THE SERVIE HYN In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. ONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart, and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him, in the name of our Lord Jesus hrist, to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord. who made heaven and earth. (Psalm 124:8) I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord. and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. (Psalm 32:5) O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess to you all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended you and justly deserved your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray of your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of your beloved Son, Jesus hrist, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being. Upon this your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus hrist I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. OR Almighty God, our aker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess to you that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against you by thought, word, and deed; therefore we flee for refuge to your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus hrist. O most merciful God, you have given your onlybegotten Son to die for us, have mercy on us and for his sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of you and of your will and true obedience to your Word, to the end that by your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus hrist our Lord. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy on us and has given his only Son to

1 die for us and for his sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on his name, he gives power to become the children of God and has promised them his Holy Spirit. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved. (ark 16:16) Grant this, Lord, to us all. 2 THE INTROIT The Introit for the Day with the Gloria Patri shall be sung or said. GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. THE KYRIE Lord, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. hrist, have mercy on us. hrist, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. OR Lord, have mercy on us. hrist, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. GLORIA IN EXELSIS Glory be to God on high! Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will toward men 3. We praise you, we bless you, we worship you, we glorify you, we give thanks to you for your great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus hrist: Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. You take away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. You sit at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy on us. For you only are holy; you only are the Lord; you only, O hrist, with the Holy Spirit, are most high in the glory of God the Father. 1 onfession and Absolution from Saxony, 1581. 2 onfession and Absolution from ecklenburg, 1545 3 Or Glory be to God on high! and on earth peace, good will toward men. 1

THE OLLET FOR THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Then shall the inister say the ollect for the Day THE EPISTLE The Epistle is from the chapter of, beginning at the verse. 4 The Epistle ended, the inister shall say: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. THE GRADUAL When the Gradual is omitted, the Hallelujah or the Sentence for the Season may be sung. THE HALLELUJAH Hallelujah. In Lent this Sentence shall be sung instead of the Hallelujah: hrist humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:8) THE GOSPEL The Holy Gospel is written in the chapter of St., beginning at the verse. Glory be to you, O Lord. Then shall the inister read the Gospel for the Day. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, O hrist. THE REED THE NIENE REED 4 It is common practice to omit the verse in the announcement of a lesson. 2

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus hrist, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who, for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin ary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and he shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe one holy hristian and apostolic church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead; and the life of the world to come. THE APOSTLES' REED OR I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus hrist his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin ary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy hristian church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. THE HYN THE SERON The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in hrist Jesus. (Philippians 4:7) 3

THE OFFERTORY I The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem; Then will you delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings. (Psalm 51:16-19a) reate in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. II ast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. (Psalm 51:10-12) THE OFFERING THE GENERAL PRAYER Let us pray. Almighty and most merciful God, the Father of our Lord Jesus hrist: We give you thanks for all your goodness and tender mercies, especially for the gift of your dear Son, and for the revelation of your will and grace. Implant your Word in us, that, in good and honest hearts, we may keep it, and bring forth fruit by patient continuance in well doing. Rule and govern your hurch universal, that it may be preserved in the pure doctrine of your saving Word by which faith toward you may be strengthened, and charity increased in us toward all mankind. Send forth your light and your truth to the uttermost parts of the earth. Raise up faithful pastors and missionaries to preach the Gospel in our own land and to all nations; and guide, protect, and prosper them in all their labors. Bless the institutions of the hurch; its colleges, its seminaries, and all its schools; that they may send forth men and women to serve you, in the inistry of the Word, the inistry of ercy, and all the walks of life. 4

Let the light of your Word ever shine within our homes. Keep the children of the hurch in the covenant which you made with them in Holy Baptism; and grant all parents grace to bring them up in faith toward you and in obedience to your will. Grant also health and prosperity to all that are in authority, especially to the President [and ongress] of the United States, the Governor [and Legislature] of this ommonwealth, and to all our Judges and agistrates; and endue them with grace to rule after your good pleasure, to the maintenance of righteousness, and to the hindrance and punishment of wickedness, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, in all godliness and honesty. All who are in trouble, want, sickness, anguish of labor, peril of death, or any other adversity, especially those who are in suffering for your name and for your truth's sake, comfort, O God, with your Holy Spirit, that they may receive and acknowledge their afflictions as the manifestation of your fatherly will. And although we have deserved your righteous wrath and many punishments, O most erciful Father, remember not the sins of our youth, nor our many transgressions; but out of your unspeakable goodness, grace and mercy, defend us from all harm and danger of body and soul. Preserve us from false and pernicious doctrine, from war and bloodshed, from plague and pestilence, from all calamity by fire and water, from hail and tempest, from failure of harvest and from famine, from anguish of heart and despair of your mercy, and from an evil death. And in every time of trouble, show yourself a very present help, the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe. ause also the needful fruits of the earth to prosper, that we may enjoy them in due season. Give success to all lawful occupations on land and sea: to all pure arts and useful knowledge: and crown them with your blessing. Here special supplications, intercessions, and prayers may be made. These, and whatever other things you would have us ask of you, God, grant us for the sake of the bitter sufferings and death of Jesus hrist, your only Son, our Lord and Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. If there is ommunion, the service continues at the PREFAE. If there is no ommunion, the service concludes with the LORD S PRAYER, HYN and BENEDITION. 5
