May 25 2014 A WHOPPING 80% Every year at this time a rather interesting survey is published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The survey is conducted by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) and is all about this year s newly ordained priests. There was a time in the not too distant past when ordinands tended to be older, but now the reverse seems to be true. The average age this year of a newly-ordained priest is 32. As you know, during the past year we at St. Aidan s have been blessed by the presence of Deacon Joseph Scolaro from St. Joseph s Seminary in Yonkers. He ranks as one of the youngest newly ordained in this country this year. He will be ordained on June 14 th and will turn 26 the next day. A fascinating question for me was when the seminarian began thinking about being a priest. CARA tells us that these new priests began to think about priesthood at the age of 17. That means they are probably juniors or seniors in high school. I have been told by at least one religious sister that boys begin to think about being priests when they are in fifth or sixth grade. It is no secret that the sisters were extraordinary encouragers of priestly vocations. I must admit, and it may be a personal prejudice, but I think that kids begin thinking about being priests at a much earlier age than 17. There is something that draws them to the altar and the Mass. While all the statistics were informative, the one that leaped out at me was this: A whopping 80% of this year s priests were altar servers! That comes as a confirmation of something I have always thought: the seeds of a vocation begin in the sanctuary. As a priest you can tell that some kids serve Mass with a particular piety and care that is exceptional. I recall when I was at St. Aloysius in Great Neck there was a young boy who served Mass with great faith and devotion. I always thought he would be a priest and eventually he became Father Thomas Curry of the Benedictine Fathers. It helped that he came from a very devout family. Father Kevin Dillon has and does a wonderful job moderating the altar servers here. He takes special interest in all of the girls and boys who offer to serve Holy Mass. He has training sessions, bowling parties and a special breakfast at the end of the year for the senior servers and their families. This past Sunday he hosted the annual breakfast in the rectory dining room. It was a simple and festive gathering and I could tell when I dropped by that everyone was having a great time. Serving at the altar is a great way for our young people to learn about the Mass and the life of the Church. The

young men and women who are part of this program will have a wonderful memory of the Catholic Church and their parish. It is hoped that this will attach them to Christ and His Church for the rest of their lives. They will always recall that they served God when they were young and perhaps some of them will become priests sisters or brothers. I hope so! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. ASCENSION THURSDAY This Thursday, May 29th, is Ascension Thursday a Holy Day of Obligation. The Mass schedule is as follows: Wednesday, May 28th 5:30 and 7:30 PM Thursday, May 29th 6:30, 9:00 AM, 12:15, 5:30, 6:30 (LATIN MASS) and 7:30 PM RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT FUND This is what the Lord asks of you, only this The weekend of May 31st/June 1st is the annual collection for the Religious Retirement Fund. Religious Sisters and Brothers who have been involved in education, health care and social ministry in the Diocese of Rockville Centre need our help. The stipends being earned by young members of Religious Communities are no longer enough to support the needs of the elderly members of their Communities. The number of elderly Religious in assisted living or nursing facilities continues to rise and health care costs are rising too. For this reason, the Diocese of Rockville Centre, for the past twenty-nine years, has committed to return to our Religious Communities a portion of our gifts of treasure, in appreciation for the many years of service to the people of our Diocese of these dedicated servants of Our Lord. Please come prepared next week to assist the elderly Religious with a once-a-year gift, as generous as your means will allow. These gifts will be distributed among the twenty-nine communities who serve our Diocese. Your gift may be placed in the mail or dropped in the collection basket on the weekend of May 31st/ June 1st. Brochures describing this appeal are available in the church or you may have received one at home. On behalf of the Religious who serve in our parishes and hospitals, we thank you for your generosity. EAGLE SCOUT COLLECTION Life Scout, Martin Conway, will be collecting for his Eagle Scout Project after all Masses on May 24th and 25th. His Eagle Scout Project is power washing, painting walls, planting plants and putting mulch around the plants at the Little Sisters of the Poor in Queens Village.

The disabled veterans manufacturing the poppies are paid for their work and the donations received for the poppies are all used to assist various veterans charities and programs. Members of the Catholic War Veterans Post 1949 will have poppies available after Masses on Memorial Day Weekend of May 24 th & 25 th.
