2018, J.S. Paluch Company, Inc. September 16, 2018 Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Just as Isaiah prophesies the suffering of Jesus in rather specific terms I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting Jesus, in speaking to his disciples, clearly reveals to them that he will suffer and die, which bewilders and shocks them. The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly. They don t know what to do with this information, and they can t envision their beloved Lord suffering and dying in this way. YOU ARE THE CHRIST Jesus asks the disciples who the people say he is. Some say, John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets. This odd answer shows that the disciples were beginning to form a rudimentary understanding that it was possible to rise from the dead. So it is puzzling that when Jesus says that he will rise after three days, they would seemingly not quite comprehend this. But when Jesus asks, Who do you say that I am? Peter speaks for the disciples: You are the Christ. Moments later, the rather confused Peter objects to the Jesus assertion that he will suffer and die. Jesus stunningly rebukes him for his objection, Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do. Although Peter is beginning to form true faith in his declaration of belief in Christ, he still is thinking like a human, and has not yet begun to see the world through God s eyes. Peter s faith has not yet grown to its full stature, as it will after the Resurrection. Our gift of faith sees and believes the suffering and death of Christ, but we still might not see the consequences of that faith. Our works arise out of our belief in and love for the Lord. Through our faith, we must not only believe, but help others as Christ would do. This is seeing the world through God s eyes. SAN LORENZO RUIZ NOVENA It is our parish tradition to celebrate the Feast Day of the first Filipino Saint, San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila. We invite the entire parish to be part of this celebration. The Novena Masses have daily prayers for special intentions but the entire Novena will be dedicated in prayer for the well being of our Catholic Heritage - the goodness of the Church, for victims of abuse and an indwelling of the Holy Spirit through the intercession of San Lorenzo. NOVENA with mass Thur Sept 20-7:30 pm Fri Sept 21-7:30 p.m Sat Sept 22 9 am, Sun Sept 23 noon 7 :30 pm Mon, Sept 24, Tues Sept 25 7: 30 pm Wed. Sept 26 Thurs Sept 27 Fri Sept 28 7: 00 pm. The Vigil Celebration on the 28 th will be followed by a DINNER/DANCE in the Church Hall after a 7:00 p.m. Mass. Tickets for the Dinner/Dance are $ 30 adult & $ 15-12 & under. Call the rectory for tickets and lets make this an entire parish event. SAME OLD SAME OLD We have been making repeated requests for additions to our Ministry teams Thankfully, we have several new volunteers - we have postponed their training in the hopes of enlisting MORE ministers which we really need! Please think about your place in your parish outside your personal pew and offer yourself for a year s ministry. Lectors, high-school aged and above Extraordinary Minister of Communion, 18 & above Choir, high-school aged and above We want to have our training by the end of the month. Please enroll at the rectory. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION/R.C.I.A. Classes have resumed: 9 am Spanish 10 am English SCHOLARSHIPS We welcome the donation of scholarships for Religious Education students. Please contact the rectory. We thank three donors for the seven scholarships received. LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him? ~ James 2:5 What is more important being rich in faith or rich in possessions? Society teaches us that possessions are most important. God teaches a different lesson. When we are rich in faith, we keep God first in all things and realize that material things really don t matter and that it s more important to share with those who have less. September 2: $ 3,264 $ 2,510 from 84 envelopes! $ 1,490 from 20 Parish Giving $ 476 St Joseph Sunday School A rise from the past two weeks and we are most grateful! Actually we had an increase in mass attendance at all of our masses and that is refreshing! Schools have re-opened for the 2018/19 year and we pray it shall be a good experience for all of our students, families, faculties and staff. We are blest with two schools - both of the parish - our week day grammar school which has openings in many of our classes; - our Sunday School which is really two parts - Spanish @ 9 and English @ 10. Education is part of the key to success in life and that is both secular and religious: the knowledge of God and the ways of Faith enhance the life of anyone and really helps to develop the total person. We believe we have a great program in both our schools and we encourage our parents to enroll their children in one of our schools. www.stjosephjc.com. Onetime use is permitted. On days when you can t get here, your vital support can. 50/50 RAFFLE Our annual raffle books are in the mail; if you receive more than one, we apologize: if you could sell it - we would surely benefit; or you can return it to the rectory. With the loss of the Festival revenue, we hope to improve the raffle and that can only happen if all of our members join the effort. We always depended on the Festival $$$ to plug our budget and meet some of our obligations. Extra books are always available.
