ETIQUETTE TIP OF THE WEEK: Lipstick/Chapstick - If you wear lipstick, Chap Stick, or lip-gloss to church, blot your lips well before venerating an icon or kissing the cross. These can leave permanent marks on our beloved icons, not to mention smears that are unsightly and difficult to remove. Another solution would be not to wear these at all when coming to church. TITHE ONLINE WITH CREDIT CARD at the bottom of the home page of our church website (www.sainthermanwasilla.org) there is now an option to pay your tithe via credit card. You can set it up to recur every month automatically, so forgetting to tithe should not be a problem. GOOD WORKS BASKET September Project: Fr. In the Orthodox Church, reception of the Holy Eucharist is reserved for baptized, chrismated Orthodox Christians who have prepared by prayer, fasting and a recent confession. We pray for all to be united in the Body and Blood of Christ! If you would like to learn how you can enter into communion with the Orthodox Church, please speak with our clergy.
THE EPISTLE V (For the Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost) Thou, O Lord, wilt keep and preserve us. Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed. The Reading from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. (1:21-2:4) Brethren, it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; He has put his seal upon us and given us His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. But I call God to witness against me it was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. For I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you. THE GOSPEL (For the Fourteenth Sunday of Matthew) The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (22:2-14) The Lord spoke this parable: The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast. But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find. And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to look at the THE GOSPEL (CONTINUED) guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen. SAINTS & FEASTS OF THE DAY Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost & Fourteenth Sunday of Matthew; Martyr Mamas and His Family; John the er, patriarch of Constantinople A GOOD WORD So, read the Fathers, even one or two lines a day. They are very strengthening vitamins for the soul. -- St. Paisios of Mt. Athos "Give your children a solid spiritual foundation, and they will be content with whatever they have. Deprive them of a life in Christ, and they will be miserable even in the midst of great wealth." -- His Eminence, Metropolitan JOSEPH None of us have been asked to be born. It is a gift, the gift of life, and we shall be judged on what each of us does with this gift. -- His Eminence, Metropolitan JOSEPH Reading the Bible without living the Bible will lead us nowhere. -- His Eminence, Metropolitan JOSEPH Without a foundation of Christian virtues, all the education in the world is meaningless. Education cannot cure loneliness, anxiety, depression and fear. Only faith in God s mercy can. -- His Eminence, Metropolitan JOSEPH Our Lord teaches us that all things come from Him. He is the source of all good. If we follow Him, even in times of sorrow and hardship, He increases us by allowing us to participate in His divinity. -- His Eminence, Metropolitan JOSEPH If we are to become filled with a joy that the world cannot take away, we must give up everything, even our own selfish lives, so that we can be alive in our Lord, Jesus Christ. -- His Eminence, Metropolitan JOSEPH
