Unity And Variety In The Community 1 Corinthians 12:1-30 Mark Schatzman Russell Dorch

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through Him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 1 Corinthians 12:1 (ESV)

WHO: The work of the Holy Spirit Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says Jesus is accursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except in the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:1-3 (ESV)

WHO: The work of the Holy Spirit The work of the Trinity Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 (ESV)

Where: 1 Pet 4:10-11; Eph 4:7-13; Spiritual Gift A special power given by the Holy Spirit to a Christian to build up the body of Christ. Nelson s Bible Dictionary Who: What: Rom 12:1-8; 1 Cor 12:1-31 Every believer... has the privilege of supernatural ability... A pipeline of grace from the Holy Spirit to His Church. MS How: Why: to serve and/or speak through the Holy Spirit's power... So the body is built and Jesus is glorified.

WHY: From the Holy Spirit to each believer To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 1 Corinthians 12:7 (ESV) for the common good.

For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to WHAT: another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to Not an exhaustive list of gifts Includes ordinary and spectacular gifts Highlights the sign or charismatic gifts another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 (ESV)

CESSATIONIST CHARISMATIC

CESSATIONIST CHARISMATIC

HOW: Unity and variety in the body. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or free and all were made to drink of one Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:12-13 (ESV)

HOW: Unity and variety in the body. No inferiority... don't envy! For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 1 Corinthians 12:14-17 (ESV)

HOW: Unity and variety in the body. No inferiority... don't envy! No self-sufficiency... don't isolate! But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you, nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable... 1 Corinthians 12:18-22 (ESV)

But God has so composed the body... 1 Corinthians 12:24b (ESV)...that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 1 Corinthians 12:25b-27 (ESV)

But God has so composed the body... 1 Corinthians 12:24b (ESV)...that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 1 Corinthians 12:25b-27 (ESV) NOW WHAT: Discover your gifts through serving. Develop your gifts by using them for the common good. Gratefully affirm other s gifts. Glorify God for His work through us.
