THE PARISH EUCHARIST 14 th SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY 2018 Including the Baptism of Amelia & Olivia Presiding: Fr John Austen Welcome! Hymn 545 Morning has broken In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit Amen The Lord be with you And also with you The children to be baptized are presented Jesus said, Let the children come to me. Do not stop them. We thank God for Amelia and Olivia who have come to be baptized today. Christ loves them and welcomes them into his Church. So I ask you all: Will you support Amelia and Olivia as they begin their journey of faith? All answer: We will. To the parents and godparents God knows each of us by name and we are his. Parents and godparents, you speak with and for Amelia and Olivia today. Will you pray for them, and help them to follow Christ? They answer: We will. Opening Prayer Almighty God, whose only Son has opened for us a new and living way into your presence: give us pure hearts and steadfast wills to worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the

unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Word of God Glory, glory hallelujah! Praise and glory be to Jesus! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Your word is truth, O Lord. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark Glory to you, O Lord 7.1-8,14-15,17-23 When the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands? He said to them, Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines. You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition. Then he called the crowd again and said to them, Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile. When he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about the parable. He said to them, Then do you also fail to understand? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile, since it enters, not the heart but the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? (Thus he declared all foods clean.) And he said, It is what comes out of a person that defiles. For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ 2

Glory, glory hallelujah! Praise and glory be to Jesus! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Your word is truth, O Lord. Sermon, then Hymn 587 Amazing grace (verses 1-4) The Baptism We all wander far from God and lose our way: Christ comes to find us and welcomes us home. In baptism we respond to his call. Therefore I ask: Do you turn away from sin? I do Do you reject evil? I do Do you turn to Christ as Saviour? I do Do you trust in him as Lord? I do Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross. Do not be ashamed of Christ. You are his for ever. All Stand bravely with him Against all the powers of evil And remain faithful to Christ To the end of your lives May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. Amen We move to the Font for the Prayer over the water Profession of faith Let us affirm our common faith in Jesus Christ. Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist? I believe and trust in him. Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us and rose again? I believe and trust in him. Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known in the world? I believe and trust in him. This is the faith of the Church 3

This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. After the baptism: There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism: by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body. We welcome you Into the fellowship of faith We are children Of the same heavenly Father We welcome you The peace of the Lord be always with you And also with you Hymn 725 Make me a channel of your peace The Great Thanksgiving & Communion The Lord be with you and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. We give thanks for God s glory and goodness 4

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, Holy is the Lord God almighty Blessed, blessed, blest is he who comes Comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest We remember Jesus Last Supper Jesus, Jesus, Jesus is the Lord Jesus is the Lord God almighty Jesus, Jesus, Jesus is the Lord Jesus is the Lord God almighty Who was and is and is to come Jesus, Jesus, Jesus is the Lord And the prayer concludes: Amen! Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. As the bread is broken: Mercy, mercy, pity, peace and love Jesus, O divine Lamb of mercy 5

Mercy, mercy, pity, peace and love Jesus, O divine Lamb of mercy You remedy a world of sin Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Lamb of mercy The gifts of God for the people of God Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord To the glory of God the Father Communion Song 494 Please join in the refrain: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night I will go, Lord, if you lead me I will hold your people in my heart Notices, then the Blessing You have received the light of Christ; walk in this light all the days of your life. Shine as lights in the world to the glory of God the Father. Go in the light and peace of Christ. Thanks be to God. Hymn 652 Guide me, O thou great Redeemer 6
