send to the cross of Christ. All our hopes, We set on the risen Christ. God the Holy Trinity make you strong in faith and love, defend you on every side, and guide you in truth and peace; and the blessing of God Almighty, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.
