Thursday, March 28 th, 2013 Maundy Thursday Liturgy THE GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY Prelude: (From the back) Celebrant: This is the day that Christ the Lamb of God gave himself into the hands of those who would slay him. This is the day that Christ gathered his disciples in the upper room. This is the day that Christ took a towel and washed the disciples feet, giving us an example that we should do to others as he has done to us. This is the day that Christ our God gave us this holy feast, that we who eat this bread and drink this cup may proclaim his Holy Sacrifice and be partakers of his resurrection, and at the last day may reign with him in heaven. THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD First Reading: Exodus 12:1-14 Jacqueline Marée Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Response: Thanks be to God Psalm: 116:1,10-17 Processional Hymn: Great God, Your Love... 442 (v. 1,2) Collect of the Day O God, your Son Jesus Christ has left to us this meal of bread and wine in which we share his body and his blood. May we, who celebrate this sign of his great love, show in our lives the fruits of his redemption; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

People: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Gradual Hymn: Great God, Your Love... 442 (v. 5) Homily Mother Susan THE SERVICE OF FOOT-WASHING Celebrant: Fellow servants of our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night before his death, Jesus set an example for his disciples by washing their feet, an act of humble service. He taught that strength and growth in the life of the Kingdom of God come not by power, authority, or even miracle, but by such lowly service. Therefore, I invite you who share in the royal priesthood of Christ, to come forward, that I may recall whose servant I am by following the example of my Master. But come remembering his admonition that what will be done for you is also to be done by you to others, for a servant is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. The volunteers come forward to have their feet washed. Hymns during Foot-washing: The King of Love... 520 Ubi Caritas 553 Anthem: Of Thy Mystical Supper Paul Stetsenko (1962-) Antiphons for the washing of the feet The Prayers of the People Response: As announced Confession and Absolution Bonny Hietala Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; welcoming sinners and inviting them to this table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. People: Amen. THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Offertory Hymn: I Come With Joy 60 Prayer over the Gifts: God of compassion, we spread this table to remember the loving sacrifice of Jesus Christ, your Son. Accept all we offer you this day. Bind us together in his love and in the love he has commanded us to bring one another; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Supplementary Eucharistic Prayer 1 Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Celebrant: Holy God, Lover of creation, we give you thanks and praise for in the ocean of your steadfast love you bear us and place the song of your Spirit in our hearts. When we turn from your love and defile the earth, you do not abandon us. Your Spirit speaks through Huldah and Micah, through prophets, sages, and saints in every age, to confront our sin and reveal the vision of your new creation. Joining in the song of the universe we proclaim your glory singing: All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Celebrant: Gracious God, in the fullness of time you sent Jesus the Christ to share our fragile humanity. Through Jesus life, death, and resurrection you open the path from brokenness to health, from fear to trust, from pride and conceit to reverence for you. Rejected by a world that could not bear the Gospel of life, Jesus knew death was near. His head anointed for burial by an unknown woman, Jesus gathered together those who loved him. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it and gave it to his friends, saying, Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, gave you thanks, and said Drink this all of you, this is my blood of the new covenant
which is shed for you and for many. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. And now we gather at this table in response to his commandment, to share the bread and cup of Christ s undying love, and to proclaim our faith. All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Celebrant: Breathe your Holy Spirit, the wisdom of the universe, upon these gifts that we bring to you: this bread, this cup, ourselves, our souls and bodies, that we may be signs of your love for all the world and ministers of your transforming purpose. Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, Creator of all, and we bless your holy name for ever. People: Amen. The Lord s Prayer 211 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Presider: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. All: Therefore, let us keep the feast. Presider: The gifts of God for the People of God. People: Thanks be to God. The Communion Communion Hymns: Ah, Holy Jesus 196 We Hold the Death... 68 Prayer after Communion (please kneel) Celebrant: Holy God, source of all love, on the night of his betrayal Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment to love one another as he loved them. Write this commandment in our hearts; give us the will to serve others as he was the servant of all, who gave his life and died for us, yet is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE PROCESSION TO THE ALTAR OF REPOSE (all remain kneeling) Hymn in Procession: Now, My Tongue... 51 The sacrament is carried to the Altar of Repose, symbolizing the Garden of Gethsemane where we watch
and pray with Jesus on the night he was betrayed and handed over to be tried and crucified. THE STRIPPING OF THE ALTAR Anthem: Christus Factus Est Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) Hymn: Go to Dark Gethsemane 190 The altar is stripped, symbolizing Jesus being stripped before being crucified, and the washing symbolizes his preparation for burial. This is a solemn moment. We leave the darkened church in silence and in disarray, reminding us that the disciples scattered after Jesus was arrested. The church is open until midnight for prayer and vigil.
