Traveler Missionary Baptist Church, Waverly, Alabama Synopsis of Sermon Preached by Rev. B. C. Datiri, Pastor THE EPISTLES OF PETER THE CHURCH AND HARD TIMES May 13, 2012 11. Prophecy of Scripture 2Peter 1:12-21 1. On this mother s Day 2012 how appropriate it is to speak on the subject of prophecy of the Scripture! One of such key prophecies was with regards to a mother, a virgin, who was to bear the savior of the world. Mothers bear children into this world and key elements in nurturing babies unto maturity despite the hard times they may have to endure and/or experience. The Church often goes through hard times and the members need nurturing to stand during such times. Peter wrote his epistles to prepare the church as to how to handle hard times caused by enemies both from within as well as those outside the church. In the first Epistle, Peter concentrated on the enemies that were outside the church whereas in the second epistle he turned his attention on the enemies of the church within who engage in false teachings, heresies, rebellion and apostasy. So he quickly reminds the Christians that no matter what hard times they are experiencing, they need to remember their unique calling to partake in the kingdom of God. He asked Christians to be very aware that God has called us to be partakers of His very divine nature. Moreover, His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Additionally, He has given us his very great and precious promises through the prophecy of the Scriptures so that through them we are participants of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world that is caused by evil desires. For this very reason, every believer must make every effort to add to his faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. These qualities in increasing measure will make you effective and productive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election so that you will never stumble but rather receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2. Thus our text for today reads, So I will always remind you of these things, even

though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things. 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. 19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (1Peter 5:1-14). 3. Mt Traveler members, as we conclude this sermon please allow me to summarize this sermon as follows: Mother s Day always reminds us of the nurturing ability of mothers; and Christians need to develop nurturing abilities to cause each other to become mature partakers of the divine nature of God and his kingdom. This is done by constantly reminding each other of the divine attributes of faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection and love. Christians must always remember that life on earth is very brief and each person s time of departure is very near and so the prophecies of the scripture must keep us alert at all times. We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet s own interpretation of things because prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. And let the church say, Amen! 4. So if you desire to be a partaker of God s divine nature and kingdom, we invite you to come, repent, and humbly accept Jesus Christ into your heart and life by faith. Then confess with your mouth your faith in Him that He died and rose again to save you from your sin through the shedding of His blood on Calvary, and you will be saved. This salvation guarantees an inheritance that is incorruptible, undefiled and which does not fade. May God bless you as you humbly come to Him while the Praise Team leads us in a song? B. C. Datiri, Pastor THE EPISTLES OF PETER THE CHURCH AND HARD TIMES May 13, 2012 12. Warnings of False Teachers in the Church and Their Destruction 2Peter 2:1-22 1. As we near the conclusion of our sermon series on The Church and Hard Times using the Epistles of Peter, the write in this second Chapter of his second epistle turned his attention on the enemies of the church within who engage in false teachings, heresies, rebellion and apostasy. He warned the Christians about the false teachers and their destructive heresies. These false teachers would swift destruction upon themselves as they deny the sovereign Lord and fail to heed warnings concerning the Day of the Lord. 2. Thus our text for the day read, But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping. 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; 6 if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless 8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard) 9 if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment. 10 This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the flesh and despise authority. Bold and arrogant, they are not afraid to heap abuse on celestial beings; 11 yet even angels; although they are stronger and more powerful, do not heap abuse on such beings when bringing judgment on them from the Lord. 12 But these people blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like animals they too will perish. 13 They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you. 14 With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed an accursed brood! 15 They have left the straightway and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer, who loved the wages of wickedness. 16 But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a

donkey an animal without speech who spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet s madness. 17 These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. 18 For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity for people are slaves to whatever has mastered them. 20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22 Of them the proverbs are true: A dog returns to its vomit and, A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud (2Peter 2:1-22). 5. Mt Traveler members, as we conclude this sermon please allow me to summarize it as follows: There are enemies of the cross and Christian faith within the Church. These enemies are the false teachers that engage and encourage heresies, rebellion and apostasy that bring hard times to the Church as these teachers with eyes full of adultery never stop sinning and seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed an accursed brood!. These false teachers with their destructive heresies and behaviors as well as their denial of the sovereign Lord will bring destruction to themselves for it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. These false prophets and heretic people have become so unrighteous that of them the following proverbs are true: A dog returns to its vomit and, A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud Christians must therefore be aware of the false teachers and scoffers that deny the sovereignty of the Lord and scorn about the day of the Lord; even as in their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. As such they are springs without water and mist driven by the storm. And let the church say, Amen! 6. So if you desire to know God and avoid being deceived in the heresies of false teachers and prophets, we invite you to come, repent, and humbly accept Jesus Christ into your heart and life by faith. 3. Mt. Traveler Missionary Baptist Church, Waverly, Alabama Synopsis of Sermon Preached by Rev. R. D. Jacobs, Evangelist THE EPISTLES OF PETER - THE CHURCH AND HARD TIMES May 27, 2012 13. The Day of the Lord 2 Peter 3:1-18 The Apostle Peter s two letters have been our focus under the theme, The Church and Hard Times. As many Christians were dispersed and sown into the Gentile non-believing world - Peter was informed that they were facing persecution and sufferings because of their faith. So Peter, as a special father, addressed the believers in Asia Minor (Modern Day, Turkey) and encouraged them to continue in the faith and reminded them of the heavenly inheritance kept for them by God. (1 Peter 1:3-5). Some have dated it to around 5 years later that word again is sent to the Apostle Peter that the Christians are again experiencing sufferings, but this time it is not from those outside of the Church but some from within it. Peter would then address his 2 nd letter to the believers there, reminding them of two things that will surely come: Scoffers and the Day of the Lord. Peter begins the 3 rd chapter by reminding them that he is writing to them to stimulate wholesome thinking by remembering the words of the prophets and the apostles of Jesus Christ. Peter then says that first of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come. (2 Peter 3:1-3) A Scoffer or Mocker could be defined as one who s lifestyle and teachings are contrary to the Way of Truth as taught by Jesus Christ. In the 2 nd Chapter of 2 nd Peter, Peter address these mockers and false teachers by stating that they will be among you, secretly introducing destructive heresies and stories that they have made up, even denying the Sovereign Lord. (2 Peter 2:1-3) Peter says that they will come promising freedom (2 Peter 2:19), a lifestyle of liberalism and freedom from obeying the Truth of the Bible and a liberty to do as they please. So the Apostle calls them Brute Beast of Instinct (2 Peter 2:12) because they act after their own evil pleasure and lust. Peter says that they will bring the way of truth into dispute. (2 Peter 2:2) Peter continues and reveals that these scoffers will secretly introduce heresies with a cover of truth, meaning they will look the part and have the titles. So, Peter compares them to springs without water and clouds without rain being driven by a storm. (2 Peter 2:17) After secretly being among them, Peter then reveals their destructive transition from secretly to openly carousing around revealing themselves unashamedly as bold and arrogant blasphemers who never stop sinning and seducing the unstable and those who have just

escaped from living in error. (2 Peter 2:10-18) Peter makes it clear that they are destroying and hindering God s body from growing. Amazingly Peter says that at one point these scoffers were genuine believers who had known the straight way of truth but had left the straight way and had wandered off. Peter says they are like a dog who returns to his vomit and a pig to the mud. (2 Peter 2:15; 22) The sad part is that the Apostle Peter says that many will follow them (2 Peter 2:21), and will be scoffing and following their own evil desires, (2 Peter 3:3) deliberately forgetting the truth of God s word. (2 Peter 3:5-7) After assuring the Believers of the 1 st thing that would surely come, the scoffers, Peter affirms the 2 nd thing that would also come- The Day of the Lord. This is the day that Jesus returns and judges all people and the earth. Although many scoffers with their words and actions will say, where is this coming or return that He promised? Peter informs the Believers that a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day unto God. And, that God is not slow in keeping the promise that He would return but he is longsuffering, giving a chance to all to repent before the Day of Salvation. (2 Peter 3:4-8) Peter says that day will come like a thief, (2 Peter 3:10) and on that day God s judgment will come as the heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be destroyed by fire and the earth and everything in it will be burned up and laid bare. Peter says that day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire and the elements will melt in the heat. (2 Peter 3:10; 12) As Peter concludes his 2 nd letter, he says that since you know that these two things will come (Scoffers and The Day of the Lord), Be on guard that you are not carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position. He also says to live godly and holy lives, making every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Christ. Peter finally encourages them to grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 3: 11-18) The basic fact for Christians is to avoid becoming and following scoffers and for non-believers to repent and enter a relationship with Jesus Christ before the Day of Salvation comes. And if you are reading this on the Internet why don t you pray asking Jesus Christ to be your Lord and savior, then write us at pastordatiri@mttraveler.org? If you are a child of God, and this message has blessed or helped you why don t you also write and tell us?
