ASENSION LUTHERAN HURH THE LUTHERAN HURH MISSOURI SYNOD LITTLETON, OLORADO November 12, 2017 10:30 am TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY AFTER ENTEOST The Resurrection of the Body AS WE GATHER The final three weeks of the hurch Year are traditionally concerned with the last things. The lessons of the hurch bring a special opportunity to reflect on the end of time and on the end of our earthly lives. In the Apostles reed, we affirm our belief in the resurrection of the body, which is God s good but temporary gift to us while we are living on earth. With all who have died in the faith before us, we await the coming of the Lord. aul writes, We shall all be changed. Our faithful worship helps us prepare for that glorious event!

Just and true are Your ways, O King of the nations! Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. All nations will come and worship You, for Your righteous acts have been revealed. Alleluia! Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination. astor: eople: astor: eople: Let us confess our sins to God, our heavenly Father. Merciful Father, we bring before You our confession, imploring Your mercy for the sake of Jesus hrist, our Savior. We are sinful from birth and daily add to that burden. Our actions have been thoughtless and have resulted in evil. Our words have been hurtful, and we have not always honored Your name in our speaking. We have left undone many things that could have brought glory and praise to You. O Lord, grant us Your grace and the blessing of forgiveness. By the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, lead us to amend our sinful lives, that we may grow daily in righteousness and be bringers of peace in our time. Because of the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus, God promises full and free forgiveness. As a called and ordained servant of hrist, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

WORD Old Testament: Amos 5:18-24 (The Lord calls for justice.) Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord! Why do you long for the day of the Lord? That day will be darkness, not light. It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him. Will not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness? I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me. Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! Lector: eople: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Epistle: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (The Day of the Lord is coming.) Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in hrist will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words. Lector: eople: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

ongregation, please stand. Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13 (The parable of the wise and foolish virgins.) astor: eople: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-fifth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight the cry rang out: Here s the bridegroom! ome out to meet him! Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out. No, they replied, there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves. But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. Later the others also came. Lord, Lord, they said, open the door for us! But he replied, Truly I tell you, I don t know you. Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour. astor: eople: This is the Gospel of the Lord. raise to You, O hrist. HORUS SERMON astor Larson REEDAL ONFESSION OF FAITH The First Article In the First Article, we confess that our bodies are a gift of God. It is the gracious action of our reator that continues to preserve us during our earthly life. That care continues beyond death as we look forward to everlasting life. We confess: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. What does this mean? I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true. RAYER SHARING OF THE EAE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. You may now greet one another in the name of the Lord using eace be with you

HOLY OMMUNION OUR LORD S BODY AND BLOOD REFAE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. THE WORDS OF ONSERATION In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. THE LORD S RAYER LSB (Inside back-cover)
