(Closed Sundays) SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase Sunday best has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it s a healthy sign that we re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

First 22nd Sunday of in Advent Ordinary - December Time September 3, 2017 2, 2018 Saluti! (that s Italian for Cheers ) -- because when you read this I will be in Italy with 34 other parishioners. While you are at Mass here at Holy Spirit this weekend, I will be presiding at Mass in Florence at Santa Maria dei Fiori, (Saint Mary of the Flowers) which is the cathedral of Florence, also called the Duomo (Italian for Dome ). Here s a photo of this famous landmark: Good News! We have a Gift Shop owner: she is Teresa Griffen, who is one of our vocalists at the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Teresa has a great background to take over this position, including having been the manager of the Gift Shop at Desert Springs Hospital for six years. Please contact Teresa at her email: tmgriffen4@gmail.com. More information will be coming from Teresa in the weeks ahead as she will need volunteers, suggestions, ideas, input etc. We had over 120 names suggested for the Gift Shop! We will be evaluating all the different nominations; several names came up many times. So, the winner will be announced in next week s bulletin! Keep us in your prayers that we have a safe and memorable trip. Again, be assured of my prayers at all the Masses I say at some of the most beautiful churches in the world. Hmmmm! I m not sure we can top the beauty of Holy Spirit, however! Ciao! Page 4

First 23rd Sunday in of Ordinary Advent - December Time September 3, 2017 9, 2018 Unconditional love. Unparalleled hospitality. Unprecedented relationships. To say that these qualities encapsulated the 2018 Holy Spirit Missionaries Trip to Jamaica is tonot only speak the truth, but it is also to present a forthright understatement. As a first-time participant of a Mustard Seed Communities mission trip, I can genuinely declare that this journey provided me with experiences, encounters and perspectives that I will undoubtedly nurture and call upon throughout the rest of my life. Although the trip, in all its entirety, established itself as a monument of infinite ardor in my heart, it did include key events, landmarks that embody the love and people that made the mission so special. In my personal ventures, there was a particular little girl with whom I instantly bonded. Her name was Shaniel, and it was in her eyes and through her voice that I encountered a force that can only be described as miraculous. Here was a young girl, no older than twelve, who was admitted to a Mustard Seed Community for an affliction that she had no control over; and yet, there was more hope and more joy in that glowing face of hers than I have ever witnessed in all of my days. Shaniel reminded me of what all of us are on this earth to do. Shaniel reminded me that we are all put on this earth to make it a better place a better place for ourselves, for each other, and for generations to come. My eyes were truly opened to the wondrous individuals and communities that lay beyond the borders of both my comfort zone and my hoe and I urge, with all my heart, everyone to seek the revelations that accompany carrying out the Lord s good work. Michael Bonifazio Have you been wondering what ministry you could participate in at Holy Spirit? We have a Social Committee that plans different functions for the Church. We hold meetings once a month or every other month. If you re interested in joining to be a part of the fun, please reach out to Kristal Urso k.castillourso@icloud.com Our next meeting will be September and we will go over our events already planned. Hope to see you in our group! Upcoming Social Events: Adults Only Cocktail Night date still to be decided Trunk or Treat 10/20 Christmas Ornament Painting 12/1 Holy Spirit Missionaries with some of the residents. Page 5

September 7 th and 8 th at the South Point Hotel and Casino! Register at www.lasvegasdiocesanconference.org My Sisters and Brothers in Christ, The Diocese of Las Vegas annual second collection for Seminary and Clergy Education and Development takes place on the weekend of September 15 and 16. This collection supplements the ongoing education of our priests and the cost of medical care if they were to become ill, disabled or develop special needs. This collection also helps offset the cost of tuition, housing and the education of our seminarians. Our Diocese is blessed to have priests who give so generously of their lives to the service of the Church and its people. They celebrate Mass on Sundays and during the week, hear confessions, anoint the sick, baptize, celebrate marriages, and pray for the dead. Our priests preach the Word of God from the pulpit and teach it in classroom settings. They also listen to their people s joys and sorrows and promote works of charity. We are also very blessed to have five men studying for the priesthood at Mount Angel Seminary in Saint Benedict, Oregon; one man at University of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois; and one man at Pope Saint John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts. Your continued support of this collection conveys your appreciation of our priests and seminarians. I ask that you keep them in your prayers. Assuring you of my prayers, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, +George Leo Thomas Bishop of Las Vegas Page 9
