July Newsletter 2017 Dinner and a Movie Event Viewing of: Rick Steve s LUTHER and the Reformation Sunday, August 20, 2017 Time: 4pm-8pm Location: NSLC for the Big Screen Please bring a dish to pass Themed Pot Luck: German Cuisine Followed by the movie and a discussion. The year of 2017 marks the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation. In 1517, the German monk Martin Luther collected 95 points to stoke discussion about the corruption of the medieval Church. This video explains the story and how it changed Christianity forever. SIMPLY GIVING Don t forget that as you make plans for summer holidays and time away, your church still needs you! Chicken Dinner. Labor Day Weekend 9 AM at New Scandinavia Blessing of The Pets Service Sunday, July 2 at 10:00 a.m. in the Courtyard at Dallas Lutheran Church Philosophical Reasoning 2

Why Bless the Animals? When we bless something, we focus our attention on the perfection that God put into it when God created it. When we bless what is good in our lives we increase it, adding our positive energy to the positive energy that is already a part of it. The Rev. Heather Kistner, will perform a hands-on Blessing of the Pets on Sunday, July 2, 2017 at 10:00AM outside in the Courtyard at Dallas Lutheran. This blessing includes horses, rabbits, hamsters, snakes, birds, turtles, iguanas, fish, guinea pigs, ferrets, hedge hogs, geckos, gerbils, mice, and of course, dogs and puppies, cats and kittens. Each animal is blessed for a long life, good health and a happy home. The owner is blessed with a charge for their unique responsibility to ensure the animals well-being as well as their relationship can continue to be a blessing. Where is the Blessing Held? This is an outdoor event, (rain or shine) and will be held in the courtyard of the Dallas Lutheran Church; near back church parking lot. Must the Animals be Leashed? It is amazing how well the animals get along together in this special setting, but we do encourage pet owners to bring their pets in carriers or on leashes. It assures the owners that nothing is going to startle the animal and cause it to run away in a strange neighborhood. Who is served by a Blessing of the animals? Animals are an extension of the family and very much beloved by their owners. Many people fuss over their pets in the same way they do their children and are very upset when their animals become ill or make their transition. By honoring the significance of these special family members, we provide joy and comfort to their owners - and the pets benefit as well. Owners have reported that the blessing drew forth more loving behavior in their pets. Some owners have reported better health for themselves and their animal - after a blessing. Animals help to create community by introducing animal-lovers to other animal-lovers and helping them find a common ground. And this event fosters intergenerational communion, attracting visitors in strollers, wheelchairs, on bicycles, on foot and on walkers, by horseback, in trucks, cars and on motorcycles. Why hold a Blessing of the Pets in your church or community? This patterns after the Feast of Day of St. Francis of Assisi, who was especially loved for acknowledging the Spirit of God in all creatures. Our mission statement is In Christ, we are called to reach, teach and celebrate God s Word Contest: Design our Mission Statement Letterhead The winner will receive $25 Cash! We are looking for folks to come up with a design for our mission statement that captures the people, our mission and our call to serve Christ. Submit your designs to Rhonda in the office by August 1 st, and we will present to the congregation the new letterhead in September! 3
