The Pentecostals of Sydney 21 Days of Prayer & Fasting 5 February 25 February 2018

BIBLICAL ANSWERS ON FASTING Fasting is one of the most powerful and rewarding spiritual disciplines we have at our disposal. What is Fasting? Biblical fasting is giving up specific foods and drink for a specified length of time. The type and length of the fast you choose is between you and God. Every February and September, the church family at the Pentecostals of Sydney enter a 21 day corporate fast. A Corporate fast is a joint fast of believers for a specific purpose that can yield powerful results. Although this fast involves others, it is also very much a private and personal experience. Esther called all of her people to fast for protection against danger (Esther 4:16). Samuel declared a fast for national revival (1 Samuel 7). Fasting, prayer and reading God s Word go hand in hand. When you fast, pray for God s purpose and plan for your life to be revealed. Fasting and praying about every major decision in your life is very important. Fasting is a way to conquer your physical man and open the door to the supernatural in your life. When you deny your body, you feed your spirit and grow closer to the Lord. Why Fast? In Matthew 6, Jesus gave us specific direction on how to live as a child of God. That pattern addressed three specific duties of a Christian: Giving, Praying and Fasting. Jesus said, When you give, when you pray, when you fast. He made it clear that fasting, like giving and praying, was a normal part of Christian life. When all three disciplines giving, praying and fasting, are at work in a person s life, the power of God is released. How Do I Fast? Before beginning a fast, make a plan and a verbal commitment to the Lord. When you approach it with determination, you ll be less likely to waiver in weak moments. 2

If you do find it to be a battle, don t lose heart. God knows our weaknesses. His fasting principles allow us the flexibility to take care of our job and duties while still making a sacrifice to honour Him. There are a many different types of fasts. Find the fast or combination of fasts that suits your needs. For example, as we enter this 21 day fast, you may want to begin with a full fast for 1-3 days and then continue with a Daniel Fast or some other type of partial fast for the remainder of the 21 days. No matter which fast you decide on, you must remember that if you take medication or have a medical condition, consult your doctor prior to starting and drink lots of water. Types of Fasts Full fast. Drink only liquids especially water. On this type of fast you may also take in clear broth and 100 percent fruit or vegetable juices in order to maintain your strength. You establish the number of days for your fast in your prayer time. Be sure to consult your doctor. Partial Fast. There are many options for partial fasts. Below are just a few: Daniel fast: This type of fast is found in Daniel 10. The Daniel Fast is abstaining from meats, sweets, breads and any drink, except water, for a specific time period (Daniel 10:2-3). The easiest way to think of this fast is you should eat vegetables, whole grains, fruits and drink only water. Be sure to consult your doctor, especially if you have any medical condition. The following are examples of other types of partial fasts. But remember, the type of fast you select is what you and the Lord agree upon. - Give up one item of food or drink such as caffeine, coffee, soft drinks or sweets or give up one meal per day. - Fast for a specific number of days... one day, three days, etc. - Choose to fast between certain hours or from sun up to sundown. When doing this type of fast, consider your work and sleep schedule. The hours that you sleep should not be considered part of your fasting period, so the time frame for this type of fast may vary. 3

Frequently Asked Questions about Fasting: Can I have salt, pepper, seasonings, vitamins or whole grains? Fasting is a private discipline. It is not something that is meant to be unattainable. Decide what is feasible for you and do your best. Can Children Fast? The best way to show your children the power of fasting is to lead by example. If they want to participate in fasting or if you want to have a family fast, consider giving up desserts or soft drinks. In addition to giving up an item of food, you could also give up social media or visual entertainment as a family and spend that time reading and discussing Bible stories. What if I have a medical condition? Consult your doctor before starting any fast. Decide together what is possible. If your health condition prohibits you from fasting food, try fasting something else and concentrate on prayer and Bible study. What if I start and can t finish out the fast...have I fasted for nothing? Seeking God through prayer and fasting is never a waste of time. When you make the effort, God takes notice. Just determine within your heart that you will make an even better effort next time. Or try finishing up with a partial fast. I forgot and ate something that wasn t on my fast...do I need to start again? No, think of fasting as a marathon, rather than a sprint. Don t give up! If you fall down, get up and keep trying. Conquering your flesh is difficult, but with the help of God s Spirit, you will be victorious. Do I continue to exercise whilst fasting? Moderate exercise is good. But it is best to always consult a doctor about fasting and exercise. If you are on a complete fast, you may not have the energy for a high level of exercise. What if I have a manual labour job? If you have a job that requires you to expend a lot of physical energy, you may want to consider a partial fast that allows you to receive enough nutrition to perform your job. Can my husband and I be intimate during our fast? 4

Read I Corinthians 7:2-5, especially verse 5, which says do not deprive one another (of sexual relations) except with consent, for a time... that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer. So the answer is yes. Scripture allows this for the purpose of fasting and prayer, but only with mutual consent. Wherever you are in life or whatever your needs today, fasting can benefit you. If you are struggling with your health or finances, fasting is a powerful spiritual tool. Fasting is a private discipline with public rewards. It is the spiritual key in certain seasons and situations of your life. Whatever your season in life, release the power of fasting into your needs. Fasting for your family Fasting gives you the opportunity to pray and intercede specifically for your family. It s important to fast and pray for your children s and grandchildren s future. God is looking for men and women with fervent prayer lives who will do spiritual battle on behalf of their families! Fasting will open your eyes to the needs of your family. The Lord will point out the needs of your family members from deep within your heart and soul, such as encouragement for your spouse or special prayer and attention for a child. You can fast and pray specifically for a protective covering of safety around your family. Scripture tells how Esther s people were in danger. Before she approached the king, Esther declared a three-day fast for God s protection (Esther 4:16). Fasting for financial needs If you face a financial struggle that seems insurmountable, you are not alone. Ezra faced a big problem with the silver and gold he was responsible for in Ezra 7 and 8. He had been given silver and gold from King Artaxerxes to return to Jerusalem, but thieves threatened his financial security. Maybe you feel like thieves have stolen what belongs to you financially. When Ezra faced an uncertain financial journey, he declared a fast (Ezra 8:21) and God answered his prayer! If you will fast, pray and obey God s commandments, He said you will be blessed (Deut. 28:2). 5

The widow in 1 Kings 17:10-16 also faced an uncertain future. Although the woman had very little, she gave up her own food to help Elijah, the man of God. The book of Isaiah says we are called,... to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out... (Isaiah 58:6-7). Fasting for deliverance In Mark 9, Christ s disciples were frustrated because they could not cast out an evil spirit. Jesus said, This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting (Mark 9:29). If you are afflicted with addictions or sin, you can go on a fast that frees you from besetting sins as referred to in Hebrews 12:1. Besetting sins are those that ensnare us and hinder us from achieving God s purpose for our lives. Through fasting we can break free from the addictions and habits that are not pleasing to God. Is this not the fast that I have chosen; To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke? (Isaiah 58:6). Christ said the key to deliverance from sin is fasting and prayer. Maybe you struggle with the emotional bondage of depression or anxiety. Elijah also battled negative emotional feelings. When Jezebel sent word that she wanted to kill Elijah, he became distraught (1 Kings 19:4). He was depressed and even suicidal. That s when an angel came to Elijah and instructed him to journey back into the presence of God. The Bible says that Elijah fasted for 40 days and 40 nights as he returned to Horeb, the mountain of God. God delivered Elijah from feelings of suicide and fear. He gave Him hope, courage and direction. Fasting for guidance Are you faced with a major life decision and don t know what to do? Maybe you have a job opportunity... a broken relationship... or an unfulfilled dream. Fasting can help you clear away the clutter of life and discern God s voice. Saul was going the wrong direction in life. He was hunting down followers of Christ and persecuting them when the light of God s truth stopped him (Acts 9:3-6). Saul headed to Damascus and was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank (Acts 9:9). He didn t know what to do, but he fasted for God s divine direction. Then God sent the disciple Ananias to him with guidance (Acts 9:17). Through this process 6

Saul became Paul, one of God s chosen apostles. Through his fast, Paul received the direction he needed and so can you. When you don t know what to do or when you face a major decision, that s when you need to fast and pray fervently for God s direction. Fasting for health and healing The Bible gives us a perfect example of how denying ourselves physically can bring good health. It is the story of Daniel and his peers in Daniel 1. The Daniel Fast is a fast from meats, sweets, breads and any drink but water for 21 days (Daniel 1:12; 10:2-3). This fast is a partial and a prolonged fast that yields health and healing. Daniel and three others refused to eat the king s meat and they appeared better and fatter in flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the king s delicacies (Daniel 1:15). Daniel and his men were healthier! If you have a physical problem, fast for healing. According to Isaiah 58 when you fast,... your health will spring forth speedily. Fasting for our nation When Samuel took over as priest and judge over the nation, he declared a fast for national revival. Samuel told the people to fast and seek God to return His presence to the nation (1 Samuel 7:3). Our society today more than anything else needs believers who will fast and pray for revival. If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14). We can return God s presence and glory to our personal lives and our nations. Will you do your part? Fast, pray and seek the Lord. Fasting for the lost John the Baptist and his disciples fasted often, according to Matthew 9. He was on the Nazarite diet, which abstained from drinking alcohol. He ate locusts and wild honey (Matthew 3:1-4). Because of John the Baptist s constant fasting, I believe he had a greater testimony and influence on the lives of people in his generation than any other man (Matthew 11:1, John 1:6-7). If you and I want to win the lost in our communities, in our nation and around the world, we must do spiritual warfare through fasting and prayer. When you deny yourself and focus on God s will through prayer, He will begin to open doors of evangelism in your life. 7

Day 1: CONSECRATION Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.... Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up (James 4:8,10). Prayer focus: Today we start our 21 days of consecration to God. We begin by acknowledging that we need God and can do nothing without Him. Ask God to create in you a clean heart and renew a right, persevering and steadfast spirit. Allow God to search you and reveal to you anything that is standing between you and Him. Ask God to reveal your motives for fasting to ensure you enter this fast with a pure heart. Day 2: SPIRITUAL HUNGER Psalm 63:1, O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is. Prayer Focus: Enter into this fast with expectancy and faith and a hunger for God and the supernatural. Express your hunger and desire for more of Him in prayer. Day 3: DEVOTION Psalm 63:6, When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches. Deuteronomy 6:5, And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. Prayer Focus: Spend time each day meditating on the Lord and His goodness. Ask God to strengthen your walk with Him. Ask God to reignite passion in your heart for Him and His word. Day 4: RELEASE OF APOSTOLIC AUTHORITY Mark 16:17-18, 20, And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Prayer Focus: As a body of believers, we desire to experience all that the Apostles experienced in their time and even more. Pray for holy 8

boldness and that every born again believer at the Pentecostals of Sydney will receive this empowerment and step out in faith. Day 5: MIRACLES, SIGNS, WONDERS & OPERATION OF THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT Mark 11:24, Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Prayer Focus: Pray that God will give you compassion and a spirit of humility so that He is able to work through you. Pray that God will increase your faith to give you boldness to step out and pray the prayer of faith to see signs, miracles and wonders manifest through your life. Covet earnestly the gift of the Spirit you believe God desires to use you in. Pray that God will give you the opportunity to exercise that gift. Pray that during every service God will use members within the body in the operation of the Gifts of the Spirit. Day 6: FREEDOM FROM ADDICTIONS, STRONGHOLDS, BONDAGES, FEAR, OPPRESSION & DEPRESSION 2 Cor. 10:3-4, For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Prayer Focus: Ask God to release His anointing in you and the POS body of believers that will destroy every form of addiction, stronghold, bondage, fear, oppression and depression. Day 7: HEALING For I will restore health to you, And heal you of your wounds, says the LORD (Jeremiah 30:17). Prayer Focus: Pray for those that you know need a physical or spiritual healing in their life. Pray for a blessing of health and longevity for our POS family. Pray for those who need healing of emotional scars and wounds. Pray for healing for relationships in families and within our church family. Day 8: HOLY SPIRIT OUTPOURING Acts 2:1-2, And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 9

Prayer Focus: Pray that there will be a powerful outpouring of the Spirit of God not only on those seeking to receive the Holy Spirit for the first time but also on all believers. Pray we will receive a mighty touch of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Pray that the Lord will pour out His Spirit all over this city of Sydney. Day 9: UNITY IN THE CHURCH Galatians 3:26-28, For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Prayer Focus: Pray that the body of Christ will be perfectly joined together in one mind and one accord with no division among us. Ask God to give us the mind of Christ that we may have the thoughts and purposes of His heart during our fast. Pray that God will break down any walls of discord or offense and renew relationships and fellowships. Day 10: FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT Gal 5:22-23, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Prayer Focus: Meditate on the eight fruit of the Spirit and ask God to work in you the fruit that you know you don t have much of or the ones that you struggle with. Ask God to help you bear good fruit for the benefit of others to partake of. Day 11: TO BE FILLED WITH POWER & PURPOSE Romans 12:1-2, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Prayer Focus: Pray that God will reveal to you His purpose and plan of what He desires to do in you during this specific time of prayer and fasting. Be open to what the Lord reveals to you. Write it down and refer to it during your times of prayer. Day 12: SPIRITUAL LEADERS (POS) 10

Colossians 1:9, For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Prayer Focus: Ask God to lead our pastors and leaders as they minister with wisdom, boldness, discernment and compassion. Pray for their health and strength. Pray a hedge of protection over them and their family members. Pray for the prophetic anointing to operate and flow freely through them. Ask God to work through them via the gifts of the Spirit. Day 13: POS MINISTRIES, DAUGHTER WORK & SURROUNDING COMMUNITY 2 Chron. 7:14, If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Prayer Focus: Ask God to continue to develop our ministries to connect with our community. Pray that we will be a city on a hill and a place of refuge for those who are lost, hurting and without hope. Pray that the Lord will strengthen the leaders of our daughter work and that He will grant them wisdom and favour with man in the community they are reaching. Pray that the Spirit of God will draw men and women to where services are held. Day 14: PERSONAL SUCCESS, DIRECTION, PURPOSE Ephesians 3:17-20, That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us. Prayer Focus: Pray that God will give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you seek out His will, purpose and direction for your life. Pray that you will not be weary in seeking Him even in struggles and adversity. Ask God to sustain the knowledge and revelation you have received and to give you strength to carry out His vision. Day 15: FINANCE/ECONOMY/BUSINESS 11

Malachi 3:10-11, Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts. Prayer Focus: Pray that the Lord will bless our businesses, economy and finances. Pray that God will give wisdom to businessmen/women to make sound financial decisions. Ask God to release His good treasure and bless the works of our hands and give us favour with man so that we may, in turn, bless the work of His Kingdom through giving. Day 16: SINGLES, YOUNG ADULTS, YOUTH & CHILDREN 1 Timothy 4:12, Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Prayer Focus: Ask God to keep His guiding hand on young adults as they navigate through the season of great transition. Pray that God will guide our singles, single parents, widowed and divorced families with His guiding light and gentle hand. Pray that God will remove a spirit of loneliness and re-new strength and comfort to those in hurting or dissolved relationships. Ask God to loose His angels into our homes, schools, school buses, playgrounds, daycares and universities. Pray that God will watch over and protect our youth and children. Day 17: FAMILIES Ephesians 5:22, 25, Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Prayer Focus: Pray that God would bless our families and that we will have families through which God can work. Ask God to keep a hedge of protection around our families and to provide all of our needs. Day 18: BACKSLIDERS/PRODIGALS If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I 12

hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land (II Chronicles 7:14). Prayer Focus: Pray today that God will draw any POS members who have walked way from the Lord back to Him. Bind the spirit of error, hurt or offense and loose understanding and repentance in their lives. Day 19: EVANGELISM & DISCIPLESHIP And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature (Mark 16:15). Prayer Focus: Evangelism and discipleship of others is vital for the future of the Pentecostals of Sydney. Pray for passionate teaching, preaching and spreading of the Gospel in every department of the church. Pray that God will give you compassion and a love for the lost and for your brothers and sisters in Christ. Day 20: WORSHIP But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him (John 4:23). Prayer Focus: Worship is an essential part of our Christian walk. Understand that in His presence is fullness of joy. Offer yourself to the Lord in worship. Not just today but as a commitment from this day forward. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Day 21: THANKSGIVING Psalm 95:2, Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. Psalm 103:1, Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Prayer Focus: Do not petition or ask God for anything today. This is a day dedicated to giving Him thanks for hearing and answering our prayers. Rejoice in the goodness of the Lord! 13
