We are committed to responding to each other through communities and ministries of faith and love, addressing our spiritual, social and educational needs. We believe that each of us is called to be a supportive, compassionate, and caring Christian witness in Mission Viejo, the Diocese of Orange and in the world.

Page 2 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor s Page Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ, FOLLOW THAT STAR I ve always been a huge fan of astronomy, and as our ability to peer into the depths of space, and thus time has increased, the cosmological questions keep piling up. Are we alone in the universe or has life, even intelligent life, arisen elsewhere? Are there other dimensions, or even other whole universes? If so, what are the religious implications? Pop culture, which is hopelessly infected with revisionist historical views, promotes the idea that religion in general is somehow incompatible with science, and that the Catholic Church, in particular, has been hostile to open scientific inquiry. It imagines the likes of Copernicus, Galileo and other brave souls harassed, persecuted, excommunicated and even executed by a supposedly tyrannical, repressive hierarchy desperate to protect its influence and prestige at all costs. It is pure fantasy, for while there may have been occasions when certain individuals within the Church may have acted or spoken rashly in response to certain lines of inquiry, the truth is far richer and more complex. One example may illustrate that fact. In 1277, the Bishop of Paris, Etienne Tempier, at the encouragement of Pope John XXI, (who was also a physician, by the way) wrote a famous condemnation of many neo-aristotelian ideas that had crept into the curriculum of natural philosophy at the University of Paris and elsewhere, one of which proposed that the First Cause cannot make many worlds. Even the venerable Thomas Aquinas fell prey to Aristotelian errors, and it was widely thought that the real object of Bishop s Tempier s critique was Thomas himself. In defending God s omnipotence, Tempier insisted that, whether He had actually done so or not, God could certainly choose to create as many worlds as He wished, and if so, He could also create life on those worlds. The critique had a galvanizing effect on intellectual inquiry, opening the door to much wider questions regarding the known (and unknown) universe. Whereas Aristotelian determinists held that everything that we see around us, including the earth, sun and stars, were fixed, unchanging, and eternal, philosophers and theologians began speculating about multiple worlds, even multiple universes, up to and including Nicolas of Cusa, a 15 th century prominent Christian theologian who proposed the existence of life on an infinite number of worlds. Ironically, these views remained active until Darwin. His work on evolution led many secular scientists to reassert the Aristotelian claim that life could only have arisen on Earth and nowhere else. How the worm turns. Some historians have called Tempier s critique the birthplace of modern science because it encouraged and led to so many new lines of thought based on the observation of nature. While we can t necessarily draw a straight line from Tempier to the modern world, one wonders where we would be today if the Church hadn t overthrown Aristotle. Had belief in a closed, eternal, unchanging cosmos held sway, we may never have looked up and wondered what else is out there to discover. It turns there s a lot more, and we ve probably just begun to scratch the surface. The Church doesn t despise science. She practically invented it. Yours in Christ, Father Bruce

St. Kilian Catholic Church Page 3 World Marriage Day Sunday, February 9th is World Marriage Day which honors husband and wife as head of the family, the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily, married life. Prayer for our Marriage Heavenly Father, we thank You for your tremendous gift of the Sacrament of Marriage. Enable us to grow in our intimacy with You and with each other. Teach us the beauty of forgiveness so we may become more and more one in heart, mind and body. Strengthen our communication with each other, and help us become living signs of your love. Help us to be examples of commitment, love and service to our families and children. Make us a sign of the unity which Jesus prays for at the Last Supper. We open ourselves to the guidance of your Holy Spirit, who empowers us to love in Jesus name and walk in His footsteps. Amen.
