With complete confidence in your faithful care, we commend to your prayers the mission of this Shrine dedicated to you and the spiritual and material needs of those who come as pilgrims seeking your assistance. Help all people discover and fulfill their vocation in life, defend the dignity of every person, and bring healing and hope to those who are suffering. May the dying come safely to their heavenly home embraced, as you were, by Mary and Jesus. Amen. Introductory Letter February, 2018 Father Dennis Berry S.T., Director, Shrine of St. Joseph. My Dear Family and Friends of the Shrine of St. Joseph, I was first introduced to the Life of St Joseph mosaic, created by Austrian artist Leopold Forstner, by our beloved, recently deceased Brother Martin Pacholek S.T.. He personally transported it to the Shrine and for thirty years meticulously cared for the large, two ton artwork, which has recently been formally given as a gift to the Shrine of St. Joseph by the Holy Name Province of the Franciscans. The Mosaic Mystery When I first saw the mosaic, I was overwhelmed by a feeling of joy as I experienced the outstanding beauty and sacredness of this exceptional artwork. However, I was also somewhat saddened to think that these same feelings were not openly being shared with others who would equally be moved by viewing its unique artistic and awesome qualities. I began to reflect on why the mosaic was such a meaningful experience for me. The answer was at first relatively simple. The medium used, a combination of enamels and colorful mosaic glass, was fabricated by and assembled by Forstner who specialized in this specific method of production in the early 20th century. Leopold used the genius of his creative expression to illustrate four noteworthy biblical scenes intimately involved with the life of St. Joseph, a Saint of great significance to both this Shrine, and to the world. And yet I continued to feel the mosaic had something more to reveal. The Meaning Revealed An examination of the mosaic reveals the central figure of Joseph as earthly father, holding the Christ Child, surrounded by four familial illustrations: 1. Joseph s espousal to Mary; 2. the birth of Jesus; 3. Jesus in the Temple; 4. the death of Joseph. These depictions as a whole represent the love, respect and devotion Joseph shared with Mary and Jesus as wife and child, and the love they shared together as the Holy Family in their worship of God. Upon careful reflection, I recognized that these four scenes individually correspond to the four Pillars that are the dedicated services foundation of the Shrine of St. Joseph: 1. Spiritual and Apostolic Formation; 2. Peace and Human Rights; 3. Worship; 4. Recovery, Health and Healing. This brochure will more fully explore and explain these significant connections. The mosaic may be seen as simply a beautiful piece of artwork, which it unquestionably is. When considered in detail, it represents so much more. Now more than ever, -4-

in this demanding and challenging time we live, the sacred existence and thoughtful message of the mosaic needs to be widely seen and experienced. The mosaic offers an opportunity for all to see and appreciate an admirable model of life s deepest meaning and message through Joseph s commitment to his faith, fatherhood, family, and the love of God. The Guidance of Angels St. Joseph is an admirable example of a faith-filled and obedient servant of God. During the most critical times in the life of the Holy Family, he was supported and guided by angels sent from God. The significance of angels in the life of St. Joseph cannot be overstated. A classical reference to angelic guidance occurred when, in a dream, the Angel Gabriel appears to Joseph and said, Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins (Matt. 1:20-21). The Shrine, in concert with Families of Faith, is enlisting the assistance of families, individuals and organizations, by establishing the Shrine of St. Joseph Society of Angels to help recognize the noteworthy example of St. Joseph and to advance the Shrine s dedicated service Pillars. The Vision Shared with the World Your guidance and support is being sought, through the Society of Angels, in the building of a dedicated Pilgrim Chapel, for a much deserved recognition of our Shrine s patron Saint Joseph, where the Life of St. Joseph mosaic will be appropriately displayed for all to see. Our hope-filled prayer is to extensively communicate the beauty and meaning of all we have to offer within the Shrine of St. Joseph. Please join with us in this worthwhile endeavor in the development of this sacred vision for all to share throughout the world. God bless you all for your support of the Shrine of St. Joseph. The 21 st Century Shrine Mosaic illustration of the espousal of Joseph and Mary. St. Joseph had to learn to discern God s will in a dramatic fashion. Spiritual and Apostolic Formation consists precisely in this: learning to discern God s will amidst circumstances and events of life, accepting risks and consequences of following the divine call, and acting in justice and love no matter what the cost. Father Dennis, Reflections on the Mosaic : Spiritual and Apostolic Formation The coming centennial celebration of the Shrine of St. Joseph in 2024 presents crucial questions regarding the purpose and mission of the Shrine for the next one hundred years. The recent works of Pope Francis, the Shrine of St. Joseph Advisory Council and wide consultation with Shrine volunteers and community members combined, will serve as the foundation to guide the Shrine into the 21st century. From its beginnings in 1924, Father Thomas Judge, founder of the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity, who minister there, saw the Shrine as a haven, a place of prayer, rest and reflection for those seeking solace, guidance and renewed strength on their journey. Father Judge s message almost one hundred years ago is not too different from the message recently delivered by Pope Francis in April 2017 through his Apostolic Letter entitled, Sanctuarium in Ecclesia: Shrines are called to play a role in the new evangelization of society today. The Church is called to evaluate in pastoral terms the motions of the heart that are expressed through pilgrimages to Shrines and places of devotion. The Pope went on to call for the establishment of international Shrines and the promotion of an organic pastoral ministry of Shrines as powerhouses of the new evangelization. With the approval and encouragement of our Bishop Arthur Serratelli of the Diocese of Paterson, the Shrine is in dialogue with the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization to become part of this international network of shrines in service to this sacred mission of bringing the Good News of Jesus to the world. -8-

The mission of the Peace and Human Rights Pillar, in the spirit of Joseph and Mary, is to break down the wall of hostility dividing us, (Ephesians 2:14) and create spaces of hospitality, dialogue and understanding. Here, people of every race, language religion and way of life are welcome, especially the poorest and most vulnerable, as honored guests, sisters and brothers. Father Dennis, Reflections on the Mosaic : Peace and Human Rights Pillar The thoughts of both Pope Francis and Father Thomas Judge, stress the importance of shrines in the future of the Church. How does the Shrine of St. Joseph as a community become part of this renewed focus? Our strategy centers on the Shrine community coming together to promote Families of Faith Mosaic illustration, birth of Jesus Christ with Joseph and Mary. a movement entitled Families of Faith. Its mission will be to revitalize and emphasize both faith and family through an enhanced devotion and understanding of St. Joseph as the model and guide for all fathers, families and faithful into the 21st century. For the Church, a shrine has a dual mandate as both a place of worship and a mission center for the community. Families of Faith encompasses both these dimensions. Families represent the all-embracing community dimension of a shrine. Like Joseph, who with his beloved Mary and their young Jesus quietly lived a family life together for over thirty years, everyone emerges from a family. Faith its central role in human life, its support and preservation, is the very heart of a shrine s purpose. It is a consecrated place of encounter with God. Here faith is renewed, hope restored, and love deepened. Through prayer, pilgrimage and worship the Shrine of St. Joseph will provide an indispensable opportunity for evangelization in our time. Shrines epitomize and link both these divine purposes-a sacred encounter and the response in loving service. For it is only those who have experienced and know God s love who can share it with others. Families of Faith will be created to energize and promote the sacred importance of both family life and community in the fabric of the Church and specifically the role of the father according to the example and prayer of St. Joseph. Families of Faith will focus on promoting family life while assisting in educating and informing the community, and leading the effort to help realize this vision. -9-

Pilgrim Chapel Mosaic illustration of Jesus held by St. Simeon in Temple. Joseph and Mary lived lives of quiet fidelity to the God whom they had come to love and serve with all their mind, heart, soul and strength (Luke 10:27). They joyfully shared this same path and praise, love, and worship with their young Son Jesus. The Worship Pillar shares in this mission of St. Joseph today. For peoples of all cultures, languages and ways of life, the Shrine provides a place to come and seek ever more deeply an encounter with the living God. Daily Eucharist and opportunities of sacramental reconciliation as well as special experiences of prayer and devotion, individual and communal, throughout the year create a milieu of peace, prayer and worship. Here, all God s People are welcome to encounter the One in whom we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28). Father Dennis, Reflections on the Mosaic : Worship Pillar The front cover of this brochure displays a photograph of the Life of St. Joseph mosaic by the renowned artist Leopold Forstner, (1878-1936). He originally designed and created it (1925-1927) as the altarpiece of the main altar in the St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, New York. When the Seminary closed in 1972, the Franciscan Friars of the Holy Name Province moved it to the Little Sisters of the Poor in Totowa, NJ. Brother Martin Pacholek, S.T., personally transferred it from the convent and brought it to the Shrine more than three decades ago. Since then he personally assured its care and preservation while constantly looking for a way to properly display this magnificent art piece as a unifying symbol for devotion to St. Joseph on the Shrine s lovely grounds. Over the past year, a dedicated team of volunteers, including community members and professionals, have been planning to make Brother Martin s dream a reality. We are excited to announce, in concert with the recently proclaimed Year of St. Joseph 2018, that a fundraising campaign is being initiated for the purpose of constructing the Shrine of St. Joseph Pilgrim Chapel. This sacred chapel, a long awaited recognition in honor of the Shrine s patron saint, will house the Life of St. Joseph mosaic as its central theme. The Pilgrim Chapel will serve as a holy place of prayer, pilgrimage and peace for the thousands of people who visit the Shrine annually. Through prayer, pilgrimage and worship the Shrine of St. Joseph will provide an indispensable opportunity for evangelization in our time. -10-

The Recovery, Health and Healing Pillar honors this time in the life of St. Joseph by accompanying sisters and brothers in their times of need for healing, newness of life and, eventually, support and comfort for the final journey home. Father Dennis, Reflections on the Mosaic : Recovery, Health & Healing Pillar In Honor of St. Joseph Our prayer is that the Shrine of St. Joseph s coming centennial revitalization movement will help reinforce the importance of shrines in the Catholic community in line with Pope Francis recent directive. It also will serve as a medium to enhance the devotional knowledge and Mosaic illustration of Joseph on deathbed attended by Jesus and Mary. love of St. Joseph as we move further into the new millennium. This humble carpenter of Nazareth by the faith filled humility and goodness of his life made it possible for all to come to know the teachings and mission of his foster child, Jesus Christ. The message of St. Joseph is an essential one. Revitalizing that idea for today could not be timelier in light of the challenges that the Church, families and society presently face. The Shrine of St. Joseph is committed to strengthening this undertaking for all fathers, families and the faithful as we look forward to sharing in this mission for the next one hundred years. In all this, we honor St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus, the husband of Mary, the patron of the universal Church. He is our model, our intercessor, and our guide. Like us, Joseph lived in a turbulent time of social, political and economic transition. Yet he simply and humbly went about his daily life seeking to be faithful to God and to the mission confided to his care. In the providence of his daily life, he protected, strengthened and defended the Holy Family so that Jesus, in the company of his mother, might grow in wisdom, grace and age before God and all. This care allowed salvation and joy to come to the world in Christ. The Shrine of St. Joseph Mission Plan 2016-2020- In Honor of St. Joseph -11-
