Parashah Vayak'hel He gathered & Pekudei - Week 22 THE GARDEN OF EDEN AND TABERNACLE ARE BOTH PLACES WHERE GOD CHOOSES TO DWELL This week s portion comes from Exodus 35:1-40; 38; 1 Kings 7:40-8.21; and Revelations 11:1-13, 15:5 SUMMARY This portion covers the end of the Book of Exodus: it explains how the Tabernacle is to be made, exactly what the process of sanctification consists of, the dressing of the priests for their role as Priest, and the erection of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) for the first time. We end off with the visible evidence that the Presence of GOD (YHVH) had returned to this earth after the Garden of Eden episode. 2

It s interesting to read the amount / or volume of Scripture that is dedicated to describing exactly how the Mishkan is built. If we think about this fact, and compare the time taken to describe the building of the Tabernacle, in relation to the story of the entire creation of the universe, then it s obvious to all, that it s far more difficult for mankind to make a home for GOD (YHVH) than it is for GOD (YHVH) to create the world. Our own ego, and pride will very easily get in the way. Our OLD Man will often want to rule/control, which means that our attitude towards creating a place for GOD (YHVH) to stay, will also be warped. Is this also not the problem with our own heart? When our old self is too important, then we will not be ready to circumcise our soul/mind/heart and consequently the Holy Spirit will not be welcome to live within us. For that reason, it s vital for us to understand, to look and see exactly how big the Tabernacle really is. You see, if you think the physical Tabernacle is a huge undertaking, you may be discouraged from trying to get going. IT S SMALL A cubit is taken to be about 17.5-20.5 inches. This distance is based on the measurement of the arm, from the elbow to the fingertips. If there are 20 boards, of 1.5 cubits at say 20 inches, then the long sides equaled 50 foot = 15.2 meters If there are 8 boards of 1.5 cubits at say 20 inches, then the west and east side measured 20 foot = 6 meters To read this, go to: Exodus 36:21-30 When we look at the sheer size of the cathedrals, synagogue s, and churches that have been built all over the world, we are compelled to ask --- was all of this really for GOD (YHVH)? Or is there a part of the self/ego at play here? And if we think like this, about how big we must be, then maybe, just maybe, GOD (YHVH) looks at man s endeavors for the building a House for GOD (YHVH) as a repeat of the building of the Tower of Babel. 3

PROGRESSION OF THE DWELLING/INTIMACY A) The Garden of Eden We start off in the Garden of Eden, with a place that is dedicated to be the meeting place of GOD (YHVH) with man - (made by GOD) For a short while, Heaven was really on earth. And it s here that we come to understand the timing of GOD (YHVH) - in the cool of the day - in the midst of the Garden, that God s Presence is felt. This is Tabernacle language. Genesis 2:8,15 8 ADONAI, God, planted a garden toward the east, in Eden, and there He put the person whom He had formed. 15 ADONAI, God, took the person and put him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and care for it. Genesis 3:8 They heard the Voice of ADONAI, God, walking in the Garden at the time of the evening breeze, so the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of ADONAI, God, among the trees in the Garden. It s also important that we try to imagine the Garden of Eden and the surrounding area, in the form of a Tabernacle. Consider this picture: The Garden of Eden is a picture of the Holy of Holies (the place where the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge grew. Compare this to the Tabernacle where we find the ARK and the mercy seat and consider these as a picture of the tree of life.) 4

Ezekiel seems to think that the Garden was also the Holy Mountain: Ezekiel 28:13-14 You were in Eden, the Garden of God; covered with all kinds of precious stones carnelians, topaz, diamonds, beryl, onyx, jasper, sapphires, green feldspar, emeralds; your pendants and jewels were made of gold, prepared the day you were created. 14 You were a keruv, protecting a large region; I placed you on God s holy mountain. You walked back and forth among stones of fire. The Garden of Eden is equivalent to the Holy of Holies. The bigger Garden is the Holy Place (Where the entrance was - and which was later guarded by the two Cherubim, Genesis 3:22-24). And the rest of the world (land of Nod) was the outer court (Consider the pattern - when Cain and Abel came to bring their offering (Genesis 4:3-8) they would have had to do this in the outer court (Genesis 4:16). Can you see the pattern of the Tabernacle in the Garden of Eden? Or stated differently, can you see the Garden of Eden inside the Tabernacle? B) Building the Tabernacle We progress to the building of a Tabernacle in the wilderness, in terms of the Covenant that Moses describes for us. Here the children of Israel will have to build a Tabernacle out of acacia wood, linen, goat s skin and other material, exactly as they have been instructed and will establish a place where GOD (YHVH) will dwell. (Made by man based on the pattern set out by GOD) Exodus 25:8-9 They are to make Me a sanctuary, so that I may live among them. 9 You are to make it according to everything I show you the design of the Tabernacle and the design of its furnishings. This is how you are to make it. Exodus 40:34-35 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of ADONAI filled the Tabernacle. 35 Moshe was unable to enter the Tent of meeting, because the cloud remained on it, and the glory of ADONAI filled the Tabernacle. C) The New Covenant The words of Paul, Peter and the other apostles, speak of a New Covenant - of a time when we will renew our minds and transform ourselves into a Body that will represent the Bride of Messiah. We have become sons of Abraham by adoption This means that we must now show the world that we are Priests and Kings!! 5

Romans 8:15-17 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to bring you back again into fear; on the contrary, you received the Spirit, who makes us sons and by whose power we cry out, Abba! (That is, Dear Father! ). 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our own spirits that we are children of God; 17 and if we are children, then we are also heirs, heirs of God and joint-heirs with the Messiah provided we are suffering with him in order also to be glorified with him. Building a Tabernacle of Living Stones And in this case once again we are to build a Tabernacle. This time it is a Tabernacle made up of Living Stones, with Y shua (Jesus) as the Cornerstone (made by man based on the pattern set by GOD). 1 Peter 2:5-7 You yourselves, as Living Stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be cohanim set apart for God to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to Him through Y shua the Messiah. 6 This is why the Tanakh says, Look! I am laying in Tziyon a stone, a chosen and precious Cornerstone; and whoever rests his trust on it will certainly not be humiliated. 1 Peter 2:7 Now to you who keep trusting, He is precious. But to those who are not trusting, The very stone that the builders rejected has become the Cornerstone D) The New Jerusalem In the words of the prophet John on Pathos, we find out that a New Jerusalem will descend from Heaven AND we will once again have this absolute intimacy with GOD (YHVH) (made by GOD). nations will be brought into it. Revelation 21:22-26 I saw no Temple in the city, for ADONAI, God of Heaven s armies, is its Temple, as is the Lamb. 23 The city has no need for the sun or the moon to shine on it, because God s Sh khinah gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25 Its gates will never close, they stay open all day because night will not exist there, 26 and the honor and splendor of the This New Jerusalem has a Tabernacle not made with human hands, and more over, we have a Great High Priest Whose sacrifice and service is unblemished. Hebrews 8:1-2, 6 Here is the whole point of what we have been saying: we do have just such a cohen gadol as has been described. And He does sit at the Right Hand of Hag dulah in heaven. 2 There He serves in the Holy Place, that is, in the true Tent of Meeting, the one erected not by human beings but by ADONAI. 6

But now the work Y shua (Jesus) has been given to do is far superior to theirs, just as the Covenant He mediates is better. For this Covenant has been given as Torah on the basis of better promises. CONNECTION BETWEEN THE CREATION OF THE GARDEN OF EDEN AND THE TABERNACLE If we reflect on these two stories, we cannot but help to see the undeniable connection/ similarity between these two examples. And once we register this fact, we are faced with further questions: Do we regard all of the objects/utensils as things? Do we regard all of the priestly deeds as ritual? Or do we realize the spiritual significance of each and every object/activity and utilize these to transform our-selves from the old man to a renewed ONE NEW MAN? Garden Of Eden compared to Tabernacle a) Let s start off with the beginning 1) The earth was void, and darkness covered the earth. The world had descended into ungodliness, since Adam and Eve had been removed from the Garden - intimacy with GOD (YHVH) had been removed. 2) GOD (YHVH) provides all that is needed it s His WORD and it s His design. The children of Israel are asked, those who are willing and committed, to make a contribution 3) GOD (YHVH) makes creation and mankind in His Image A man who is skilled, but also empowered with the Holy Spirit (Btzal el and Oholi av) is needed in order to make the Tabernacle. b) Now let s look at the actual creation/construction. 1) With the words let there be - GOD (YHVH) makes the waters above and the firmament below. (Genesis 1:6-10) - The Israelites make the Tabernacle. (Exodus 36:8) 7

2) - GOD (YHVH) makes the light that divides day and night. (Genesis 1:3-4) - The Israelites make the ARK. (Exodus 37:1) 3) GOD (YHVH) makes the animals, the birds, the fish, and the plants. (Genesis 1:11-12, 20-23) - The Israelites make all of the artifacts. (Exodus 37:17) 4) - And GOD (YHVH) saw that every thing that He made was good. (Genesis 1:31) - Moses saw that all the skilled work had been done, as GOD (YHVH) had commanded it to be done. (Exodus 39: 32, 43) 5) GOD (YHVH) completed the work that He had done. (Genesis 2:2) - Moses completed the work. (Exodus 40:33) 6) - And GOD (YHVH) blessed. (Genesis 2:3) - And Moses blessed. (Exodus 39:43) 7) - And GOD (YHVH) sanctified it. (Genesis 2:3) - And you shall sanctify it and all of its vessels (Exodus 40:9) I think you will agree that the correlation is extraordinary. The work of building in this example of a physical structure of the Tabernacle is detailed for us so that we can develop a vision of the work needed in the path of sanctification/holiness that we are to walk (note this is not about justification, or being reborn at all). WE BUILD THE ATTRIBUTES THAT CORRELATE TO THE OBJECTS IN THE TABERNACLE, AS OUR CHARACTER, AND WE DEVELOP THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT AS A FIRST FRUIT OFFERING. There are many that would tell you to beware of works, that we have been saved by grace, and that all works are legalism/ritual/law. 8

A careful reading of Paul, in the letter to the Corinthians, will reveal the exact opposite. Here we are told to build on the Foundation, which is the Messiah and we are clearly told that our works will be judged. More clearly we are told to endure that the period over which we work is long, but that there is a reward. 1 Corinthians 3:9-15 For we are God s co-workers; you are God s field, God s building. 10 Using the grace God gave me, I laid a foundation, like a skilled master-builder; and another man is building on it. But let each one be careful how he builds. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Yeshua the Messiah. 12 Some will use gold, silver or precious stones in building on this foundation; while others will use wood, grass or straw. 13 But each one s work will be shown for what it is; the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire the fire will test the quality of each one s work. 14 If the work someone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward; 15 if it is burned up, he will have to bear the loss: he will still escape with his life, but it will be like escaping through a fire. However most critically, Paul makes sure that we understand three important principles: a) That we are the temple of GOD (YHVH) b) That the Spirit of GOD (YHVH) dwells in us c) That the temple of GOD (YHVH) must be Holy, if we want GOD (YHVH) to dwell within us 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Don t you know that you people are God s temple and that God s Spirit lives in you? 17 So if anyone destroys God s temple, God will destroy him. For God s temple is holy, and you yourselves are that temple. **NUGGET!** The physical Tabernacle in the wilderness, has been transformed into a Tabernacle made up of believers (Living Stones). 9

How do I become a connected Living Stone? 1) I understand that I must bring a first-fruit offering of every good gift that GOD (YHVH) bestows on us. On entering the land, the Israelites were to make a first fruits offering. To show them that GOD (YHVH) was still the Source even though the manna had stopped falling, He let them pick of the fruit of the land. What type of first fruit were there in the physical? A grape vine so large that two men with a stick were needed to carry it God blesses us with talents/gifts Can you, have you offered a first fruits offering in thanksgiving? James 1:17-18 Every good act of giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father who made the heavenly lights; with him there is neither variation nor darkness caused by turning. 18 Having made his decision, he gave birth to us through a Word that can be relied upon, in order that we should be a kind of first-fruits of all that he created. 2) I accept that the gifts bestowed upon me by GOD (YHVH) are meant as a means to bless and serve the Body of Messiah. These gifts are not a means to position/power. These gifts are not meant to elevate any one man or woman. Instead these gifts are meant to pass through the individual, like a free flowing pipe. A gift freely received a gift freely given 1 Corinthians 3:4-12 For when one says, I follow Sha ul and another, I follow Apollos, aren t you being merely human? 5 After all, what is Apollos? What is Sha ul? Only servants through whom you came to trust. Indeed, it was the Lord who brought you to trust through one of us or through another. 6 I planted the seed, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. 7 So neither the planter nor the waterer is anything, only God who makes things grow 8 planter and waterer are the same. However, each will be rewarded according to his work. 9 For we are God s co-workers; you are God s field, God s building. 10

Hopefully, you are not wasting you gifts and talents like the lazy worker in the parables. Many times we become used to the easy life. GOD (YHVH) says that we will have to deal with the weeds while on earth, but we have every indication that the extent of the harvest can still be something huge. Matthew 25:24-28 Now the one who had received one talent came forward and said, I knew you were a hard man. You harvest where you didn t plant and gather where you didn t sow seed. 25 I was afraid, so I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here! Take what belongs to you! 26 You wicked, lazy servant! said his master, So you knew, did you, that I harvest where I haven t planted? and that I gather where I didn t sow seed? 27 Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, so that when I returned, I would at least have gotten back interest with my capital! 28 Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten. 3) Every believer must step into their role of servant leader-where they will visibly love your neighbour in every possible way. It s so easy to help those of the same language; culture, etc. but are you ready to respond in the manner reflected by the Good Samaritan? The two men who are anointed to build the Tabernacle, utensils, clothes, and so forth had to work to a particular design. Can you imagine the tension and stress, when people are trying their best and someone comes past and says I am sorry, but you need to do it all again, or you have to fix this!! Leader-servants are those who always put themselves into the shoes of others before they react. 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 For although I am a free man, not bound to do anyone s bidding, I have made myself a slave to all in order to win as many people as possible. 20 That is, with Jews, what I did was put myself in the position of a Jew, in order to win Jews. With people in subjection to a legalistic perversion of the Torah, I put myself in the position of someone under such legalism, in order to win those under this legalism, even though I myself am not in subjection to a legalistic perversion of the Torah. 21 With those who live outside the framework of Torah, I put myself in the position of someone outside the Torah in order to win those outside the Torah although I myself am not outside the framework of God s Torah but within the framework of Torah as upheld by the Messiah. 22 With the weak I became weak, in order to win the weak. With all kinds of people I have become all kinds of things, so that in all kinds of circumstances I might save at least some of them. 1 Corinthians 9:23 But I do it all because of the rewards promised by the Good News, so that I may share in them along with the others who come to trust. 4) And finally, every single believer will work to transform the physical utensil into a spiritual reality in the heart and soul of his/her life. These utensils are designed to be apart of our spiritual being. If we do not have spiritual reality of each utensil operating in our lives, we are not fit to be priests inside the heavenly Tabernacle. 11

Menorah This item is made of beaten gold. The form speaks to the tree of life. The olive oil lamps shine out of the form, which represents the almond tree the rod of authority. The most powerful example to GOD (YHVH) determining His preference for authority is the story of the rebellion of Korah where Aaron s rods blossomed and produced fruit. We will be asked to exhibit godly authority in the walk how do we ensure fairness and justice for all? Do we submit to others who have greater experience and wisdom? Or are we lone rangers who only want to do our own thing? Numbers 17:23 The next day Moshe went into the tent of the testimony, and there he saw that Aharon s staff for the house of Levi had budded it had sprouted not only buds but flowers and ripe almonds as well. The Hebrew word for almond is Strong s 8246 shaqad and has the following meanings: To watch (to watch over something, to guard the threshold) To lie in wait The first one to arouse and wake someone who makes haste and with energy Not only is it an indication of whether you are walking in Godly authority, but your walk on earth has to reveal that lifestyle. Do you judge fairly, without bias, with compassion? Do you stand for justice, and oppose all forms of abuse/slavery? Do you seek to train, uplift, and empower all those with whom you make contact? 12

Table of Shewbread The item is made out of acacia wood and gold. The combination of these two items speaks to: o o Humility Divinity On the table are twelve loaves of bread (two stacks of six each). One for every tribe every gifting /calling. In other Words the entire Body of Messiah is represented here, every day of every week. The loaves or manna is replaced every week. As a spiritual Living Stone: Are you baking a fresh understanding/teaching of the WORD of GOD (YHVH) for those who live near you? Do you eat the same bread that you teach, in other words, do you really live what you say? Do you apply the purity of the Holy Spirit [frankincense] to the bread that you offer? Altar of Incense The importance of the incense is measured in the detail, which describes the recipe, the number of spices that are to be used. Each one of the spices speaks to an attribute, that the firstborn, son of Abraham must have in order to be able to produce the sweet fragrance that will be acceptable to GOD (YHVH). As an example, Myrrh in the spiritual domain, speaks to the giftings of compassion, mercy, servant-hood mixed with the prayers and intercession that cover/remove pain/hurt rejection. The detail of the mixture is a secret there are many people who try to make this a physical matter only, i.e. it s important to have/use the incense. But in reality, it s the spiritual mixture that we must get right! The only place where you should use this incense is inside the Tabernacle. The ONLY Tabernacle that is legitimate today, is one made of living (Priests and Kings) stones, with Y shua (Jesus) as Cornerstone. Revelation 8:3-4 Another angel came and stood at the altar with a gold incense-bowl, and he was given a large quantity of incense to add to the prayers of all God s people 4 on the gold altar in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense went up with the prayers of God s people from the hand of the angel before God. 13

A FINAL THOUGHT Spiritual beings, worship GOD (YHVH) in a Heavenly Tabernacle that closely matches the physical/wilderness one. If we fail to build the Spiritual Menorah, Table of Shew-bread, and the Altar of Incense INTO our HEARTS, we will not be able to enter in. Build the character that reflects the Image of GOD (YHVH). Shalom!! 14
