The Challenger The true meaning of love Christ died for us. John 3:16 FBC FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, HARRISON JULY, 2018 VOL. 63 NO. 7 Sunday, July 1st Special Guests: Dan and Donna Oxley from Nashville, Tennessee Dan Oxley is the son of missionary parents, was born and raised in Japan. It was there that he began to learn to play the trumpet when he was 8 years old from a Japanese music teacher who lived next door. His experiences living in a country with so few Christians gave him the passion early in life to use his talent in sharing the gospel. He literally grew up playing his trumpet on the street corners of Japan. Dan attended school at the Christian Academy of Japan, came to the United States and graduated from Wheaton Central High School in Chicago. Attended Grace College in Indiana. Then left college to travel with the contemporary Christian group, Truth. While traveling with Truth, Dan met singer Donna Carter, whom he married in 1979. Over the years, Dan and Donna have toured extensively across America performing at festivals, churches, conventions and colleges. Dan has traveled to Russia, Japan, China, South Korea, and North Korea. As a studio musician and producer, Dan has backed up numerous artists in both the secular and Christian music fields. His solo albums include.. a Christmas album, The Hymns Project, A New Day and Dan Oxley Praise Band. What are the takeaways from his story...for us? THE.ROB.BLOG This is Random Tho t Day No, it s not a revered national holiday like, say, National Doughnut Day. It s the special day when I have a writing deadline and am struggling to choose the topic. Therefore, all of these thoughts bouncing around in my mind saying Pick me! Pick me! all in luck. I sort of feel like Oprah: YOUR RE in the article! YOUR RE in the article! So, line up, musings. Here we go! The Southern Baptist Convention just elected its youngest president ever. J.D. Greear is in his late 40 s. (Whippersnapper!) The SBC has made great strides over the last decade or so to become inclusive and reflective of our total fabric. That s a good thing. Heaven will not be one flavor. Our denomination (and leadership) shouldn t be either. I turn 65 in a few days but I can t relate to that age. In my mind I am still in my 40 s. (Whippersnapper!) Funny how the mind plays tricks on you like that. I know I should act my age but I m not sure what that looks like. So, until I get clarification on this I ll just pretend I m the younger me. Even at this age I m still amazed at people who should know better but don t. How can you go to Sunday School, Bible studies, and sit under preaching and STILL be so negative. Yikes! I think that may be the greatest barrier to people believing the Gospel. We say it is life changing. Some people wonder: If that s true, Good Lord, how negative WERE you BEFORE you got saved?!? Hey! Monitor your talk people! You re making lost people look attractive in comparison. I doubt seriously your spiritual chip on your shoulder gift is actually in the Bible. If I wasn t saved and was sent to Hell and there was no Hell-fire, my eternal torment would be to have to cut wood with a chain saw that started every time but whose chain jumped off the bar after the start of every cut. Trivia: this is where the expression enough to make a preacher cuss originated. I do so love FBCH! I realize how blessed I am. You may not realize how blessed you are. No, not by having me as pastor but in the great church you are. We have incredible worship every Sunday. We have awesome teachers in every age group. Your staff is committed and each one is a great servant leader. We are reaching all ages. Let me say it again: I m a blessed man. Grandchildren are the best! That s all that needs to be said on that topic. I just have a feeling God is about to do a new thing in our midst. I have no clue what that might be. I do know that Satan has been trying to worm his way into our family. There have been too many goofy things happening lately. However, your deacons have been really good sheepdogs and have protected the flock by their compassion and confrontation. Those guys are really the best. Young men and older: serving God in a consistent way. Your I m feeling less mentally cluttered pastor, Rob Adventure Club/Slam Senior Adult Luncheon The fourth Tuesday in July July 24th Join us in July...we will serve you a wonderful lunch and you will have a great time of fellowship with the kids. What are the takeaways from his story...for us? The A/V Communications Committee of First Baptist Church has announced that the website of the church has been updated with new features and new procedures to keep the site current. The website was designed for four purposes To be a virtual front door to our visitors To communicate information to our members in a timely manner To be a resource for members of FBC Harrison To be an evangelical tool On the home page, you will find a link to the video answers to life s hard questions from TrueLife.org, a unique non-profit Christian organization dedicated to showing the world that the Bible is true and reliable. New to the home page are the daily calendars for the church and the Recreation Ministry along with some of the upcoming events highlighted This should give you a quick glance as to what is happening and when the ROC is available. The About page is loaded with information for both visitors and members. Follow the links to find the most recent addition of the Challenger for you to read or download. Forms used by the church will be available here for download. In the process of updating the website, a procedure has been developed to keep the content of the site current. Once an event is approved and placed on the church calendar, it is automatically scheduled to be posted on the website. It will also be scheduled to be posted on the church s facebook page and announced on the Weekly Update and the Sunday Bulletin. The Events Section is where to find these postings. Some of the postings will also be featured on the Upcoming Events on the home page In the Sermons section, you will find the video of the most recent sermon posted along with links to previous sermons. With each sermon posted you have the option to listen on line, download the audio or to watch. The site is still a platform for the live streaming of the Sunday Bridge service and a platform for online giving. Another new feature of the website in the Get involved page is the invite. Here you will be provided electronic cards that you can take a moment to send to your friends, neighbors or relatives. More information on the ecards and how to use them will be coming to you. The site is automatically configured for use with pc s, tablets and smart phones. The Committee is working on an app and hopes to have it available soon. These are the highlights of the updated website. There are other features that have not been mentioned here. If you have any comments are suggestions, we would love to have your input. The A/V Communications Committee is responsible for the sound, lighting, projections and video production along with the website and electronic communications. There are numerous opportunities to serve. If you would like to be involved, contact the office of audiovisual@fbcharrison.org

During my spring break I went to Guatemala with an internal medicine doctor (Dr. James Weedman), his wife, and four of my medical school classmates. We set up medical clinics and held worship services in different locations throughout the mountains of Guatemala. We provided medical support to the Todos Santos tribe. These people are an indigenous tribe that live in the mountains of Guatemala. The Weedmans started their ministry with the Todos Santos people around 12 years ago. They were long term missionaries in HueHue but have since decided to take groups 3-4 times a year to HueHue, one of which is a group of UAMS students. Each person that came through the clinic saw Dr. Weedman and a UAMS student, then stopped at the glasses station, got any medicine that Dr. Weedman prescribed at the pharmacy, went through the prayer station where a student and local Todos Santos women would pray over them, and finally would go through an evangelism station. Every person, if they were willing, heard a presentation of the gospel. After our clinics, we would host a worship service. Each student had the opportunity to share a Bible story and their testimonies. We sang worship songs in English, Spanish, and the Todos Santos native language Mam. There were frustrations with the language barrier and having to use interpreters, but language is not a barrier for God and through Him working in the hearts of these kind people, 78 people accepted Christ as their Savior and will be citizens of heaven. Through your support I was able to serve these people and witness the Lord s incredible power on this trip. Thank you so much for your support. In His Love, Katie Stahler Congratulations to: Jean Lowe on the birth of her grandson Robert Alan Rhine Lowe Born: June 21st 9 lbs. 2 ozs. (Parents: Steve & Misty Lowe)
