Welcome to Trinity Lutheran Church 1010 Sill St, La Crosse, WI Sunday, September 16, 2018 8:30 am ~ Polka Service ~ Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost *Please stand if able Love God, Love Our Neighbors, Serve the World Prelude Welcome *Confession & Forgiveness (All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.) Blessed be the holy Trinity, the one who fashions us, the one who heals us, the one who reforms us again and again. Amen. Let us confess our sin, calling for God's transforming power. (Silence for reflection and self-examination.)

Source of all life, we confess that we have not allowed your grace to set us free. We fear that we are not good enough. We hear your word of love freely given to us, yet we expect others to earn it. We turn the church inward, rather than moving it outward. Forgive us. Stir us. Reform us to be a church powered by love, willing to speak for what is right, act for what is just, and seek the healing of your whole creation. Amen. God hears our cry and sends the Spirit to change us and to empower our lives in the world. Our sins are forgiven, God s love is unconditional, and we are raised up as God s people who will always be made new, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. *Gathering Hymn It s Time to Praise Tune: Pennsylvania Polka Lift up your voices the worship begins, It s time to praise our Savior. Death is defeated, our sins are forgiv n. It s time to praise our Savior. Thanksgiving, confession, we come as we are; we find a gracious welcome. Everybody sing together and lift your voices to praise our Savior.

*Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Kyrie Tune: Edelweiss Kyrie. Kyrie. Lord, have mercy upon us. Song of Praise Sing Alleluia! Tune: Beer Barrel Polka 1. Sing Alleluia! Come let us worship the Lord. Sing Alleluia! Come lift your voice to the Lord! Join hearts together, worship and glorify God. Celebrate God s love together and sing Alleluia! 2. Worship the Father, for all His gifts from above. Worship the Savior, who gave His life out of love. Worship the Spirit, comfort and peace through it all. Let us worship God together and sing Alleluia! *Prayer of the Day Let us pray. O God, through suffering and rejection you bring forth our salvation, and by the glory of the cross you transform our lives. Grant that for the sake of the gospel we may turn from the lure of evil, take up our cross, and follow your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. (Please be seated.)

First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-9a The image of the servant of the Lord is one of the notable motifs in the book of Isaiah. Today s reading describes the mission of the servant, whom early Christians associated with Jesus. Like Jesus, the servant does not strike back at his detractors but trusts in God s steadfast love. 4 The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. 5 The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. 6 I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. 7 The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8 he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. 9a It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty? The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

*Gospel Lesson: Mark 8:27-38 The Holy Gospel according to Mark, the 8th Chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 27 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, Who do people say that I am? 28 And they answered him, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets. 29 He asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, You are the Messiah. 30 And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. 31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. 34 He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. 36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? 37 Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? 38 Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. (Please be seated.) Sermon Pastor Roger Grow

*Hymn of the Day Psalm 27 Tune: Too Fat Polka 1. You re my light and my salvation, I won t be afraid, for you have been my aid, by you all things were made. Foes attack me, hassle me, but I will never fade. Strength from God fills my need. I won t be afraid! (Chorus) Oh, do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me. Do remember me. Do remember me. Oh do Lord, oh do Lord, oh do remember me. Promise kept, don t forget, Lord, remember me. 2. Though a host encamp against me I will never fear, when the war is here you are always near. One thing I have asked of you that I will seek for sure, in God s house let me live confident, secure. (Chorus) (Bridge) When I m walking through the valley of death s shadow I will fear no evil. 3. You will hide me in your shelter in the day of strife Underneath your tent, up upon the height. Now my head is lifted up above the stormy fight Shouts of joy I will sing to the Lord my light. (Chorus) *Apostles Creed Song Tune: Du, Du Liegst Mir im Herzen 1. Do you know God created you and all that exists? God has given and still preserves all your body and soul. God provides food and clothing, all we need day to day, And protects us in danger. We ll thank Him, serve and obey. Refrain: Yah, Yah, Yah, Yah, this is most certainly true. Yah, Yah, Yah, Yah, this is most certainly true.

2. Do you know of the Savior? True God, true man is He. At great cost he redeemed us, from sin and death set us free. Jesus paid with his precious blood, his suffering and death. We are his in his kingdom, serving him in righteousness. (Refrain) 3. Do you know of the Spirit helping us to believe? We are called through the Gospel. Spirit gifts we have received. Spirit gathers, enlightens, sanctifies the whole church, Keeping Christians united, saints both in heaven and earth. (Refrain) *Prayers of Intercession (repeat three times) Lord, listen to your children praying, Lord, send your Spirit in this place; Lord, listen to your children praying, send us love, send us pow r, send us grace. *Peace The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. (Please extend a greeting of peace to those around you.) (Please be seated.) Offering

*Offering Song No Fear Today Tune: No Beer Today Polka (Chorus) No fear today! No fear today! The Lord your God is with you! No fear to-day! No fear to-day! Wherever you may go God is with you. 1. But now thus says the Lord who created you, O child, do not fear for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name, I have told you, you are mine. Do not fear for I will be with you. (Chorus) 2. When you pass through waters deep I will hold your hand in mine, the rivers they shall not overwhelm you. When you walk through fires' heat know that you shall not be burned, the fires' flames will never consume you. (Chorus) *Words of Institution *Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. (Please be seated)

Communion Distribution All who believe that Christ is truly present in this meal and are baptized are welcome to commune today. Communion today is served by intinction which simply means to come forward to the server to receive the wafer, hold on to it, then dip it into either wine or grape juice and consume the elements. Communion Songs Holy Communion Polka Tune: In Heaven There is No Beer 1. Communion is sacred sign, Christ comes in bread and wine. We eat and drink this food, as instituted by Christ for our good. 2. Remission of sins assured, the blessing in the Word, Given and shed for you, there new life and salvation s promised, too. 3. A person is well prepared who trusts God s holy Word with simple belief that s true; And will not doubt the gift is meant for you. 4. In heaven there is much wine and feasting all the time. Communion makes us one, the foretaste of the feast that is to come. God s Love; Our Love Tune: Lilly Marlene Polka 1. God so loved the world He gave His only Son, so that ev ryone who believes may have new life. For God did not send Him to condemn the world but save it through His Son. For God so loved the world. For God so loved the world. 2. Jesus gave a new commandment for us all: "Love the Lord your God with your heart and all your soul. And love one another just as I have loved you, you should also do. Love neighbor as yourself. Love neighbor as yourself."

Blessing Holy and compassionate God, in bread and wine you give us gifts that form us to be humble and courageous. May your words come to life in our serving and in our witness, that we might speak a living voice of healing and justice to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our rock and our redeemer. Amen. Announcements *Benediction God, creator of all things, speaking reformation into being; Jesus Christ, savior of the world, raising the dead; Holy Spirit, living voice, calling and enlightening the church: Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen. *Sending Song A Mighty Fortress Polka Tune: The Happy Wanderer 1. A mighty fortress is our God, a shield victorious; He breaks the cruel oppressor s rod, salvation glorious. The old satanic foe has sworn, with craft and dreadful might, He arms himself to work us woe, no equal in the fight. (Refrain) Grace alone! Faith alone! Word alone! Alleluia, alleluia! Christ alone! God alone! Glory to God alone! 2. No strength of ours can match his might! Rejected, lost we d be. But now a champion comes to fight. You ask who this may be? Elected by our God, himself, Christ Jesus mighty Lord! He holds the field victorious, God s only Son, adored. (Refrain)

3. Though hordes of devils fill the land all threat ning to devour, we tremble not, unmoved we stand, they cannot overpow r. Let this world s evil tyrant rage, his might is doomed to fail. One little word subdues him now, God s judgment must prevail. (Refrain) 4. God s word forever shall abide, no thanks to foes who fear, For God himself fights by our side with Spirit weapons near. Our house, goods, honor, child or spouse, were they to take away, Though life be wrenched, they cannot win, the kingdom s ours to stay. (Refrain) *Dismissal Go in peace. Sound the good news. Thanks be to God. (All songs arranged by Rolf Svanoe of Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony, MN)
