DEDICATION To my husband for many years of faith, and to the children of Salem UCC for performing my dramas. The Playwright STORY OF THE PLAY The season of giving often misplaces the reason for giving, but that s not so in A Shower For Baby Jesus. As the children plan a baby shower for Jesus before he has to leave for Egypt, they learn the story of His birth. Yes, the angels are just a bit impatient and some people don t like one of the wise men s gifts, but everyone is in the party spirit. This play can also serve as a mission project as the gifts the children bring for Jesus (diapers, food, clothes, and other basic needs)can be dedicated to babies born in even less fortunate circumstances. Children from 3 to 12 plus can perform. It requires relatively few props and uses old favorite Christmas carols. Performance time: 30 to 60 minutes, depending on songs used. ELDRIDGE PLAYS 1-800-95-CHURCH www.95church.com

CAST OF CHARACTERS (Large, flexible cast) MARY AND JOSEPH: Have no lines but mime actions. SPEAKERS 1-11: Require various levels of skill at memorizing. SPEAKERS A-H: Require more skill at memorizing lines. CHILDREN 1-7: May be younger as lines are simpler. 3 WISE MEN 4 ANGELS: Relatively easy lines. 3 OR MORE SHEPHERDS: Relatively easy lines. NARRATOR: Welcomes everyone. EXTRAS: Any number of children dressed for a nice party. PROPS/COSTUMES Manger containing doll with blankets, 2 stools, robes for biblical characters, 4 angel costumes, 3 wise men costumes, gold (simple cloth bag filled with slugs), frankincense (pretty perfume bottle), myrrh (small pretty box), gifts of basic needs for modern babies brought by each child as Christmas mission project, little drums, cymbals, tambourines, and other noise makers (optional). Licensed for copies and performance to original purchaser only.

A BABY SHOWER FOR JESUS (AT RISE: A doll is in a manger CS with MARY and JOSEPH sitting on stools behind it. This is especially effective if a light shines up out of manger, but great care should be taken as light bulbs are hot and straw and blankets burn. There should be space for ten or more people at either side of manger scene.) NARRATOR: Thank you all for coming to a Shower for Baby Jesus. As our children retell the old story, we must remember there are many babies born today with very little in the way of worldly goods, just like baby Jesus. As a mission project we bring our gifts for today s babies at. (Name place where gifts will go.) (SPEAKERS 1 and 2 enter from one direction, SPEAKER 3 from another. All three stand to one side of the manger. As they speak, JOSEPH will bend down as if speaking to MARY, who smiles and nods to him; one or both of them may touch the baby as if calming him.) SPEAKER 1: Hi, (SPEAKER 3 S real name.) it s good to see you. Are you going to the shower for Mary and Joseph s new baby? SPEAKER 3: I didn t know they had a baby? What a surprise. SPEAKER 2: Oh, it s no surprise. The prophets told of Jesus birth a long time ago. SPEAKER 3: I forgot about that. Well, I need to get a gift for the baby. SPEAKER 1 and 2: (Together.) We ll go with you. (SPEAKERS 1-3 exit. Older CHILDREN enter, among whom will be SPEAKERS A-H. Speakers may be to one side of manger while nonspeakers may be to the other. MARY and JOSEPH continue miming speech and tending baby.) ELDRIDGE PLAYS 1-800-95-CHURCH www.95church.com

SPEAKER A: The earliest promise of Jesus birth is right at the very beginning, in Genesis, when God said to the snake, Her offspring will crush your head and you will bite his heel. SPEAKER B: That s kind of hard to understand. Jeremiah said it more clearly. The Lord says, The time is coming when I will choose as king a righteous descendant of David. This king will rule wisely. He will be called, The Lord Our Salvation. SPEAKER C: I like the prophecy in Micah where the Lord says, Bethlehem Ephrata, you are one of the smallest towns in Judah, but out of you I will bring a ruler for Israel, whose family line goes back to ancient times. SPEAKER D: Isn t it remarkable that a Roman emperor should order all David s descendants back to Bethlehem to be counted in a census just at the right time. Otherwise, Jesus would have been born in Nazareth instead of Bethlehem. SPEAKER E: God really does work in surprising ways. SPEAKER F: My favorite prophecy is in Isaiah when he writes, A child is born to us! A son is given to us! He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. SPEAKER G: So God told everyone where Jesus would be born, what He would be, and who His family would be. SPEAKER H: About the only thing He didn t give was the exact date of Jesus birth. (CHILDREN sing O Little Town of Bethlehem or What Child Is This? Then the CHILDREN and SPEAKERS A-H exit. SPEAKERS 4, 5, and 6 enter together. They stand to one side of the manger not noticing it as they talk.) Licensed for copies and performance to original purchaser only.

SPEAKER 4: Did you hear that Mary had her baby in Bethlehem? That s such a tiny town. (MARY smiles and nods agreement.) SPEAKER 5: It isn t now. King David s descendants are there to be counted in the census and he has a lot of descendants. SPEAKER 6: I hear all the inns are so crowded that Mary had to give birth to Jesus in a stable. (JOSEPH looks grim and nods.) SPEAKER 4: That s no place for a king to be born. (MARY and JOSEPH bend over manger smiling.) SPEAKER 5: Maybe not for an earthly king, but Jesus is different. SPEAKER 4: It just doesn t seem special enough for our Messiah. SPEAKER 6: Oh, there are some pretty spectacular things happening. A star is shining over Bethlehem that can be seen everywhere. And shepherds say angels came and told them of Jesus birth. (MARY and JOSEPH look at each other as if surprised and then interested in what each one has to say. SPEAKERS 4, 5, 6 exit. Younger CHILDREN enter with SHEPHERDS to one side of the manger. The shepherds lay down as if sleeping at the feet of the children in party clothes. ANGELS enter and stand on the other side of the manger.) ANGEL 1: Hey, wake up, you shepherds. We have something to tell you. (SHEPHERDS stand up, rub eyes, and look at ANGELS.) SHEPHERD 1: How come you re so shiny and bright? ELDRIDGE PLAYS 1-800-95-CHURCH www.95church.com

ANGEL 2: We re angels. Can t you tell? SHEPHERD 2: How should I? I ve never seen an angel before. ANGEL 2: Take my word for it, we re angels and do we have good news for you. SHEPHERD 3: Why would angels talk to us? We re just shepherds. ANGEL 3: We want to tell you about Jesus. He s been born in Bethlehem. SHEPHERD 4: Who is Jesus? ANGEL 4: He s the promised Prince of Peace. SHEPHERD 4: He s come at last. Let s go see Him. (CHILDREN sing Away in a Manger or Mary Had a Little Baby. CHILDREN exit. SPEAKERS 7 and 8 enter from opposite directions and meet at one side of the manger.) SPEAKER 7: Have you heard about the party for Jesus? SPEAKER 8: Yes, I m going to it, but I don t know what gift to take. SPEAKER 7: Well, diapers are always a good idea and food and bottles and clothes. SPEAKER 8: He might enjoy some toys, too. SPEAKER 7: That s true, and there s things to keep him safe, like baby monitors and car seats. SPEAKER 8: It s going to be hard to keep him safe if Herod finds out a new king has been born. Licensed for copies and performance to original purchaser only.
