WORD OF THE LORD SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase Sunday best has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it s a healthy sign that we re as casual in a re gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No ma er which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chas se us. True, James cri cizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he cri cizes the making of dis nc ons, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our a en on to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gen le man in a region hos le to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Dewane, Bishop of Venice, Chairman of the Commi ee on Domes c Jus ce and Human Development, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: September 3, 2018 The plight of our brothers and sisters who work hard but struggle to make ends meet calls us all to reflect in a special way this Labor Day. Recent economic news and data report that poverty con nues to decline, unemployment is down to one of the lowest levels in decades and there has been economic growth with produc on, stocks and profits rising to record levels. But is this the whole story? Every worker has a right to a just wage according to the criterion of jus ce, which St. John XXIII described as wages that, "give the worker and his family a standard of living in keeping with the dignity of the human person." St. John Paul II elaborated on the systema c implica ons of just wages, describing them as "the concrete means of verifying the jus ce of the whole socioeconomic system." However, when a society fails in the task of ensuring workers are paid justly, ques ons arise as to the underlying assump ons of that system. A society that is willing to exclude its most vulnerable members, Pope Francis suggests in Evangelii Gaudium, is one where "the socioeconomic system is unjust at its root." Pope Francis warns that absent a just response, these dispari es can lead to deep societal divisions and even violence. The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of par cipa ng in God's crea on. A just wage not only provides for workers' financial well-being, but fosters their social, cultural and spiritual dimensions as individuals and members of society. This is the essence of what the Church refers to when speaking of integral human development. This Labor Day, let us all commit ourselves to personal conversion of heart and mind and stand in solidarity with workers by advoca ng for just wages, and in so doing, "bring glad dings to the poor."
