The Society of the Atonement was founded on December 15, 1898 and Fr. Paul and Mother Lurana set about turning the howling wilderness into the Holy Mountain they knew it to be. From these humble beginnings came the many Atonement ministries and missions that continue to this day all envisioned to bring healing and reconciliation to the world. Today, as a distinct religious community within the Franciscan family, the Friars of the Atonement follow their founding charism of at-one-ment in simplicity, poverty and peacemaking. The Friars continuously work for Christian unity and interreligious understanding through the Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute in NYC, the Centro Pro Unione in Rome, and in service as Ecumenical Officers for dioceses in Canada and America. The Friars bring witness to Gospel values by living and working with the poor and marginalized throughout the world. Their pastoral ministries are located on three continents and serve parishes, hospitals, universities, prisons and more. Through the Union That Nothing Be Lost the Friars provide support to the underserved around the world. Their social service ministries serve the homeless, hungry, addicted and those stricken with HIV. The Spiritual Life Center provides a diverse schedule of retreats, workshops, recovery programs and gatherings at Graymoor for those in need of spiritual renewal. Today the Holy Mountain of Graymoor is home to an array of beautiful chapels and shrines. It s a wondrous place to watch nature unfold throughout the year, whether it s green leaves turning into autumn colors or snow melting into water, Graymoor abounds with divine life. The Friars are happy to share these scenes of Graymoor with you.
