Deeper Roots (Ephesians 4:17-24) Discipleship 101 Total Renewal of the Heart & Mind une 4 1783, village near Paris first untethered hot air balloon -6000ft. landed destroyed by pitch-forked peasants who stated it was an instrument of evil since man was never meant to fly Are we guilty of trying to become something we weren t meant to be? Or just the opposite? Are we guilty of neglecting what we were created to be?????? Either way Change comes hard for us humans: - Change in this life comes hard (Diets, habits, breaking addictions, picking which shoes to wear) Context: Eph. Chs. 1-3 (Our Position in Christ) = What Jesus has accomplished for us: (Chosen, Adopted, Saved, Sealed, United, Called us into ONE family, One Purpose, One Calling) Chs. 4 (Our Calling in Christ) = We are called to pray, serve, & CHANGE = GROW =become more like Jesus daily HOW? Through following Christ. Followers are called Disciples. Discipleship is basically the process of becoming more like Jesus and letting more of yourself, your past, your sin & brokenness fall away. ** We get so caught up with trying to repair our past we forget that God has actually called us to focus on building our future. READ Ephesians 4:17-24: So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you are to walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in he futility of their mind, 18 being darkened in their understanding, [m] excluded from the life of God because of he ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; 19 and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality [n] for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. 20 But you did not learn [o] Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in esus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old [p] self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on he new [q] self, which [r] in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. Discipleship 101 learning to how to become more like Christ. To be changed. To be transformed by God s Spirit nto a NEW CREATION. =NOT BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION!!!! This comes from a HEART change, which leads to MIND change, which leads o a WILL change = different beliefs & different action = LIFE CHANGE =NOT mere duty-driven Christianity (because you have to, you are supposed to) RULES, REGULATIONS, RITUALS But, because God changes your heart, changes your desire to do what you love to do because what you love to do s what you ought to do. THIS IS A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHRISTIANITY = (NOT PERFORMANCE DRIVEN) = HEART DRIVEN! Let s break this passage down: Paul declares: So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, [= This is Jesus command as much as it is Paul s] hat you are to walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, Walk = our daily Christian life, our spiritual journey our followship, our discipleship, our conformity to Him. Vs.18: being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in hem, because of the hardness of their heart; Paul is referring to the Lost, the gentiles those apart from Christ being darkened in their understanding, = The Natural man, the lost man does not have God s Spirit & does not reason, think, or even comprehend the matters of the Spirit, the matters of God: But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 1 Cor. 2:14 WHY? because of the hardness of their heart; Man in his natural state has rejected God; Rebels against God; hates God. Why Because man wants to be his own GOD. Romans 1: For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth [l] in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident [m] within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible

attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not [n] honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and [o] crawling creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for [p] a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed [q] forever. Amen. Romans 1:18-25 So, because man s heart is hardened against God, his mind is darkened in understanding... Which leads to being excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them Vs. 19: and they, having become callous, have given themselves over [=given up to be led fully by their sinful heart and darkened, ignorant mind] to sensuality [n] for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. Vs. 20: But you did not learn [o] Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, ust as truth is in Jesus, Vs. 22: that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old [p] self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, f you are a Christian, why do you keep sinning? If you are a New Creation, why do you still struggle with your old sinful habits, hang-ups, hurts, brokenness, and addictions? want to talk about THREE different types of People: 1) The Lost Person: Physically Alive. BUT Spiritually Dead (Depraved, Corrupted, Sinful) Remember Ephesians 2: And you [a] were dead [b] in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the [c] course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, [d] indulging the desires of the flesh and of the [e] mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. As Humans, we are comprised of THREE PARTs (Trichotomy): Body, Mind, & Soul Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thess. 5:23 Body (Physical Body. It will die. It will be resurrected to eternal life OR eternal death) Soul (Capacity within every human to contain God s Holy Spirit. The Immaterial part of our being & which we ake on the Image of God: Holy, Gracious, Loving, Just, Truthful, Merciful) MIND: HEART = the interior part of our lives which controls us n Biblical Language, the heart is connected with the Mind and thinking: As a person thinks in his heart, so s he (Prov. 23:7). To ponder something in one s heart means to consider it carefully (Luke 1:66; 2:19). To set one s heart on is the literal Hebrew meaning that infers to give attention to something, to worry about it, to hink it through (1 Sam. 9:20). To call to heart something means to remember something in the mind (Isa. 46:8). n the Bible, Heart and Mind are synonymous for the center of man s (Thinking, Feeling, Doing) n the MIND: -Intellect The center of our understanding, comprehension, logic, reason, motivation -Emotion The center of our feelings, our moods -WILL The Center of our action. What we think & what we feel control what we DO: **Skiing, attempting the 720 two full rotations - Where your head turns, so your body will follow:

For everyone, SIN touches every part of the Heart of Man, what we call the Mind of man the seat of our understanding, emotion, and will. Sin not only touches it, sin corrupts every part of man making him depraved. (complete moral corruption). "For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries. Mark 7:21 Man s heart is deceitful and desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9). The Bible teaches us that man is born dead in transgression and sin (Ps 51:5, 58:3; Eph. 2:1-5) The Bible teaches that because unregenerate man is dead in transgressions (Ephesians 2:5), he is held captive by a love for sin (John 3:19; John 8:34) so that he will not seek God (Ro. 3:10-11) because he loves the darkness (John 3:19) and does not understand the things of God (1 Co. 2:14). Therefore, men suppress the truth of God in unrighteousness (Romans 1:18) and continue to willfully live in sin. Because they are totally depraved, this sinful lifestyle seems right to men (Proverbs 14:12) so they reject he gospel of Christ as foolishness (1 Corinthians 1:18) and their mind is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is unable to do so (Romans 8:7). There is NO part of man that is not adversely affected by sin. How we think, how we feel, and what we do (based on our free will) is ALL affected by sin!! So, the natural man the lost person is Physically Alive, but Spiritually dead. Man s flesh or his heart is ruled by sin. Man s Free will is bent toward sin & rebellion against God. 2) The Saved person, the one who has been born-again in Christ as Savior he is Physically Alive & Spiritually Alive. In Christ, he is Declared Righteous. He is Made Holy by the presence & indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Why? Because we have UNION with Christ. We become one with HIM. That is us! This is what Christ accomplished on the cross for us. 2 Cor. 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. n Christ, we become NEW creations, NEW Creatures (= New Spirit, God s Spirit)... BUT we keep our OLD bodies, bodies Still scarred with the affects of the flesh & carnality. So, though we have a new Spirit within us, on this earth, we will begin the process of sanctification (or being made more like Christ, being made holy, more in God s image). The PROCESS is to DAILY The Paradox of Already, but Not Yet. We are declared Righteous, and God s Spirit helps us to become more righteous but we are NOT perfectly righteous YET! There is still a daily struggle. The NEW Spirit vs. OLD FLESH (the old self). WAR! esus declares in Matthew 26:41 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. The Spirit and Flesh are at war in our body! War Illust. Johnny Cash once said of himself: Sometimes I am two people. Johnny is the nice one everyone loves. Cash is the one who causes all the trouble. Mostly, they fight one another. Paul says in Romans 7: For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like o do, but I am doing the very thing I hate... 17 So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For the good that I want to do, I don t do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 21 I find hen the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. I see a different law in the members [n] [p] of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my [q] members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? [r]

So the saved person is Physically Alive, Spiritually Alive, but on this earth still plagued with the old body, the old flesh which wages war against the New Spirit. And though we are Saved & certain of our eternity with Christ, we are to spend the rest of our life on this earth waging war, and winning the war against our natural fleshly desires. So, what is the key to spiritual victory, the key to overcoming the continual destructive patterns of sin and corruption? Vs. 23: that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, - What does that even mean? Paul says: A. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed [metamorphasized] by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2 Caterpillars are meant to fly. But they can t until they are transformed by God s plan Tadpoles are meant to leap. But they can t until they are transformed by God s plan into frogs. Humans are meant to To be renewed in the MIND is to be BORN AGAIN in our mental & moral capacity To allow GOD to fill us up with HIS Presence (To fill our mind with His Truth): n stark CONTRAST to the lost person s DEPRAVED MIND and Actions bent on sin and rebellion toward God, BUT That our Intellect would be filled with the knowledge of God s Nature & Work (The truth of Scripture) That our Emotion would be led by the stability of God s very Spirit living & leading IN us That our WILL would be conquered by God s Will allowing our very own FREE WILL to willingly be subjected to God s perfect and sovereign will in every area of our lives. B. put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him. Col. 3:10 C. Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. 2 Cor. 4:16 To BE RENEWED IN the spirit of our MIND... = allowing yourself to be led minute by minute in God s Spirit as you INVEST time in God s Presence, THROUGH God s Word, Prayer, and the radical leadership of the Holy Spirit. **Tapping/ BRAIN 4 weeks more cells, got bigger. When we read scripture, we engage in a spiritual apping Our brains are rewired in alignment with God s Word & we develop the mind of Christ. We begin to think His thoughts & act like He wants us to. Two DOGS (Gentle and meek, or rowdy & ferocious...which dog gets the food more often, demands it?) What are you feeding? The habits & pattern which repel God in your life? OR The habits and patterns which invite God s LORDSHIP of your life? We cannot stand before and be confused why we are not growing, not happy, not encouraged, not fulfilled, not eeling close to God... when we consistently FEED that which repels God s Spirit in our lives (TIME. How do we spend our time daily??) We all have the same amount of time. We all are busy. We all have high expectations and those who are demanding much of us. YET... some of us are growing spiritually, some of us have been stagnant for quite a while. And some of us have backslidden way far away from God. Vs. 24: and put on the new [q] self, which [r] in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of he truth. 3) The third person is the Resurrected Person: Spiritually Alive. But Physically Dead on this earth. They have been taken to heaven. And NOW, they are Fully Sanctified (perfectly holy). They are Glorified (Perfectly righteous). They become sinless in their pursuit to serve Jesus for eternity. Even though they still have their MIND: Their Intellect, Emotion, and FREE WILL. They have no more sin! They are perfected.

APPLICATION: 1. Reprogram our mind: NEW INPUT = Different Output (Computer program coded to perform simple calculations; recode = recognize & respond to stimuli (Getting space shuttle lifted & dropped to earth to flying he shuttle all together -autopilot) Foreign language (Chinese) We are not wired to begin speaking foreign languages. We speak the language of our parents, our community. But how can an average American begin to speak Chinese. Because that person immerses himself in the anguage and culture and reprioritizes his priorities, his time, resources, responsibilities, his investments. We can t be shocked when someone becomes articulate in a new undertaking when they have devoted their ime and energy and passion into it. 2. Prioritize our Investments where we spend our time is where we will reap our legacy. Work? Shopping? Sports? Ministry (people?) 3. Appraise our situation learn to know the value of something. = **Antiques Roadshow (hidden value) Earthly value VS. Heavenly value ndia Doctor When she was a medical student, top of her class, unusally gifted, powerful with people born leader. she elt the call of God to spend her life in a distant land, serving at Duncan Hospital in Raxaul, on the India-Nepal border, in conditions most Americans would find extremely difficult to endure. Here is what I recall most from hat visit. Dr. Bell showed us the tiny apartment that was really more like a cubicle where she lived. She dressed like the Indian women around her, and she ate Indian food just like they did. Each morning she used an electric coil to heat the water for her shower. Over the years she treated thousands and thousands of patients, most of them living in what can only be described as abject poverty, the vast majority of them Hindus. Beyond all question, she was amazingly gifted both as a medical doctor and as a gifted leader. The people in and out of the hospital revered her. I do not doubt that some people wonder why she would throw away a promising career in Canada (her homeland) to work in an understaffed and under-equipped hospital n a place like Raxaul, India. Why give up a comfortable life in North America for life on the mission ield? In the end, the answer was simple and clear. Dr. Bell appraised the work of God s Kingdom in India as being of greater value than staying in North America. Her appraisal of God s call and those people s needs meant that nothing was more important han obedience, sacrifice, & calling not money, not comfort, not fame. She didn t despise the money she might have made; she simply understood that God was calling and she had to go. Obeying God was of more value (and ultimately more satisfying) than staying close to home. Let me close with the reminder that we have the mind of Christ and yet Philippians 2:5 says, Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus. We are to have what we already have, which is not a contradiction, but rather a call to continuing transformation so that we will little by little move from the caterpillars we are to the butterflies God wants us to be. It will not happen by accident. It does not happen overnight. It cannot happen without the Holy Spirit. It happens when we make a personal commitment. It happens with the godly encouragement of other Christians. It happens as we become what God made us to be. It happens as we behold the glory of Jesus Christ. This is how the mind is renewed by steadfastly gazing at the glories of Christ for what they really are (John Piper).
