We rejoced and we remnsced; we prayed and we studed; we created and we magned; and, of course, we ate! And the beat goes on Frst, I want publcly to thank Lsa Drucker and Judy Kemp who so ably chared our Centennal celebraton commttee. They helped conceve our year of celebraton and then they recruted and guded dozens and dozens of our members who took on some responsblty to contrbute to our collectve effort to make ths year truly specal. Thank you, Lsa and Judy!! And the beat goes on We probably should have been able to predct that 9 months of celebraton would be nsuffcent to encompass all that we seek to do to celebrate our 1st century and catapult us nto our 2nd century. So, I am pleased to tell you that much of what we began durng ths Centennal year wll carry over nto the comng years n ways that wll contnue to nspre and redound to the beneft of our members and beyond. And the beat goes on Ths Centennal year we launched the mult-year mplementaton of our congregaton s strategy to guarantee TBI s long term fnancal sustanablty. On Rosh Hashana we announced our campagn to rase a Fund for the Future a one-mllon-dollar endowment whose earnngs wll help to put our congregaton on sound fnancal footng and allow us to grow and expand the reach of our cultural and educatonal programmng. We are more than two thrds of the way towards our goal and we now seek to nclude every member of the congregaton. Every gft, no matter what amount, s deeply valued and greatly apprecated. And the beat goes on Our Ad Hoc commttee on Long Term Fnancal Sustanablty also created sub-commttees to look nto our revenue stream and possble dues restructurng as well as a comprehensve program around legacy bequests. You wll doubtless hear more about those n our 101st and 102nd years and beyond. And the beat goes on Our celebratons commttee had no shortage of creatve deas, just a shortage of tme. So, n the comng year our celebratons wll contnue: wth creatve art and musc; wth a return to Albany Park and our former buldng; wth more sharng of our stores; wth more personal reflectons at Shabbat servces; and perhaps most mportant, wth an attempt to broaden our reach. On June 22, our Shabbat at the Park wll be Alumn Shabbat. I am appealng to each of you n TBI to spread the word to anyone wth whom you are n contact who has ever been a part of the TBI famly. We want to reconnect wth them and nclude them n our Centennal. Whether n person or va socal meda, we hope to reach out to the wdest possble cohort of folks, who no doubt carry fond memores of ther tme at TBI, and allow them to share n our kvellng about our past and n our dreams for our future. The very specal nature of our communty s greatly enhanced when we open our doors and our arms wde and share t. And the beat goes on I am very excted to announce the Sprng 2019 TBI Journey to Israel. Tentatvely scheduled for May 12-22, 2019, the journey wll allow us to see the land and meet the people. Specfc nformaton wll be avalable soon, but I encourage you to save the dates and start packng. Please be n touch wth me to ndcate your nterest and/or wth any questons. Contnued on page 2 June July 2018 Svan Tamuz Av 5778 Volume 101 Number 8

We would also lke to thank Blly Belkov, Jans Fne, Dors Smon, and Rabb Wenberg who made donatons n honor of ther May brthdays. Ths marks the end of the frst year of my term as Presdent of TBI. It has been an eventful year. Whle we have spent much of the year celebratng our 100th Brthday as a communty, for me personally, I have been engaged n a completely new way. When I was asked to take on ths role, I was reluctant. I am not generally comfortable as the center of attenton and I expected there would be many aspects of the poston that I mght fnd dffcult. Standng up as a leader s somethng I generally do wth sgnfcant reluctance. But I accepted the opportunty. Sayng yes s one of the hardest thngs to do n lfe. It s much easer to stay home or focus on one s day job than to engage wth the communty. And wth smartphones and socal meda, t s especally easy not to nteract wth our frends and famly, much less the broader world. Some of you may recall over a decade ago when I spoke durng Yom Kppur about volunteerng as a soccer coach. At the tme, I had barely ever played soccer. I was ll-equpped to teach a game for whch I dd not even understand the rules. Nevertheless, the league needed coaches, my chldren wanted to play, and I could learn enough to do the job (I hoped). I was a soccer coach for the next 10 years. I stll can t really play, but the experence was postve for me and, I thnk, for the players. Volunteerng s rewardng. I learned a lot. I learned a lttle about soccer, but I learned more about teams, about leadershp, about workng together, and about chldren. Sayng yes to becomng a soccer coach led me down a rewardng path of volunteerng, meetng new people, learnng and growng as a person. Smlarly sayng yes when TBI asked me to step up has also been rewardng, allowng me to meet new people, to get to know others better, and to grow as a person. As Presdent of TBI, I want to encourage each of you to step up when asked. Obvously, I hope you wll say yes when you are asked to jon a commttee, to run a program, or to become a Trustee, but we all have our own strengths, our own nterests, and just as I stepped up to coach soccer, you may also choose to step up somewhere n the communty, whether at TBI or elsewhere. The tme you spend volunteerng s more than just gvng back to the communty. It s a gft to yourself. It provdes a sense of purpose, mproved mental health, better connectons wth people, whch can buld self-confdence and mprove job sklls, along wth psychologcal well-beng. Whle not every experence wll do all these thngs, I encourage you to say yes when you are asked to step up and to devote some of your tme to helpng others n some manner. When researchers at the London School of Economcs conductng a study n Socal Scence and Medcne examned the relatonshp between volunteerng and measures of happness n a large group of Amercan adults, they found the more people volunteered, the happer they were. Temple Beth Israel has a group for those who enjoy wrtng as a hobby. It s a frendly, easly accessed group that dscusses many topcs mportant to wrters. We meet monthly. The next meetng wll be at TBI on Monday, June 18 from 2:30 to 4:00 pm. For more nformaton contact Rchard Rotberg at Yoahv@aol.com. FroM ThE drector of congregatonal learnng At ths season t s my custom to reflect on the year that was and say thank you. Ths beng our centennal year has only deepened my apprecaton and lengthened the lst of those I wsh to thank. Frst, to the centennal chars, Lsa Drucker and Judy Kemp who steered the centennal shp wth such grace and confdence. They were a pleasure to work wth and I am apprecatve of ther leadershp and confdence. Our openng salvo to the centennal was the dggng of a genzah and subsequent bural of hundreds of copes of Gates of Repentance along wth a damaged Torah and other holy books. Specal thanks to Bruce Crane and hs team for dggng the hole and assstng n managng the project. It was a memorable event for our communty. The second floor got a serous artstc upgrade ths year n large part thanks to the talented Becky McFall who brought a unque vson to the starwell brngng the centennal to lfe wth the bottle project and generally enhancng the look as you enter the school. We are very grateful that Becky s a part of TBI and shares so generously wth us. Our engagement wth the Herzl School took on greater sgnfcance ths year and I am grateful to Lauren Ltchfeld and Wendy Snger for generously helpng us provde gfts for each chld enrolled at Herzl. Your organzaton and specal commtment are apprecated. The 100th brthday party brought over 400 people nto the buldng to celebrate the communty n a joyous manner. There s nothng I can say beyond wow and I m very grateful to all who made t so. Shabbat lunch and learns presented by Mchael Lorge and Mark Samberg brought a sense of hstory to the adults who engaged n learnng about our rabbs and the mpact they had on the communty and on TBI. Thank you to both of you for gvng us so much to thnk about. Where would a school be wthout teachers? Where would I be wthout my amazng faculty? Our school s extraordnary and our faculty s central n makng t all happen. I am grateful to each of them for ther selfless devoton to the chldren of TBI and to our communty. The YES commttee contnues to be deeply nvolved n the work of the schools provdng gudance, nput, and hands whenever I need them. I am partcularly grateful to Becky Reuhs as the char and to Jessca and Adam Esenberg who have worked so hard to engage parents whenever possble. I also want to acknowledge Laura Fnkel, TBI s VP of Educaton for her steady and calm gudance, her wllngness to do almost anythng, and above all of ths, for beng my dearest frend. After movng nto a dfferent role n the congregaton, Anne Kaplan stll fnds the tme to serve the school and our needs and does t wth a smle and wth her amazng effcency. Kathy Rabn re-joned our school team ths year staffng the offce on Sundays wth cheer and good nstncts. I am grateful to you both for all that you do. Summer s ahead and there s much work to do, but as you can see, I am never alone n ths work. That s the blessng of workng n a place lke TBI and I don t forget t for a mnute. Have a wonderful summer! B shalom, Lor B. Sagarn Chef Lor s vst to the Nosh Café on Aprl 22 was a bg ht. It s amazng the number of hats she wears around the Temple! out wth ThE old By Barbara Seaver Bulletn Edtor Emertus A lttle over eleven years ago, when I sad yes to Rabb Wenberg s job offer, I had no dea that I would hold that job longer than I held my job wth the Chcago Board of Educaton. (Yes, I was a teacher. Rase your hand f you knew me as Mss Seaver, your Hebrew, French, Englsh, or Homeroom teacher.) Janet Jablon was ready to pass along the baton after nearly 18 years as Bulletn Edtor. Janet was both a tough act to follow and a wonderful mentor for the frst few months of my tenure. Thank you, Janet. I have enjoyed readng and edtng the artcles that appear n the bulletn 10 tmes a year. I have delghted n beng among the frst to know about new and surprse events. I ve apprecated sharng the joy and the sadness that accompanes the congregatonal thank you notes that so many of you wrte followng a lfe cycle event for whch you have receved support and comfort from TBI members. And I have adored the thanks I ve receved from many of you who have recognzed my efforts. As Jon Schneder sad n hs artcle ths month, volunteerng s a gft to yourself. It provdes a sense of purpose, mproved mental health, better connectons wth people Ths volunteer job has done all ths and more for me. Thank you for the opportunty. And now t s tme to pass the baton along to Amber Wood. As a full-tme employee of Temple Beth Israel, Amber s closer to the gongs on and the daly actvty that we often want to hear about n the bulletn. And Amber won t be tryng to complete the bulletn between flghts to Sngapore and Boston. I m lookng forward to new volunteer opportuntes. Thank you to all who were so supportve of my efforts durng the past 11 years. I ll see you around the Temple! and n wth ThE new By Amber Wood, Drector of Operatons The thought of thankng and laudng an edtor n wrtng s a dauntng task, one whch I hope I am up to. Over the course of the last year, our communty has shared our stores, weavng together words to create a shared memory when we celebrated together, cred together, and worshped together as a communty. However, one rarely spends tme thnkng about the way n whch we weave those stores together. That beng sad, there are people who thnk about how to craft a story and how to ensure that each word chosen s a chosen word. For over a decade Barbara Seaver has panstakngly worked to produce a beautful bulletn that s both pleasng to the eye and of nterest for the mnd, endeavorng to ensure that what s submtted by an author s what s meant by that author. She has offered her keen eye and sense of vsual desgn. Now I am honored to have the opportunty to follow n her footsteps. As ths bulletn marks the end of Barbara s term as edtor, I wll become the bulletn edtor. I thank Barbara for both her long servce and for the future assstance and advce she has offered as I move forward to take on ths honor. In her honor, I remnd you that the 10th of July s the deadlne for submsson of your August bulletn artcles. To many more well-crafted bulletns and stores shared, l cham!

cha notes FroM ThE MuSc drector At a recent Oneg Shabbat, I had a conversaton wth a congregant who was very complmentary about Koleynu. Ths had been her frst experence hearng our chor on Shabbat and she told me how much she enjoyed t and how t had enhanced servces for her. I was pleased to hear her feedback but was also concerned that her famly, who had been members for many years, had not known about our chor. As Drector of Musc, my lfe s mmersed n all thngs musc, and I must remember that our congregaton s dfferent thngs to dfferent people. For varous groups our congregaton s a place to worshp, a place to learn and grow, a place to socalze and enjoy the company of frends, and/or a communty workng for socal justce. For the members of Koleynu, our Adult Chor, Temple Beth Israel s all of these thngs. The men and women of Koleynu st on the Temple Board, are members of the Ssterhood and Brotherhood, volunteer n our schools and n the Mtzvah Corp, serve on the Socal Acton Councl, and take every opportunty to learn n Adult Educaton. They are commtted to the lfe of the synagogue and sngng n Koleynu s another opportunty to serve the greater good. The secret s that whle members of Koleynu donate ther tme and energy to makng musc that enhances prayer, they receve so much more than they gve. Beng a part of an ensemble lke Koleynu s to be part of a famly, where you are gven uncondtonal love and acceptance for who you are. It s to feel the exhlaraton of learnng a dffcult pece of musc and performng t n an exceptonal way. It s encouragng one another to ther very best and beng supportve no matter the outcome. It s sngng n glorous harmony, feelng the ebb and flow of the phrases, and knowng that each voce s a unque and mportant part of the whole. Our famly s always growng and we would love to nclude you. Koleynu rehearses on Thursday evenngs durng the school year from 7:00-8:30 pm, and Hgh Holy Day Chor rehearsals begn on Thursday, August 9th. SSTErhood news As I complete my second year as Co-Presdent of Ssterhood, I want to take ths opportunty to express my apprecaton to all the women of Ssterhood TBI. When asked to help out at any event, I never heard the word No. That word s just not part of our vocabulary. You were always wllng to step up. I feel very fortunate to have served my second year durng Ssterhood s Centennal, whch also happened to be Temple s 100th year. It was an exctng tme to be so nvolved. We partnered wth Temple on many events to celebrate ths momentous occason. So much has occurred. I look back at our many programs and events such as our successful Cooke Walk/Bake Sales, our wonderful Artsan Fares, our heartwarmng Nursng Home Luncheons, and our movng and emotonal Pnk Shabbat to name a few. I also can t forget our T Fllot Nashm servces, our Bngo Nghts, our many Socal Acton programs, our Open Program meetngs, and our fun Mahj drop-ns. It has been an honor and a prvlege to have worked wth so many amazng and dedcated people durng the past two years. Our events would not have been possble wthout the hard work of our Vce Presdents and Charpeople who planned our actvtes, our wonderful volunteers who helped wherever needed, and everyone who partcpated. We couldn t do t wthout you. I am grateful to have served my term wth two ncredble women. Frst wth Jane Page from whom I learned so much and wth Joanne Merrtt who I hope has beneftted from my mentorshp. Not only have I loved servng wth them, I have made two very close frends as a bonus. How quckly two years have passed. As I wnd down, I reflect back to the tme I was asked to be Co-Presdent. I was very hestant to take on the poston, but I am very happy that I dd. It has been a very rewardng two years. I have learned a great deal about myself and have defntely stepped out of my comfort zone.
