September 16, 2018 Proclaiming Jesus Christ as Lord Page 3 The 2019 Mass Book for Intentions is open COME AND JOIN US IN CELEBRATING THE FEAST DAY OF SAN LORENZO RUIZ DE MANILA AND SAN PEDRO CALUNGSOD You may request up to 7 intentions which is 5 week day masses with 2 weekend (Saturday Vigil Mass and Sunday) We are allowed to accept only one stipended mass; Canon 13.2:945-58. The name of the person(s) for whom the stipend has been offered is written in the bulletin. There have been clerical errors in the bulletin but, no matter what is said in the bulletin, the mass is offered for the intention of the one who has given the stipend. The celebrant of the mass may or may not mention the intention. But on the day of his ordination, a priest makes a promise to say mass for the intention requested. An individual priest may mention anyone for whom he wishes to pray during the prayers of the faithful however, the principal intention of the mass is always offered for the person who has requested it at the parish of ice. This should be made clear in the prayers of the faithful if any intentions are mentioned. If there is a special request on the anniversary of an important event, that request may be made to the priest offering the mass, in the sacristy, immediately before that mass. The request should be made in writing; a monetary gift is not expected. The celebrant of the mass may agree or not agree to mention someone s name. This is his personal decision and not a parish policy. The request cannot be made through the of ice and in this case, the intention will not be published in the bulletin or the announcements previous to the mass. We cannot schedule extra masses beyond our regular daily and Sunday masses. ON SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 5:00 P.M. MASS SAINT LAMBERT CHURCH 8148 Karlov Avenue, Skokie, IL. 60076 In preparation for the feast day of San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila and San Pedro Calungsod, a daily novena will be held from September 20 to September 28, 2018 at 6:45 P.M. Your participation is most welcome!

Page 4 St. Lambert Parish 24th Sunday Ordinary Time Michelle Martin Family weekend September 5, 2018 When my husband, Teresa and I arrived in Caroline s city, ready to help her move from one apartment (summer sublet) to another (first offcampus housing), she called down the hall to her roommates, Guys, my family s here! We spent the next three days helping her pack, disassembling furniture, cleaning, hauling her furniture and boxes from one neighborhood to another (to pick up the keys for the new place) to another, to meet her new roommates and help her move in. Then we assembled furniture, took her and a friend out for dinner and brought her back to our hotel to spend one more night sleeping in air conditioning. In between, we went to the hotel pool at least a couple of times a day with Teresa, ate in lots of different kinds of restaurants, and sent pictures and requests for information to Frank, who stayed home because he had his own responsibilities. More than once, especially after carrying the second dresser up the stairs and installing new blinds (without the help of a power drill), Caroline thanked us for making the trip. More than once, when Teresa s energy flagged or she looked bored, we reminded her that we (including her brother and sister) would likely be doing the same thing for her in not so many years. Sure, it was easier when the kids were smaller, when the favors they needed were rides to school and to activities, or help with homework. When all of us slept under the same roof almost every night, and there were times that I could reach out and touch all of them without ever getting up from my chair. Now, with Caroline at school out of state, and Frank getting ready to leave in a year or so, it s more of an effort. Communications technology helps: Caroline has texted to ask how to make the foods she liked best growing up, and we can send photos, share information and talk without worrying about the cost. But we still like to see them, and this was the last realistic opportunity for at least most of us to see Caroline until Thanksgiving, although one of us will likely visit sometime around family weekend in October. The fact is, we ve spent enough time in her city recently to have opinions on the different Target stores and to have favorite restaurants there. Soon, when Frank goes to college, we ll likely be exploring another city. In Matthew s Gospel, Jesus points out that no parent would give their child a stone when they ask for bread, or a snake when they asked for fish. God the Father also gives good gifts to his children, he says. Because that s what family does. To both of them, we said, that s what you do for your family. If someone needs help, and you can give it, you do. If they are reluctant to ask, you offer. And you buy them lunch and dinner while you re at it.

September 16, 2018 Proclaiming Jesus Christ as Lord Page 5 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In this country, we don t name our churches The Fourth Avenue Catholic Church, but rather seek a patron saint or mystery of faith. We inherit this tradition from an old Roman custom via medieval England. Interestingly, that has not been the practice elsewhere, and parishes abroad often do carry just the name of the neighborhood. In Ireland, the Roman (English) practices didn t take hold, and so churches are known simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi in Dublin is often called Adam and Eve after a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interesting carving of our first parents, so they become patrons by default. Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European pattern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a different name. Thus, we might hear of a parish of Midvalley City comprised of Saint Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. Therefore, when parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old, but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twentieth-century saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel, and Mother Teresa.
