THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH JULY 30, 2017 JAZZ SUNDAY THE EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Virginia Wieringa, Celestial Timing 5, 2014 BECOMING AWARE The first generation out of slavery invented jazz music. It is a music birthed out of freedom. And that is the closest thing I know to Christian spirituality. ~ Donald Miller, Blue Like Jazz The most important word in the justice vocabulary is always we. ~ William Barber, The Third Reconstruction
GATHERING MUSIC AS WE GATHER The Old Rugged Cross George Bennard The text is that of hymn 548 Something Bout Believing Duke Ellington Something 'bout believing that keeps me unfolding. Something 'bout believing that makes my soul sing. Something 'bout believing that keeps me holding on to God Almighty. Something 'bout believing that helps my mending, Something 'bout believing that there's no ending, Believing all the way because I'm depending on the God Almighty. I don't light a lamp to see the Sun, Don't need proof of God, Because I know that there ain't a-gonna be but One. Something 'bout believing in God s creation, Something 'bout believing the incarnation. Something 'bout believing that all our nations are under God Almighty. I want to be hip, I want to be cool, I got to be with it all the way, Because I ain't about to be no fool. Something 'bout believing that's greater than pleasure, Something 'bout believing that's more than treasure, Something 'bout believing that's beyond measure, Just one God Almighty. Something 'bout believing that keeps me going, Something 'bout believing my faith is growing. Something 'bout believing that keeps me knowing, I'll see God Almighty. A WORD ABOUT TODAY S SERVICE Precious Lord, Take My Hand The text is that of hymn 628 Come Sunday Lord, dear Lord above, God almighty, God of love, please look down and see my people through. I believe that God put sun and moon up in the sky. I don't mind the gray skies 'cause they're just clouds passing by. Heaven is a goodness time. A brighter light on high. Do unto others as you would have them do to you. And have a brighter by and by. Lord, dear Lord above, God almighty, God of love, please look down and see my people through. I believe God is now, was then and always will be. With God's blessing we can make it through eternity. Lord, dear Lord above, God almighty, God of love, please look down and see my people through. Just a Closer Walk with Thee The text is that of hymn 557 Thomas A. Dorsey Ellington Spiritual Marcus McFaul

Envelopes are in your bulletin and checks can be made out to Binkley with OGHS in the memo. PEACE AND JUSTICE LISTENING SESSION: Jesus calls us to welcome the stranger, bring good news to the poor, and set free the oppressed. How do we answer this call? One way is to take a look at the communities around us. What concerns you about Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Orange County? What needs and problems are you aware of and passionate about? Binkley Church will hold a Listening Session, a time for us to share our worries and passions. Our concerns, along with those of other churches, will be taken to a meeting of Orange County Justice United in September. From these concerns, JU will form an action agenda for the next two years. Binkley s Listening Session will be held Monday, July 31, from 7 to 8:30 pm, at the home of Ashley Nissler, 2313 Woodbury Drive, Hillsborough. All are welcome! For more information, please contact Velma Ferrell, Ashley Nissler, or Paul Lindsay.

PROGRESS AT THE SOUTH ESTES GARDEN: Last Saturday, Chon Shoaf, Micheal Palmer, Dylan Young and Paul Lindsay worked on building a raised garden bed and fence at the South Estes Housing Project. Eva Bailey, representing the neighborhood, is working with the town of Chapel Hill to bring in top soil. When the fence is finished, the group will need help with painting. Stayed tuned! MORE THAN POSTCARDS: Do you feel compelled to send more than postcards to your elected representatives to get your point across? The Alliance of Baptists reminds us, Even though we are in ordinary time in the liturgical calendar [time between Pentecost and Advent], these are not ordinary days. Our call to pursue God's justice for all creation compels us to individually transform our Alliance of Baptists' advocacy efforts into personal action." They suggest that we call our elected officials to let them know our view points. To begin, we can call Senator Thom Tillis (202-224-6342) and Senator Richard Burr ( 202-224-3154)to let them know our views on the health care debate in the US Senate. (FYI Senator Burr uses an answer machine; Senator Tillis, a very bored staffer.) DO YOU NEED HELP WITH GARDENING OR SMALL CARPENTRY JOBS THIS SUMMER? Why not hire Binkley members and keep it all in the family? If you would be interested in hiring a church member for a job, please contact Haih Siu at siuhaih@gmail.com.
