A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC Dear Parishioners and Visitors: This Sunday is World Marriage Day where, as a Church nationally, we pray for all married couples. On Thursday, February 14th is Valentine s Day, a special day for all people who are in love or falling in love. For married couples, Valentine s day is celebration of their married life with joy. The symbol of love and fidelity is expressed in the exchange of rings on your wedding day: Take this ring as a Sign of my Love and Fidelity. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. These words capture the heart and soul of married life: love and fidelity. Every couple longs for this dream to come true: that the spouse they married is the right one; their love continues to grow through the years, and that their marriage will last a lifetime and their commitment to each other remains strong. Coincidently, this Sunday is also the celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year, or in Vietnam, it s commonly known as its shortened name Tet. Like many Vietnamese families, my family still observe and celebrate the rich customs and traditions that have been passed on from many generations. My family is now passing these same traditions to my nieces and nephews. One of the traditions we still practice, and one that is very important in my family, is the observance of the first three days of the New Year. The celebration on the first day is for the members of immediate family -- where children and grandchildren must return home to give respect and honor to their parents or grandparents. The second day is for extended families such as uncles and aunts. The third day is for friends and acquaintances. Prosperity, Health, and Happiness are the three common greetings that we wish for one another. This is followed by the giving of red envelopes with new dollar bills inside. In my family, my siblings would give the red envelope to my parents, and in return my parents would give the red envelopes to my siblings and each of the grandchildren. The giving of gifts to the elders, several days before the New Year, is very important. Examples of these gifts are tea, banh trung or rice cake, and sweet fruits or candies. This is one of the traditions that we observe as a family. Since my parents are the oldest living elders, all my cousins would visit my parents house to bring these gifts; my siblings would go to my aunt s house and offer her these gifts. In the Chinese calendar, this is the Year of the Snake. According to ancient Chinese wisdom, characteristics of people born under this sign are known to be thoughtful and wise in character; they are clever and men of few words from their birth; are also very insightful and naturally intuitive; if anyone has a sixth sense, it's those born in the Snake year... And maybe that's why people born in the Snake year love to appreciate beauty. (http://www.hanban.com/chinese-culture/chinese-zodiac/the-2013-yearsnake.html) I wish you all a wonderful Lunar New Year with great joy and love; strong in faith and steadfast commitment and dedication to your family. And to all our married couples, may Jesus renew in you --your faith and commitment. May the Holy Spirit give you the strength to keep your promises forever and to be true to one another just as you promised your spouse on your wedding day: in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health all the days of your life. I share and agree with St. Paul when he writes: Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (1 Cor. 13: 7). Love in marriage will never end, when the sign of love and fidelity continue to be respected and honored. To promote the continued growth of marriage and family relationships in our parish and community, I invite you to join our 9-day Novena of masses that is offered to all our married couples. The 9-day novena starts today, February 10th through Feb. 18th. Novena envelopes are still in the pews. This is a perfect gift for all family members to give to their loved ones. WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH GOD S SUMMONS STATIONS OF THE CROSS Confronted with God's power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. "Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips," he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus' instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man." Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, "Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?" Isaiah answered, "Here I am, send me." We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won't lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God's messenger? Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Readings (5th Sunday Ordinary): Is 6:1 2a, 3 8; Ps 138:1 5, 7 8; 1 Cor 15:1 11 [3 8, 11]; Lk 5:1 11 Serve the poor Be diligent in serving the poor. Love the poor, honor them as you would Christ himself. ~ St. Louise de Marillac Treasures From Our Tradition Many Catholics who are not active in the Church will still seek out ashes this Wednesday. Likewise, many Jews who are not otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great exactness, fasting and refraining from work and entertainment. People customarily dress in white as a symbol of purity and a reminder of God's promise that our sins will be made white as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for Christians may be a festive Mardi Gras celebration, for Jews it is the New Year feast of Rosh Hashanah. Ten days before the Day of Atonement to God, people are expected to repair breaks in human life. These are days for offering forgiveness and seeking to repair harmed relationships with family, friends, or coworkers. Everyone is expected to seek out someone and "clear the air" by asking for understanding for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year. Perhaps the ashes you receive will be invested with deeper meaning if you follow a similar plan. This year, Rosh Hashanah will be September 5, and Yom Kippur September 14. A conversation with some Jewish friends or neighbors about their experience of a season of repentance may be a blessing on your Lent. James Field, J. S. Paluch Co. Starting Friday, Feb. 22nd, 6:30 PM A PRAYER FOR HEALING God, we pray for healing. We pray for deep comfort. We pray that you will restore what has been stolen and broken. While you do not alter history, you reveal your love in the present and the future. What seems hopelessly shattered, in you can be redeemed. For the many millions who have been defiled in sexual abuse, show yourself to be loving and able as you are willing to give back life, and life abundant. Yes, there is great pain in this world. There is injustice. There is evil. We turn to you and cry out for help and healing. We cannot help but wonder why such horrible abuse happens. But we turn from why? and ask instead, how? How now will your perfect goodness and love find expression in the shadow of wickedness? God, you are good and loving and also all powerful. Yet you have risked giving humans the right to choose how we will live. Some choose evil. For those who are victims of other s vile deeds, we ask you for grace and healing. For those who have suffered, come to them tenderly and with overwhelming and powerful love. We join Jesus and borrow his words, Be freed from your suffering.. God, Heal the victims of sexual abuse, in Jesus name. TOGETHER IN MISSION The Season of Lent Together In Mission 2013 LOVE NEVER FAILS ~ 1 Corinthians 13:8 FOR LENT FOR LIFE WHAT YOU GIVE UP FOR LENT CHANGES LIVES. A Time for Reflection This week, you are asked to read and reflect upon the Together in Mission materials that you have received a week ago. Together in Mission provides substantial financial support to 35 parishes and 52 schools in our Archdiocese. These parishes and schools provide education, ministry and a Catholic presence for tens of thousands of our sisters and brothers. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how your pledge can help so many people. But, it does. To see how, please review the materials and read the statements of those whose parishes and schools receive support. The theme of the campaign is Love never fails. 1Cor 13:8 Together in Mission provides an opportunity to show our concern for those served by the parishes and schools that need your financial support. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. Also, we will conduct our annual Together in Mission in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend and the following weekend. As always, what you give should be given in gratitude and thanksgiving for what God has given to you. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. 2013 Cathedral Chapel Goal $28,412.20 You re invited to participate in CRS Rice Bowl Our parish will be participating in CRS Rice Bowl, Catholic Relief Services Lenten program as a way to encounter Jesus through others, especially though the most vulnerable in our world.
