THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD FIRST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY Newness of Life January 11 & 12, 2014 AS WE GATHER In the Gospels of the Epiphany season we find Jesus revealing Himself to the disciples. As He is baptized by John, the voice from heaven declares Him to be God s servant Son, echoing the prophecy from Isaiah. He was obedient not only in taking all sin on Himself in His Baptism, but most importantly in His death and resurrection. His victory becomes ours through Baptism. As a result, we are able to continue unveiling His Epiphany ( revealing Jesus to all ) as we walk in newness of life as servants of the Living God. WELCOME Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. (Deuteronomy 30:19b-20) FELLOWSHIP GREETING + PREPARATION + OPENING HYMN #400 Brightest and Best of the Stars of the Morning Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid; Star of the East, the horizon adorning, Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. Cold on His cradle the dew-drops are shining; Low lies His head with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore Him in slumber reclining, Maker and Monarch and Savior of all. Shall we not yield Him, in costly devotion, Fragrance of Edom and off rings divine, Gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean, Myrrh from the forest and gold from the mine? Vainly we offer each ample oblation, Vainly with gifts would His favor secure. Richer by far is the heart s adoration; Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor. 1 Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid; Star of the East, the horizon adorning, Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Pastor: Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? People: We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION Pastor: We must confess that none of us walks in newness of life each day; however, since our Lord took our sins on Himself, our sins have been washed away in the water of Baptism. The promises the Father made to Him are ours. He said, I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you. Let us therefore confess our sins, confident that Christ s righteousness will be graciously credited to us. Heavenly Father, People: although, as Isaiah prophesied, our Lord would not break a bruised reed or quench a faintly burning wick, but would faithfully bring forth justice we confess that we have walked in the ways of this world. We have sought power and prestige for ourselves, but have neglected those less fortunate than ourselves; we have rejoiced in our freedom, but have forgotten those in prison; we have basked in your gracious forgiveness, but have failed to extend it to the people we meet. Forgive us, renew us, and assure us again that through the water of Baptism Jesus righteousness is now our own. Pastor: In the water of His Baptism our Lord fulfilled all righteousness. The Father s approval, with Him I am well pleased, is spoken over all who have been baptized in His name. God proclaimed through Isaiah, Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare. Therefore as a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. 2

May the Lord give strength to His people! May the Lord bless His people with peace! HYMN OF PRAISE #601 All Who Believe and Are Baptized All who believe and are baptized Shall see the Lord s salvation; Baptized into the death of Christ, They are a new creation. Through Christ s redemption they shall stand Among the glorious heav nly band Of every tribe and nation. With one accord, O God, we pray: Grant us Your Holy Spirit. Help us in our infirmity Through Jesus blood and merit. Grant us to grow in grace each day That by this sacrament we may Eternal life inherit. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. Father in heaven, at the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River you proclaimed Him your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. People: Make all who are baptized in His name faithful in their calling as your children and inheritors with Him of everlasting life; Pastor: through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. + WORD + OLD TESTAMENT Isaiah 42:1 9 (The Lord speaks about His Servant and addresses Him.) Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice; he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his law the islands will put their hope. This is what God the Lord says he who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols. See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you. 3 5:00 ANTHEM Good News Children s Choir EPISTLE Romans 6:1 11 (Our Baptism unites us both to Christ s death and also to His resurrection.) What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 3:13 17 (Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan.) Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. CHILDREN S MESSAGE SERMON HYMN #781 We Give Thee But Thine Own We give Thee but Thine own Whate er the gift may be; All that we have is Thine alone, A trust, O Lord, from Thee. May we Thy bounties thus As stewards true receive And gladly, as Thou blesses us, To Thee our first-fruits give! Oh, hearts are bruised and dead, And homes are bare and cold, And lambs for whom the Shepherd bled Are straying from the fold. To comfort and to bless, To find a balm for woe, To tend the lone and fatherless Is angels work below. The captive to release, To God the lost to bring, To teach the way of life and peace, It is a Christ-like thing. And we believe Thy Word, Though dim our faith may be: Whate er for Thine we do, O Lord, We do it unto Thee. 4

SERMON "The Servant and His Servants" Isaiah 42:1-9 OFFERTORY Make Me a Servant sing twice AGPS #174 Make me a servant, humble and meek, Lord, let me lift up those who are weak. And may the pray r of my heart always be: Make me a servant, make me a servant, make me a servant today. LUTHER S EXPLANATION THE FIRST ARTICLE OF THE APOSTLES CREED People: I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true. OFFERING As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. If you are a visitor, please leave your address and phone. After you are finished, please pass the book along to others in your pew, and return the book to the center aisle. PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH After each petition: Pastor: let us pray to the Lord: People: Lord, have mercy. At the conclusion of the prayers: Pastor:... one God, now and forever.
