The God who sends THE WORSHIP Supplies: Praise music, optional: musical instruments Teacher Tip: To help children identify time set aside for worship, designate a special corner or area for singing, collecting offering, and watching the worship illustration. God sent manna for His people THE WORD Supplies: Teacher s Bible with bookmark at Exodus 16:12, picture of the Bible story, clear jar or basket with sweet cereal flakes Before we begin our Bible Time, let s say our Classroom Promise with the motions. With my eyes on my teacher; Point to eyes. My mouth quiet as can be, Place index finger over mouth as quiet sign. I will listen to hear, Cup hand around ear. How God loves you and me. Hug self, point to others, and then self. Let s reach deep in our pockets and pull out our listening ears. Reach in your pocket and cup your hands behind your ears as if listening. Who can tell me what you ate for breakfast this morning? (Children respond.) Was it good? (Children respond.) I love to eat a good breakfast, especially if I am very hungry. Our story today is about a food the Israelites ate every day for forty years! That food was called manna. Display the jar or basket with the cereal flakes. Manna may have looked like these cereal flakes and tasted sweet like honey. Let s listen to our story. Handle Bible as a special treasure, leaving it open to Exodus 16:12. WATCH THE WORD: EXODUS 16:2-5, 11-16, 32 Read the story below or retell the passage in your own words. To illustrate the story, show a picture of the Bible story from a children s Bible, the coloring page, or other source. In the desert, the people grumbled. They were hungry; their tummies rumbled. Then the Lord heard them complain, So He sent them manna every day. When they woke each morning they found Thin flakes of bread right there on the ground. What is it? God s people said. Moses said, God sent you bread. He said, Take what you need each day. God watched to see if they would obey. Moses put some manna in a jar to keep To remind them that God sends what we need. How did God know the Israelites were hungry? (He heard them grumbling.) What did God send them to eat? (Manna, which is flakes of bread.) Page 6 of 11

God sends us what we need THE WAY Teacher Tip: Craft and games can be presented at the same time in different areas or one at a time depending on class size and teaching style. CRAFT: JAR OF MANNA Purpose: To focus on God s plan for us to remember His miracles. Supplies: Sturdy white paper, tape or glue, crayons Prepare: Cut a 5-inch square of white paper for to tear into manna flakes. From sturdy white paper, cut out two of the same jar shapes. On one of the jar shapes, print: The Lord gives you bread. Exodus 16:29 Adaptation for Ages 2-3: This craft was developed for ages 4-5. To adapt the craft for younger children, you may choose to attach the two jar cutouts to a paper bag or large cup so that it s easier for the children to place the paper pieces (manna) into the jar. 1. Decorate the jar cutouts with crayons. 2. Around the edges, tape or glue the jar cutouts together. Leave an opening at the top. 3. Tear white paper into small pieces to make manna. 4. Place the paper pieces (manna) into the jar. Craft Discussion: Manna is what the people called the bread flakes God sent each morning. The manna was a miracle from God. A miracle is something only God can do. God commanded Moses to place some of the manna in a special jar to remind the people that God sent them what they needed. You can take your jar of manna home to remind you that God will always send you what you need. Page 7 of 11

THE WAY continued GAME: SENT FROM GOD Purpose: Children play a game to remind them that God will always send what we need. Supplies: Laminated pictures (family, Bible, food, clothes), Unit 9 Bible Memory Verse Song Here Am I Prepare: Hang the four pictures around the play area. Walk around the room and look at each of the pictures with the children. 2. After you have looked at all four pictures, ask the children, What else has God given us? (Friends, home, church, etc.) 3. Let s play a game. While the music is playing, you can dance and move about the room. When the music stops, I want you to stand by one of the pictures. 4. Play the Unit 9 Bible Memory Verse Song Here Am I. 5. Periodically stop the music. Help the children find a picture to stand by. 6. Play as often as you like. GAME: WHAT IS IT? Purpose: To help children identify with the Israelites and remember God s miracle of sending manna. Supplies: Sweet, dried cereal flakes (one small handful per child) to represent manna, sand-colored sheet or banner paper to represent the desert floor Optional: Small, torn pieces of paper can be used instead of cereal flakes. Teacher Tip: Use this game to lead into snack time. Have some extra flakes handy to give to children who pick up few or no flakes. How do you feel when you are very hungry? (Children respond.) How do you feel when you wake up to a great surprise? (Children respond.) Let s pretend we are God s people in the desert when they were hungry and had no food. 1. Lay the sand-colored sheet or banner paper on the floor to create the desert floor. 2. Instruct the children not to walk on the sheet or banner paper. 3. Children wander around the desert (classroom) grumbling, I m hungry. 4. Children lay or sit on the floor with their head in their hands, snoring and pretending to sleep. 5. While the children s eyes are closed, the teacher spreads cereal flakes on the desert floor. 6. The teacher says, Wake Up! Wake up! Come and see. 7. The children sit up and ask, What is it? What is it? 8. The teacher says, There s manna here for you to eat! 9. The children collect the flakes. Move the children to the tables with their flakes for snack time. Page 8 of 11
