Brethren, Message From The Master The Hawaiian Shirt / Bring a Friend Night at our May Stated Meeting was a great success. Everyone seemed to have fun and enjoyed themselves showing off their favorite and brightest colors. Even a couple of faux Hawaiian Shirts in Maroon and Orange with the abbreviation for the State of Vermont were seen. (Isn t that what the VT plastered all over the shirts stood for?). In addition to the shirts, colorful Hawaiian leis were in abundance along with several other festive items including a grass skirt, which was not worn in spite of a lot of coaxing. Chickahominy Lodge No. 286 A.F. & A. M. Chartered February 16, 1905 Trestleboard June, 2014 We had six guests come for Bring a Friend Night, a couple of which seemed interested in becoming Masons. Worshipful George Hollingsworth gave a presentation on Freemasonry in the 21 st Century. If you brought a friend that night, please follow up with them to see if they have any questions. It would be great if we were to receive Petitions from some of them. Two new candidates for the Degrees in Freemasonry were elected. After their Initiations, we will have three candidates learning various stages of their catechisms. Also, Brother Art Latimer was elected for membership in our Lodge. Congratulations and a big welcome to Brother Art. This will bring our membership to a total of eighty three. As you know, we sponsor the Reds which is one of the teams in the 9-10, year old class of the Majors of the Williamsburg Youth Baseball League. On May 20 th ten Lodge members plus their wives/guests went to their game. Following the game, twenty of us went to Oceans and Ale Restaurant for a great dinner and beverages. We all had a wonderful time. It was great to have such a large number of us get together for conversation and good times. What was not so great was being presented with a bill for over $550. Nice try guys. Better luck with next year s Master! P.O. Box 464 7886 Richmond Road Toano, VA 23168 Stated Communication: 2 nd Tuesday, 7:30 P.M. www.chickahominy286.org Speaking of the Reds, I just received word that they finished their regular season at 10-5-1 and are LEAGUE CAMPIONS. Considering the fact that we have sponsored a team for the last three years who have all been champions, the heat is now on Brother Bo Bohannon to continue that tradition next year. Sorry Brother Bo, but Worshipfuls Steve and Wayne started this competition at last month s meeting! (Continued next page) Page 1 of 6
Message From The Master cont d On May 15 th Chickahominy Roadrunners travelled to Donovan Lodge No. 75 in Deltaville. While it was only four of us this time, we still had a great time and were welcomed with wide open arms. We had some of the best fried chicken I ve tasted in quite some time and it kept on coming. This was topped off with strawberry shortcake. If nothing else, Masons sure do know how to eat. I think it s called eat and meet. Our next trip is scheduled for June 27 th to Norview Lodge No. 113 in Norfolk. Brethren, the list of our LMIP s is growing with the addition of another member this month. As of now we have 31 LMIP s. That s 39% of our current Master Masons. That is an accomplishment in itself and something we should all be proud of. If you are not yet included in this group, please consider becoming an LMIP. Now is the perfect opportunity. Dues will be increasing to $86 for 2015. That means that if you become an LMIP this year, it would cost you $1,264 (16 X $79). If you wait until next year, it will cost you $1,462 (16 x $86 plus $86 for 2015 dues) or an increase of $198. Saving money is great but even more important is the fact that as a Life Member in Perpetuity, the Grand Lodge will continue to pay your portion of Lodge dues to your Lodge forever. This is a great legacy and in effect an annuity to our Lodge. You can now sign up and pay on-line by credit card. You can even pay in installments. Please contact our Secretary, Brother Gary Grubb for more information or get an application from him at our next meeting. Prior to opening our June meeting we will be presenting at least one Eagle Scout award. We will also be presenting a Fifty-Year Veteran s Award to Worshipful Murray T. Rowe, Jr. Please come out and join us in recognizing these great achievements. Finally Brethren, on May 1 st we mailed a second notice to those who have not yet paid their 2014 dues. As of this date we still have 6 members who have not paid, one of which told me we should receive his payment within the week. I will be contacting each of the 5 remaining members to determine if there is some sort of problem. Brethren, this process costs your Lodge extra money and creates more work for your Officers. Please get your check in the mail as soon as possible. I hate to have to keep harping on this but I would rather not turn over any delinquencies to next year s Master. SPECIAL NOTICES & ANNOUNCEMENTS Lodge Shirts may be worn for the June, July and August Stated Meetings. Jackets and Ties will not be required. The Stated Dinner sign-up sheet still has a couple of blank spaces. Right now we are in need for volunteers for our July and December diners. Please consider signing up. Remember, the Lodge will reimburse you for your out of pocket expenses. It s your cooking talent we re looking for! Please contact Wor. Steve Anderson if you have questions. Most Worshipful Wayne Flora, Grand Master of Masons in Virginia, has issued a Proclamation declaring the first day of each month Masonic Recognition Day. This recognition should take the form of wearing Masonic apparel such as hats, shirts, jackets, belts, etc. Each Mason is further encouraged to hold every day as Masonic Recognition Day by studying a portion of the Methodical Digest, Presentation Volume, other Masonic books or pamphlets, and the volume of Sacred Law, as well as hold discussions with well-informed Brethren. Most Worshipful Flora has also issued a Proclamation directing each Lodge to observe the Feast of St. John the Baptist in June. On June 21 st Williamsburg Lodge No. 6 will be conducting a special event celebrating this feast starting with the opening of an EA Lodge at 11:00 a.m. which will be followed by a Procession to Bruton Parish for a special reading. Worshipful Joe Rose strongly encourages our members to join in on this celebration. If you are interested in attending, please contact Worshipful Joe Rose for more information. The shed portion of the Lodge roof has been painted and the leaks seem to have stopped. A new screen door has now been installed at the kitchen entrance. Brothers Greg Johnson and Jack van Leliveld have donated a new door and hardware for the outer door to the Tiler s room. Brother Greg is in the process of finishing and installing it. A special thank you to both of you. Special thanks to Brother Bruce Burkett for the work he is doing keeping the grounds maintained and replacing and maintaining the flower pots out front. Great job Brother Bruce! Page 4 of 6
