NADHAL NEWSLETTER National Association of Department Historians of the American Legion Volume 48, Issue 1 December 2017 Editor Charemon Dunham Calendar of Events August 25, 2018 at 11:30 am National Historian s Dinner with NADHAL meeting to follow at National Convention at Minneapolis, MN. September 15, 2018 DEADLINE History books or certification forms must be at National Headquarters. October 15-16, 2018 at 8:00 am all contest judges and department historians report to the library for sign-in. October 15-16, 2018 at 8:30 am judging of History Books and training in Indianapolis, IN. October 16, 2018 at 10 am NADHAL meeting at the American Legion Library in Indianapolis, IN. From National Historian Richard DuBay First, I would like to say that it is an honor to be this year s National Historian, and I would like to thank NADHAL for giving me the opportunity to address their members. I would like to thank all the instructors, historians, and judges who took time from their busy schedules to attend the Historian Conference at Fall meetings. A special thank you to Past National Vice- Commander and PNH Fae Casper for her informative training session that she held for the new historians. I would also like to thank all the Past National Historians for their advice on many issues facing a National Historian, but I would especially like to thank PNH Paul Bennett for his continued help and 1 advice. Last year a judges comment sheet was implemented to help those who sent in history books to see where they might improve on what they submitted. It was noted that many items were left blank on these sheets and so we have sent out letters to this year s judges for their feedback on how we might improve them. To Howard Trace and Lynda Lydick and the rest of the library staff, a very special thank you for all that you do each and every day and all the hard work that you put in for our Historian Conference. As we approach the 100 th Anniversary of the American Legion, I hope that all of the members of NADHAL are working with the historians and members in their

Departments to write their histories. As you are all well aware, our history is our legacy that we leave for those who follow us. I would like to also wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to seeing each of you at the National Convention next year in Minneapolis. Richard T. DuBay, National Historian From NADHAL President Fae Casper The Christmas Holidays are past, and we are starting another new year. I want to take the opportunity to wish all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope all your wishes came true. This has been a history making year for The American Legion with the election of our first female National Commander. Now we are also starting the celebration of our Centennial year. There will be a great many happenings across the nation that we need to document for future generations. As members of NADHAL and historians at all levels of our organization it is important for us to document the activities that are happening and to help with functions in our own areas. Have you added your Post, District and State information to the web page at https://centennial.legion.org? It is not too late and very easy to accomplish. If you have questions, you may contact the National Library at 317-630-1200 or call one of the officers of NADHAL on the attached roster. We stand ready to assist in any way we can. Please note in October we discussed possible changes to the C&Bs. The Committee has requested your input. Please provide any suggestions to them. I also announced at the Fall Meetings the national staff will work with us on our web page to make it better. Your input is needed. Please let me know if you have any questions. My e-mail is fae0316@comcast.net. NADHAL is our organization and we are the only ones that can keep it strong. Please provide any help that you can. Fae Casper, NADHAL President NADHAL Membership NADHAL membership is from 1 Jan to 31 Dec. Dues are $5 per year. A Life Member membership is also available. Please make out your check to NADHAL and mail to Frederick Doten, 3517 Cottage Meadow Way, Laughlin, NV 89029. You must be or have been a Department Historian to be eligible to join. Membership Information from Membership Chairman Fred Dolton As we start the new fiscal year for NADHAL there is a major on-going effort to establish a current Membership Roster. The rationale for doing this is because the National Data Base contains members that are not active, members who have since passed, and recording errors. Below is a listing of what is believed to be the current membership for the fiscal year 2018. We are requesting that each member who receives this newsletter to review this listing. If errors are noted, it is requested that you contact the Treasurer, Fred Doten, with corrections. He can be reached at 702-298-3492 or by email at the following address fdoten@centurylink.net. For the Good of NADHAL The Record shows that there were no minutes from the 2017 National Convention meeting held in Reno, NV. With no further business to come before the Annual Meeting of National Association of Department Historians of The American Legion, George Boddie closed the meeting with the proper ceremony. Note from PNH W. Frazier Brinley, Acting Secretary. There were 35 names on the sign-up sheet (there should have been at least 41) for the meeting and the Christmas List, which didn t agree with my count. If you want to confuse your secretary, put your friend s names on the list! One person put their name on both sheets. $46 was received for the Christmas List. Keel, LA 2012-14 James Mariner, NM 2014-16 Fae Casper, GA 2016-17 Jennifer Salak, NE 2017 18 Fae Casper, GA In 2007 there were a number of Constitutional/Bylaw changes and updates. Many of the same ones that were proposed at our meeting. PNH Fae Casper, PNH Jim Fratolillo, PNH Charemon Dunham, Denise Rohan & others I think were on that committee. One of the changes was to add Honorary Life members with two added the first year and no more than one thereafter. The first year was Roy Mahoney and Del Barabani, then Helen Jacob, Bobbe Stuvengen, JoEllen Gazvoda, Carl Wipperman, Denise Rohan, Brett P. Reistad & Martha Arling. So, the hand out on the last corrected change 2003, is not the latest or most current. Please everyone check your records. Before the Constitution and Bylaws committee can make a recommendation, we need the most current copy of the Constitution and Bylaws. 10
