Reformation 500 The Englh Reformation in 16th century should be dear to our hearts, as at its forefront was desire to have Scripture liturgy in Englh. William Tyndale known as first great translator of Bible into modern Englh. Amazed at ignorance of Word of God rampant among priests, he declaimed to one clergyman, If God spare me life, ere many years I will cause a boy that driveth plough to know more of Scripture than thou dost. Between 1525 1531, Tyndale s translations of parts of Bible were printed overseas smuggled anonymously into Engl. They were soon banned, copies were gared burned. Though clergy did object merely to having an Englh version of Bible, anticatholic prefaces to separate books (especially to book of Romans) also stoked ir ire, as did polemical side notes (for example: in margins of Numbers 23:8 how can I curse whom God has not cursed? editor belligerently comments Pope can tell you how ). Tyndale was executed as a heretic in 1536. After Tyndale s death, Thomas Cranmer, Archbhop of Canterbury, a man of immense learning gentle temperament, obtained King Henry Eighth s permsion to publh a complete Englh Bible. Miles Coverdale completed Tyndale s translation, in 1541, a proclamation went out that th Bible in Englh should be set up in every parh church throughout realm. Though Henry VIII had wrested control of church in Engl from pope, political concerns were h sole motivation, Henry's ological outlook remained firmly Catholic. Only after king's death in 1547, with 9yearold Edward VI on throne, was Cranmer able to proceed with an Englhlanguage liturgy with a more Protestant outlook. The Book of Common Prayer was publhed in 1549, with an act of Parliament requiring it s use for all services in Engl. With exception of reign of Mary I ( Bloody Mary), it has been used continuously since that time, along with Coverdale s version of Psalter. (See, for example, Ralph Vaughan Williams settings of texts from Psalms 84 90 for anm today). Cranmer achieved an immense beauty of language. H words have become iconic in Englhspeaking world ( Dearly beloved, we are gared toger here in sight of God in face of th congregation ; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust ). Thomas Cranmer was executed as a heretic in 1556. Bloody Mary had ascended throne, apart from turning Engl back to Roman Catholicm, she resented Cranmer s complicity in divorce of her mor, Carine of Aragon, from Henry VIII. After two a half years of impronment, interrogation, torture, Cranmer in weakness signed a recantation of h evangelical beliefs, was condemned to death. Given opportunity to speak before being led to stake, he boldly renounced h recantation, proclaiming, forasmuch as h offended in writing contrary to heart, refore h shall be first punhed. When fires were lit, he thrust h h into flames, burning it off to a stump before rest of h body was consumed he died. Dr. Nathan Davy The Five Solas of Reformation The five Solas ( solus Latin word for alone or only ) present a helpful way of summarizing great mes of Reformation teaching about salvation through faith alone, by grace alone, in Chrt alone, on authority Scripture alone, to Glory of God alone. Though not stated as such until relatively recently, y clearly reflect beliefs of Protestant reformers. Sola fides Faith alone Th ordinance of God, that y which believe in Chrt, should be saved without works, by faith only, freely receiving remsion of ir sins. Thomas Cranmer Sola gratia Grace alone He who does not receive salvation purely through grace, independently of all good works, certainly will never secure it. Truly, n, we are saved by grace alone, without works or or merit. Martin Lur Solus Chrtus Chrt alone We see that our whole salvation all its parts are comprehended in Chrt. We should refore take care not to derive least portion of it from anywhere else...in short, since rich store of every kind of good abounds in Him, let us drink our fill from th fountain, from no or. John Calvin Sola Scriptura Scripture alone To a Chrtian man re can be nothing eir more necessary or profitable, n knowledge of holy Scripture, forasmuch as in it contained God s true word, setting forth H glory, also man's duty re no truth nor doctrine necessary for our justification everlasting salvation, but that (or may be) drawn out of that fountain Well of truth. Thomas Cranmer Soli Deo Gloria to God alone be glory And I will likewe pray that ye may hear, underst, obey with all reverence good will of God, declared unto world by Jesus Chrt, whose omnipotent Spirit remain with you for ever. Amen. Give glory to God alone. John Knox 8
