Week of August 19, 2012 Lessons for the Leader Do you believe children are gifts from God? We read in Mark that children are important. Read Mark 10:13-16. What was happening? Who were the disciples keeping away from Jesus? The disciples tried to guard Jesus' privacy, but Jesus never refused to see anyone. Was Jesus bothered by the men keeping the children away? Maybe the children seemed unimportant to the disciples. However, to Jesus, children were important. Are the preschoolers you teach important to you or are you just a babysitter? Note what Jesus did. Did He speak softly to the men? Did He tell the children to leave? The answer to both questions is no. Jesus took the children in His arms and blessed them. He gently cared for them. Are you gentle with the preschoolers? Look for the object lesson Jesus taught in verses 14-15. The Jewish children portrayed trust, humility, and obedience. The children were completely dependent upon their parents. The object lesson was on kingdom citizenship what every disciple needs to enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus' disciples are to be characterized by dependence, humility, obedience, and willingness to receive citizenship into God's kingdom as a gift of grace. Check your own kingdom citizenship. Can you or others see these qualities in you? What qualities do you need to work on most? Define important. Do you feel important to Jesus? Do you help preschoolers feel important to Jesus? What can you do to teach preschoolers they are important to Jesus? Understand you are important to Jesus and then you can teach the children through your actions. What do these symbols mean? 1aApplication Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. You will need four different letters on your paper." Distribute paper and markers. Assist kids with printing as needed. Call for children to sit together. Ask: "What letters did you find?" Invite responses. Say: "The four letters are l, o, v, and e. These letters spell the word love. Jesus taught about love. Each one of us is important to Jesus. No matter where we are, or what we do, Jesus loves us." Worship 3aSing "I Can Clap" (DVD, 2 minutes) 4aWelcome Children (1 minute) State: "I am so glad you came to worship. You are special to me. Each group will learn a different part of the chorus of 'Jesus Loves Me' to sing during the Bible story." Form the four groups and assign the parts. Song Parts Groups 1-3: "Yes, Jesus loves me." Group 4: "The Bible tells me so." Say: "I'll show the number with my fingers when it is time for the groups to sing. When I show one finger [demonstrate], group 1 will sing your part. I will show two fingers for group 2, and so on. Let's practice singing." Practice showing numbers and leading groups to sing their parts. Open your Bible to Mark 10. Tell the story, stopping as indicated for the children to sing their parts of the chorus. Jesus Taught About Love Page 2 of 11

Jesus Taught About Love Based on Mark 10:13-16 One day, some people tried to take little children to Jesus. (1) The people wanted Him to touch their children, because they knew Jesus was special. (2) When His disciples saw the people, they told the people to take their children away. When Jesus saw His disciples keeping the children and families away, He was unhappy. (3) Jesus told the disciples to let the children come to Him. He told the disciples not to stop children from coming to Him. Children are an important part of God's kingdom. (4) Then Jesus took the children in His arms and loved them. (1, 2, 3, 4) 11aReview the Bible Story (3 minutes) Print "Teaching Picture 12 Love" (CD). Display the picture. Ask: "What do you see in the picture?" Invite several children to respond. Quiz: "Who did the disciples try to stop from seeing Jesus? (children) What did Jesus tell His disciples? (let children come, do not stop children, children are important) What did Jesus do when the children came to Him?" (loved them) Allow kids to pass the picture around the group. Continue: "We learn from our Bible story that Jesus taught about love. Jesus loved the children. Each one of us is important to Jesus. That means we are special to Jesus." 12 Learn the Bible Verse (5 minutes) Paper, marker Print Mark 10:14 from your preferred translation. Teacher Tips Print and use "Mark 10:14 Paraphrase" (CD). Adjust words as needed. Display and read aloud verse. Form two groups. Assign the first group two parts of the verse: "Jesus said" and "to Me." Assign the second group two parts: "Let the children come" and "Mark 10:14." Point to words on verse as kids repeat parts. Lead kids to say their parts faster. 13aMake Application (3 minutes) Ask: "What word do we use when talking about people your age? (children) What did we learn today?" (Children are important to Jesus.) Say: "Look around the room. Everyone is different. Everyone is special. Jesus loves us and has special plans for each of us. What are some ways we can learn about Jesus? (read the Bible, pray, worship with other people, sing, listen to Bible stories) Repeat after me. 'I am important to Jesus.' " Lead kids to repeat the last line three times, gaining speed each time. 14 Sing and Play (5 minutes) Lyrics Sing to the tune of "London Bridge" Jesus loves us, yes, He does, Yes, He does, yes, He does Jesus loves us, yes, He does Jesus loves [say child's name] While child is "captured," sing: Let him/her learn about Jesus About Jesus, about Jesus Let him/her learn about Jesus Jesus loves [say child's name] Line up children single file.
